Help me with my **possible** perioral dermatitis

Hi Everyone.
I am at my wits end with my skin and wondered if anyone could suggest anything.
About eight months ago I went on a course of antibiotics for a wound that wouldn't heal. It did the trick, but a couple of days after I finished the course I began to get huge flakes of skin coming off each side of my nose and just under it. There was no real redness at first, just extremely flaky skin, which Ive never had before.
This then turned red on one side and was quite sore. This cleared up, but switched to the OTHER side of my nose and this is what I have had ever since.
It has come and gone in various degrees of severity, but generally, it is red and mildly flaky/dry with lots of little bumps which look like acne but never come to a head. Having said that, I have been getting cystic type acne right in the fold of the nose recently.
TREATMENT: I initially googled the problem and concluded it was perorial dermatitis. I didn't want steroids as I know that makes it worse, so I went to the doctor (who didn't know what it was and had to GOOGLE perioral derm!?)who gave me DUAC cream. That helped a bit but it just came back.
I have since been to numerous doctors who have given me everything which I have eventually tried.
I was advised to use an anti fungal cream,so used canesten (without steroid in it). This gave me some kind of allergic reaction and i got eczema all around the area where I used it. To treat this separate condition -ergh) i was prescribed a steroid cream, daktacort, which made the eczema go away but then the PD came back worse and now I'm back to square one.
I'm almost positive its a classic case of PD, and since I tried everything the only option is antibiotics. However, I am EXTREMELY reluctant to take any seeing as it would seem that anti biotics gave me it in the first place! It all started as soon as I finished a course of them, having never had it in my life before.
I have no idea what to do, and would appreciate ANY advice. Apologies for the huge post!
Note: I should also add that I have tried lots of home remedies like coconut oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar which have helped mildly but not gotten rid of it. In the past three months I've also cut out wheat, sugar, dairy and yeast (considering it may be candida overgrowth). I even switched to fluoride free toothpaste. Nothing has gotten rid of it! (except the steroid/anti-fungal, and only temporarily!)

I don't know how your health care system works in the U.K. but I can't see one reason why your GP wouldn't refer you to a dermatologist. For you, it is a chronic skin disorder that you have been dealing with for way too long. It isn't your GP's area of expertise and he/she should't deny you. Sounds like a controlling egomaniac.
Hang in there Sweetie

Fiona, I am also taking tumeric (tumeric+olive oil + peper), but it seems to enhance the effect of all the supplements that I am taking, so I have to be careful.
The funny thing is - I got my blood test results. Thyroid hormones are fine, the majority of hormones are fine, apart from one. Estrogen! I am really low in estrogen. (which would explain why I sometimes have sometimes do not have periods - huge irregularity) I don't know whether there is a correlation (since I had usually some problems with menstruation, and not with my face) but I honestly hope so, because than I would know where to "attack". Still, I have to wait to go back to Poland to go to my doctor, since I had my blood test taken there.
I have hope. I know that it has to be only better. And worst case scenario - next week I am starting antibiotics.
Congrats Jennifer! :D It is soo good to hear that you managed to clear it almost completely.
Take care!
Alex.

Quite agree re: epsom salt baths. I do detox bath of 1 cup epsom, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup sea salt and tablespoon of ginger in bath. You should stay in it for at least 40 minutes in very hot water with the shower curtain closed for the full benefit of the steam but I rarely make it that long with these bloody hot-flashes. I'm like a wet noodle when it's done....really relaxed.

When I started taking turmeric, I mixed it with oil at first too and am wondering which is best...oil or milk. I know that it should be taken with a pepper and a fat....ANYWAY...I have to run right now but want to ask a question about your post that I didn't quite understand. Can you take a look here later on today or tomorrow? Will post later
Thanks

1) yeast infection
2) change in hormones
3) topical steroid use
4) antibiotic use
5) numerous skin allergies
So, I did everything. Changed my toothpaste, Changed my face wash, body wash, laundry detergent. Rewashed every piece of clothing, all the sheets towels and blankets. I used yogurt and apple cider vinegar and clay soap. I bought $300 worth of Mama Nature, oregano oil, lilac extract, coconut oil, and emu oil. I washed my face with cetaphil, then didnt wash it at all and instead just massaged it with oil. I told two dermstologists what I thought it was (perioral dermatitis), and they agreed with me.
and then one day I decided to get a third opinion. And i opted to keep my mouth shut, play dumb, and just see what this dermatologist came up with without me suggesting anything.
and she diagnosed me with poly cystic ovarian syndrome. And said this rash and acne pattern on the chin is classic. She said perioral dermatitis is often "in cahoots" with something else that is going on. In my case, hormonal. She gave me Avar cleansing cream, and a topical prescription strength retinoid cream. The red scaly itchy patches peeled and stung for about a week, and it has forced more and bigger pimples to come out, and the itchy bumps got worse for a week or so. But then one day I woke up and... The redness was gone. The itchy bumps were gone, and other than the small few pimples that come and go in a matter of a day, this regimen has completely worked for me. I can tell that the pimples now are just because my skin is purging them out from below the surface since that is what a retinoid does.
Nourish your skin now + retinoid speeding skin cell turnover + sulfur soap like Avar = healthy skin in a few weeks.
it took months of desperation, everything under the sun, and 3 dermatologists to find the right answer. And i didn't have to use antibiotics. Retinoids are basically pure vitamin A, so really the answer was sulfure and vitamin A for those who are worried about medicinal approaches vs natural cures. What is most unnatural is causing yourself this much stress just to avoid taking medicine. This stress is causing you more damage than this topical retinoid ever will.
Go get another opinion. And another one. And keep going until you find a regimen that works for you.

Hi Lisa! Thanks for the answer! So basically after starting Elidel around 3 months ago, you have cleared PD completely, and for now you have not had any reoccurance? That sounds amazing. I am thinking whether Elidel or Zineryt would be better, but I think I will go with Elidel.
Congratulations, and hope everything will be better with hormones and stuff.
