help me stop

Posted , 13 users are following.

Please help . Ive been feeling really down the past two years and my drinking has got out of control . I drink a 75cl bottle of vodka a day with red bull energy drink . I hardly ever sleep and wake around 4.30 am every day have a glass of lucozade and then start on the vodka . How do i stop ? I feel ill and sick every day . I know i need to stop , but every day i tell myself tommorow will be the day , but tommorow never comes . Strangely i am never drunk i think i just must be used to it as the vodka has no effect on me now . I lost my younger brother 2 years ago in an accident just weeks before his 18th birthday . It was a big shock . Im agoraphobic so I very rarely leave the house . I can not turn to family as everybody is suffering with the loss of my brother . My panic attacks have got worse and I cant sleep . I have bad nightmares . Is there any way of just stopping drinking . I want to stop now

Thwnk you anybody that has taken the time to read

    Very good, Ninzy!

You might want to check out SMARTRecovery, they have a big online presence and regular group chats. Googling:

    OCD Action UK

will list an OCD online forum where you might find others working towards management of OCD.

My most sincere condolences for your loss. Unfortunately, it seems there's not much to do but to go through it. There's something about it that's so personal, it's just hard to put a finger on it. Maybe check in here:

In any case, stay in touch and let us know how you're doing, especially if you get stuck!

It's time to move on get over your brother's death, mourn him properly and find something to do alternatively to drinking.  Try and leave the house for a change of atmosphere and it will do you good.  Go for a walk with a friend even if it is a short distance.

Hi Ninzy, I'm so pleased you got the doctor's appt. Please tell him/her everything like you've told us here.

The mix of cocodamol and booze is not a good one.

You've done well today. Be careful not to cut down too quickly, but if you feel OK apart from the headache you're doing well.

The headache is a symptom of withdrawal from both caffeine and booze - it will get better. I used to moan to my alcohol counsellor that on days I didn't drink I woke with a headache the next morning, as if I had a hangover. He just said "great, that's great"

Many years ago when I gave up caffeine I had a morning headache for about a week than it stopped.

      I wish you well.

I have taken my 30/500 cocodamol which are usually good pain killers but they have not touched my headache . I hope it doesn't last long

I have 4 bottles of vodka im not sure if im best to get rid or keep them in the house ?

    Thanks x

Hey, well done so far today, Ninzy! Keep the bottles because if you get really bad withdrawals like shaking or sweating, you'll need to have a drink to stop them and prevent anything worse like a seizure.

You might want to Google as much as you can about alcohol use disorder, alcohol withdrawal and the Sinclair method so you can go to the doctor's on Friday armed with info.

      All the best

i wouldn't get rid of them. The alcohol is only just starting to clear out of your system. With a bottle of vodka a day, you are most likely alcohol dependent, that is your body cannot function without it.

Later, you may start to feel severe withdrawal systems, which will be far worse than the headaches you have now. The only way to stop this, will be to give your body more alcohol.

Until you see your GP on Thursday, I would advise you not to stop drinking. Drink less by all means, but give your body enough to avoid withdrawal. There are two safe ways to come off alcohol, taper down slowly, which is hard, because once you've had a ccouple of drinks, your willpower fades.

The other is by using a benzo like diazepam, which stops the withdrawal symptoms and allows you to come off alcohol gently. If you are ready to stop, ask your GP if he will prescribe them to you. A lot of GPs don't like handing them out, but some will.

You,r doing well Ninzi, you will need a drink, but try to make sure by the end of the day there is vodka left in the bottle, maybe a quarter, you can't just stop, but you,ll feel better that there is some left, which means by the end of tomorrow, there will be more than a quarter left, glad you are going to see your doctor, and hope to hell he will help as much as he can,and will help you with the Sinclair method.Keep strong,be positive.x

I am frightened as well and need help. I am in a terrible, terrible practical situation that I can't seem to get out of.

Wine is my only comfort in life right now. I have detoxed several times, but really don't want to stop drinking wine (but I would like to be able to drink normally again.) Also, my insurance company is getting tired of it and no doctor will precribe librium (I am in the U.S.A.)

I am averaging about two bottles of wine a day, but I have been sweating excessively for the past year. Now that it's 90 degrees out, I'm sopping wet when I go out and it's horrible.

I am also short of money until I get paid tomorrow, and don't have wine for today.

I'm very tired and scared and frustrated.

Anna, it sounds like the traditional approach (detox and abstinence) hasn't been very successful for you. I'm not surprised to hear it, as only 10% of people with Alcohol Use Disorder can stay abstinent for 4 years and many relapse multiple times, even within a year after attempting it.

Medically Assisted Treatment has a very high success rate for people who want to keep their drinking within low-risk limits or even give up drinking altogether. Did your doctor offer you any kind of medication to help with the craving that often drives people back to unhealthy drinking?

Well, you are getting backed into a corner right now and have some tough decisions to make. I'll be honest, there is no point in keep detoxing someone that is not able to give it up, you will only end up worse off.

Alcohol can sometimes open your pores up and sometime give you a faint smell of garlic. If you are sweating a lot, you must take fluids in.

I'm with ADE on this one, medically assisted treatment. As you are in the States, it would probably be naltrexone - available under generic brand names.

Thanks for letting us know, Ninzy! I hope it wasn't too uncomfortable for you. It sounds like you're moving in the right direction and you know more about your options than you did at the outset. Keep on moving forward and keep us up to date on how it's going for you!

Well, if you've managed two days, then you are probably over the worst of any possible withdrawal symptoms. Try to keep that spare time filled so that your mind doesn't turn to thoughts of drink.

One Recovery will be an alcohol recovery charity and tbh, my own fedback of using them and most others I have read here, is there are not very helpful/useful. And if you don't require medication (which it doesn't sound like you do) to help come off of alcohol, then I'd probably give them a miss.

"On the sheet it says provisional diagnosis copd"

      Are you a smoker?

Thanks for letting us know, Ninzy and well done. You said you were starting a cold, could that have affected the breathing test? Let's see what the blood tests show. And it's worth ringinthe recovery place , telling them your story and seeing what they suggest. How do you feel after two AF days?
