Help me with my **possible** perioral dermatitis

Hi Everyone.

I am at my wits end with my skin and wondered if anyone could suggest anything.

About eight months ago I went on a course of antibiotics for a wound that wouldn't heal. It did the trick, but a couple of days after I finished the course I began to get huge flakes of skin coming off each side of my nose and just under it. There was no real redness at first, just extremely flaky skin, which Ive never had before.

This then turned red on one side and was quite sore. This cleared up, but switched to the OTHER side of my nose and this is what I have had ever since.

It has come and gone in various degrees of severity, but generally, it is red and mildly flaky/dry with lots of little bumps which look like acne but never come to a head. Having said that, I have been getting cystic type acne right in the fold of the nose recently.

TREATMENT: I initially googled the problem and concluded it was perorial dermatitis. I didn't want steroids as I know that makes it worse, so I went to the doctor (who didn't know what it was and had to GOOGLE perioral derm!?)who gave me DUAC cream. That helped a bit but it just came back.

I have since been to numerous doctors who have given me everything which I have eventually tried.

I was advised to use an anti fungal cream,so used canesten (without steroid in it). This gave me some kind of allergic reaction and i got eczema all around the area where I used it. To treat this separate condition -ergh) i was prescribed a steroid cream, daktacort, which made the eczema go away but then the PD came back worse and now I'm back to square one.

I'm almost positive its a classic case of PD, and since I tried everything the only option is antibiotics. However, I am EXTREMELY reluctant to take any seeing as it would seem that anti biotics gave me it in the first place! It all started as soon as I finished a course of them, having never had it in my life before.

I have no idea what to do, and would appreciate ANY advice. Apologies for the huge post!

Note: I should also add that I have tried lots of home remedies like coconut oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar which have helped mildly but not gotten rid of it. In the past three months I've also cut out wheat, sugar, dairy and yeast (considering it may be candida overgrowth). I even switched to fluoride free toothpaste. Nothing has gotten rid of it! (except the steroid/anti-fungal, and only temporarily!)

I'm still here Ladies, Just had a really Busy Day in Paradise, You know how it is. I take two Enzyme Veg Caps before EVERY MEAL and Two with my ACV at Bed Time, this is Great for assisting the Blood cleansing through intestinal Clean up.

We will crack this problem together but it takes Time & Dedication.

    Kind regards

Hilarious post Fiona! Looking forward to the PD crime novel.

Also, the no water with food thing is because water dilutes the content of your stomach, including the digestive enzymes which break down food, so they're not able to work as well or efficiently. My friend who's a nutritionist told me that.

Apparently 30 mins before a meal is good because it means you don't eat your thirst too. I'm trying that with the ACV in it too, which is pretty akin to drinking salad dressing.

Lisa, I've been taking a photo every few days on my iPhone, and it's been really good to be able to go back and realize how much it's healed, and also remind myself that a few flakes aren't so bad after compared to what I had before! Definitely recommend trying it if you ever get another flare up.

Hope I didn't scare Harry away completely..

Enzymes are biological catalysts, they speed up the chemical reaction in and outside the body cells. Most enzymes work fastest in neutral conditions but their reaction is slow at low temperatures. I take them with mineral water at Body Temperature. Since enzymes are made of protein, they are sensitive to heat, Ph and heavy metal ions.

Nature supplied Enzymes embedded in our Biological vegetables, so that we may absorb its nutrients in a timely manner. Unfortunately the process of cooking our Food effectively inhibits the Enzymes which protect our System from microbial invasion and transform the Food we consume into Nutrients ready for our system to absorb through the intestinal wall.

Processed Food has ZERO Enzymes contained within.

Uncooked Cookbook is a great source of info on this.

    Harry!...... You're Back!

It was getting a little tense around here so glad to provide a laugh.

Thanks for the explanation re: enzymes Tash...I don't think Harry is the type to hold a grudge against us.

    Harry,

Do I have it right that it is always best to take enzymes with room temperature water.? Bare with me because I wasn't kidding when I said that I am exhausted therefor slow on the uptake....If you are in the heat of the summer, does you body temperature effect the effectiveness of the enzyme? I think that I am understanding that it should be taken at an ideal temperature.

I really want to benefit from this and I would like to get it straight.

    Thank You

P.S. You deserve a pat on the back Jennifer. Good Luck!

Take Enzymes with water as near to body temperature as possible 37 Celsius, if you are in the US then 98.6 Fahrenheit. ACV with the Mother should be taken the same way but Do Not pour Boiling water onto your Braggs ACV or you will render it useless.

    Hi all,

I got some blood tests run today and it turns out my iron levels are incredibly low (I'm 10, minimum should be at least 20). I've already been taking a supplement for about a month, so they must have been even worse back when the PD struck a few months ago. Definitely can see this being a factor, so could be worth looking into for others. I'm going to double my Spatone intake for the next month (a liquid iron supplement).

Also, although the Elidel has really brought down the inflammation and redness, the bumps are still there and the flaking is back in force. I'm not sure if this is part of the healing process, or if it's losing it's efficacy.. Any advice from other Elidel users or those whose PD healed?

I'm trying not to over do it with creams, but it's difficult going out with the flakes!

Also Fiona, I forgot to mention the Avene Cicalfate cream is definitely a thick cream, not a gel.

    Thanks all!

That is low. Watch out for fainting spells. I was diagnosed with anemia at 16 and I can have bad head-rushes if I don't keep on top of it. I wondered how much it had to do with PD too because iron is really important for healthy skin among other things.

There are two type of iron supplements that I know of....Ferrous Gluconate and Ferric. Ferric can be very binding whereas I don't have any digestive problems with Ferrous Gluconate. Just so you know.

I hope you are just going through a transitional stage with the Elidel cream but I did read that it worked well in combination with zinc ointment (cringing as I always seem to tout zinc!). Are you still using the Cicalfate? I started out with 18% zinc cream but switched to mixing zinc oxide powder to up the potency.

Good to know that the Cicalfate is a thick cream because I like the extra moisture for my skin in the winter.

Up again in the middle of the night due to these flushes! Back to bed for me

:-0 LOW IRON, Now there's a thing! CLASSIC, CLASSIC, Symptom of a Leaking Intestine.

I have a Person very close to my Heart in the UK that was told by his Doctor that He had Low Iron Levels. The Doctor suggested Blood Loss internally........ ??????? They conducted lots of tests and found nothing, He was Prescribed Iron Supplements and It didn't help. I put him on ACV, Enzymes and ProBiotics and his Iron Levels improved after 4 Months and have now (after Two Years) reached Normal levels.

I'm going to copy and Paste here because this is the Best explanation I can find.

Hyperpermeability or "leaky gut" syndrome is the name given to a very common disorder in which the cells lining the intestines become "leaky" due to inflammation. The abnormally large spaces present between the cells of the gut wall allow the entry of toxic material into the bloodstream that would normally be eliminated.

The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites, undigested protein, fat and toxic waste normally not absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a damaged, hyperpermeable gut membrane. This can be verified by special gut permeability urine tests or microscopic examination of the lining of the intestinal wall.

    Common Causes of Leaky Gut

Infections - fungal overgrowth, parasitic infections

    Drugs like

    NSAIDS, chemotherapeutic agents

    Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis

    Celiac disease

    Chronic alcoholism

    Strenuous exercise

    Food allergies

Leaky Gut and the Connection to Autoimmune Disease

Leaky gut syndrome is almost always associated with autoimmune disease. In fact, reversing symptoms of autoimmune disease depends on healing the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Any other treatment is just symptom suppression. An autoimmune disease is defined as one in which the immune system makes antibodies against its own tissues. Diseases in this category include lupus, alopecia areata, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome (dry eyes & dry mouth), vitiligo, thyroiditis, vasculitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, urticaria (hives), type 1 diabetes and Raynaud’s syndrome. Fortunately doctors are beginning to realize the essential role that the gut plays in these disease. Understanding the leaky gut phenomenon helps us see why allergies and autoimmune diseases develop and how to design therapies to restore intestinal integrity and reverse leaky gut.

Inflammation is a key trigger for leaky gut

Inflammation causes the spaces between the cells of the gut wall to become larger than usua. Then protein molecules are absorbed before they have a chance to be completely broken down. The immune system starts making antibodies against these larger molecules because it recognizes them as foreign, invading substances. Antibodies are made against these proteins derived from previously harmless foods. The immune system becomes hyperstimulated and over-reactive to substances that are not necessarily supposed to be dangerous.

Human tissues have proteins & antigens very similar to those on foods, bacteria, parasites, candida or fungi. The antibodies created by the leaky gut phenomenon against these antigens can get into various tissues and trigger an inflammatory reaction in that tissue when the corresponding food is consumed or the microbe is encountered. Autoantibodies are thus created and inflammation becomes chronic. If this inflammation occurs in a joint, autoimmune arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) develops. If it occurs in the brain, myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome) may be the result. If it occurs in the blood vessels, vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) is the resulting autoimmune problem... and so on.

If the antibodies end up attacking the lining of the gut itself, the result may be colitis or Crohn’s disease. If it occurs in the lungs, asthma is triggered on a delayed basis every time the individual consumes the food which triggered the production of the antibodies in the first place. It is easy to see that practically any organ or body tissue can become affected by food allergies created by the leaky gut. Because the foods can trigger delayed reactions, it can often be very hard to pinpoint the triggering entity.

Leaky gut may cause increase risk of infection and sensitivity to environmental chemicals

This ongoing inflammation also damages the protective coating of antibodies normally present in a healthy gut called IgA. Since IgA helps us ward off infections we become less resistant to viruses, bacteria, parasites and candida. These microbes are then able to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ. In the clinic we often find patients with leaky gut or autoimmune disease also have microbial infections ongoing in the gut.

Not only can leaky gut create food allergies as the proteins we consume are activating antibodies, but the microbes in the gut can cross over into the blood stream creating a toxic burden that overwhelms the liver's ability to detoxify. Often in severe cases of leaky gut, patients will develop sensitivities to perfume, cigarette smoke or other environmental chemicals. Common complaints are also "brain fog", confusion, poor focus/concentration, or memory loss.

Leaky gut also causes malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies

Finally, leaky gut may contribute to a long list of mineral deficiencies because of the ongoing inflammation and damage to carrier proteins. The most common are iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, magnesium deficiency which can lead to fatigue, neuropathies or muscle pain. Zinc deficiency due to malabsorption can result in hair loss or baldness as occurs in alopecia areata. Copper deficiency can occur in an identical way leading to high blood cholesterol levels and osteoarthritis. Further, bone problems develop as a result of the malabsorption of calcium, boron, silicon and manganese.

Please don't see this as Scaremongering as it is your lifeline to a Possitive Result.

Harry, if leaky gut is the answer how do we go about curing it? I'm a poor student with little money to be able to afford a naturopath/guidance on the issue. Do I need to change my diet? Which supplements do I need to take? How long do I need to do this for?

PM me your postal address and I will buy you your first 6 Months supply. Why? Because I can. All I ask of you is that One Day you do the same for someone else in your position.

The Diet is Simple, if it's not organic avoid it. (Take two Enzyme Caps before every meal) Don't eat Junk Food and You know what I mean now when I say Junk Food (None Organic, Processed ZERO Enzyme JUNK)

There is a way of speeding up the process but it's not cheap and it's not practiced by GP's because they are looking too deep into this Epidemic when the Answer is simple.

Stick to the ACV, Enzymes & ProBiotics (Candida Formula) and when you are earning good Money (Post Reproduction). Take Genotropin (Pfizer) (1iu for 5 days of the week and two rest days) This is an AMAZING Product, but I would not take it prior to reproduction as it is synthetic and it could pass on something to the Next Generation that is reversible. (I have no evaluation details to go on this, so better to proceed on the side of caution) Genotropin is a synthetic chain of 191 Amino Acids (Human Growth Hormone) and it repairs tissue and stimulates growth, It can be used as Maintenance at low levels (1iu) this repairs the tissue in your intestinal tract that is compromised by Fungus. BUT will also promote Muscle Gain and FAT Loss, it's gives you back Bone Density (Like you won't believe) The problem being is that it is exploited by a Lot of Doctors for financial gain and you can pay up to $5000 a month for this product, when in reality it cost around $200.

More later as I'm going out on my Boat shortly.

    Kind regards

LIsa, I meant to include you along with Harry when I asked what temperature the water should be when taking ezymes. I read cold water too. And then told body temperature. And then read cold water. Then read somewhere else luke-warm water.

Just asking Harry.....Do you think that I had leaky gut and everything else that you mentioned when I was diagnosed with anemia at 16? 16. I don't doubt that may be the case for some and intense measures are the answer but it all sounds so drastic.

Promises of free vitamins and Coconuteflower being financially strapped make me feel uncomfortable.

    Harry,

Can you provide me the details via PM of the enzymes and other products you're recommending?

    Thanks!

    Harry,

To add to my age of diagnosis of anemia at 16....I grew up on whole foods. My Mother just would not serve processed foods no matter how much we pleaded. I got around that one occasionally of course but all in all a healthy diet. Admittedly, my Grandmother's Scottish habit of boiling the stuffing out of everything may not have been that healthy.

    Harry,

Id just like to say thank you for your kind offer but I won't be giving my address out over the internet although I doubt your intentions are harmful and appreciate the advice.

I feel so overwhelmed with information, if I had leaky gut surely I would be seeing other GI issues such as food allergies, poor bowel habits etc. It just doesn't add up to me. Grubby skin is my only symptom. No bloating/headache, nothing. Only mild anxiety which I believe is due to having the damn thing for a year and a half now!!!! I just need a way to get rid of the final redness and what looks like little broken capillaries by the side of my nose but many people told me the only way to remove those is with a laser.

Also harry did you have PD yourself/know somebody who did and has been cured on your protocol?
