Help! Hearing problems following infection.

Hi,
I'm 36-year old male and about 3-weeks ago I went to my doctor with typical flu-like symptoms. He informed me I had a Respiratory Tract Infection and prescribed some antibiotics and pain killers which I took over the course of the following week. The problem did not clear-up and, after developing a chesty cough and severe pain in one ear, I returned to the doctor who then told me the infection had most likely spread to my chest and most certainly in to my ears - particularly my left one. He prescribed stronger antibiotics and pain killers and a nasal steroid spray, all of which again I took religiously over the following week once again.
Although my cough and general flu symptoms have pretty much cleared up, for the past week or so I have been left with almost complete loss of hearing in my left ear. It feels as if there's still a wee bit of pressure both in and around the ear itself with a sort of numbness when i touch the skin on my face and head around the ear. This extends in to my hair-line, over my left cheek and a short distance down my neck below my ear. There's also a small amount of ringing from within the ear and it sounds as if I'm hearing things "internally" all the time. Hard to explain but extremely frustrating and my concern is that the infection has somehow managed to damage my hearing permanently.
Can anyone offer any advice please?
Thanks in advance!!
Gavin

First off, I am not a doctor or medical professional. I do know when this happened to me more than a year ago, that I didn't like the answers I initially got. Each one of us are different individuals, and while some symptoms may appear on the surface to be the same, It may just be what we are looking at and not really what else is going on.
I remember one night I went to bed, in the middle of the night I woke up sweating and had pressure in one ear. Hearing was deadened, but I just rolled over and went back to sleep. The next morning, when I woke, I could hear nothing. 90+ % of my hearing was gone, I had pressure in both the ears and an aching in one. I went to urgent care (because my primary doctor couldn't see me on short notice) and was given a diagnosis of ear infections in both ears. I was given a 7 day supply of antibiotics. 7 days later still the same, went back to urgent care and another 7 day supply given. I eventually got to my Primary care doctor and he advised me that I had wax build up and still had an ear infections. They did a flush of the ear canal and more antibiotics. After going back to my doctor, I was told that I would just have to live with this outcome for the rest of my life. I requested an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat Specialist) . He did a flush of the ear canals again and started me on a battery of 6 alergy shots 1 per week (Believe it was some sort of steroid) . He recommended that I take some OTC Cold / Sinus Medication daily and continue to see him on a weekly basis, which I did. 2 months later, I got back 80% of the hearing that I lost, and while he advised me that this may happen again in the future, Things have been good since that time. My only recommendation to you is to get to a doctor as soon as possible to make sure it is nothing more serious. If your doctor tells you there is nothing he/she can do for you. Get to a ENT for help. They are a bit more skilled at this issue than a general doctor. Hope this helps.

HI kerry- so sorry for you too. It's aweful isn't it. I really hopes it goes as quickly as it can. I am now in 4th week with no hearing in both ears. It's a nightmare and I shake with being scared permanently. Finished 2nd lot of clarithmoycin and no change. Doctors said they will operate in 3 months if I still have it. But how can anyone wait that long? Conjunctivitis too. It's a nightmare. 😪😪Keep in touch

O no 1 ear is bad enough let alone 2 ears. I'm into my 3rd week now finished both lots of antibiotics and still no change such a horrible feeling I fly in 3 weeks time and i am dreading getting on that plane. Just want it to go away. Your ears seem to take ages to get better. I have to see my GP In 2 weeks time he won't send me to see ENT yet said I have to be more patient
Hope you see some improvement yourself it's not nice

Hi kerry. I have just finished my 5th week not hearing in both ears and it's been a nightmare. But the last couple of days I have had some small improvement to one ear and have started to hear some distant speaking. I put this down to something I started taking a couple of days ago and got me it's a miracle. Mucolyxir. It's intersting how it works. I also have had to cancel flights and was told not for at least 6 months. I saw ENT and they said be patient too! Hope yours starts to clear up very quickly

That's good to hear any improvement is better than none apparently the ears can take a long time to heal. I went back again on Monday and doc said I have left over fluid and inflammation still in the ear drum and again still to give it more time. I fly in just under 3 weeks but doctors have told me I'm OK to fly. Just hope I am cuz once I'm on that plane there is no getting off. Luckily it's just a 2 hr flight.
What is this Mucolyxir never herd of that hopefully what ever it is it carries on giving you results you want and hopefully an end to this horrible ear infection x

Well that's brilliant you can fly! And also a short flight. I wonder how long this takes to get rid of! No doc has said to me ears take time! Why do ears take so long! Never want this again! Have a google of mucolyxir it's got a lot written about it, quite scientific. Really hope yours goes really quickly and you can enjoy wherever it is you are going! Xxxx

Hi Jill, I notice your posts were a while ago now but I just wonder how your hearing is now? I have muffled and lessened hearing in one ear from an ear infection 5 weeks ago. I am deaf in my other ear from birth so it's really worrying. My GP told me to be patient but I went to an ENT privately as so desperate only to be told the same. I'm so frightened that this is it forever. I can barely have a conversion with my little ones and work is exhausting. Please tell me your hearing came back!!!!

Hi Samantha. I am sorry to say that all is not good but it is better in one ear. It’s nearly a year now. I had to give up my job. After being taken to different ENT every sat and Sunday around london it was hopeless. Paid privately and hopeless. Still treating my ears everyday. In fact just started trying colloidal silver. All doctors told me to learn sign language. Can’t fly. Not being able to properly talk to my daughters who don’t live in uk the worst. Now going to acupunture as I need to fly in the summer 18 months after that is. Acupunture takes away some pain and wish I could afford to go every day. Sorry I can’t say anything more positive. Living nightmare.

Oh you poor lady! I'm so sorry to hear this. People just don't understand how much a hearing problem affects so much else until it happens to them. Glad to hear one ear is better though.... that's something. I think this is it for me forever now. Will just have to accept it I think. ENT seemed positive but something in my gut tells me otherwise. Also feeling very much like I have another virus as my glands are up, feel dizzy, exhausted etc. Back to the GP Monday. Perhaps more antibiotics needed. I do hope things improve for you, it's so miserable. Thanks for getting back to me. Sam 😊

I have just recently had the most awful strange 'flu'. Start with complete exhaustion, cough, headache and just sooo..... ill. Never had anything like it. However, I am now nearly completely deaf in right ear - cant bear it. I have never had this before and have read lots of really bad things on the net about permanent hearing loss caused by a virus (seemed pretty common so very nervous). Could you let me know that yours has hopefully resolved?
