Help me with my **possible** perioral dermatitis

Hi Everyone.

I am at my wits end with my skin and wondered if anyone could suggest anything.

About eight months ago I went on a course of antibiotics for a wound that wouldn't heal. It did the trick, but a couple of days after I finished the course I began to get huge flakes of skin coming off each side of my nose and just under it. There was no real redness at first, just extremely flaky skin, which Ive never had before.

This then turned red on one side and was quite sore. This cleared up, but switched to the OTHER side of my nose and this is what I have had ever since.

It has come and gone in various degrees of severity, but generally, it is red and mildly flaky/dry with lots of little bumps which look like acne but never come to a head. Having said that, I have been getting cystic type acne right in the fold of the nose recently.

TREATMENT: I initially googled the problem and concluded it was perorial dermatitis. I didn't want steroids as I know that makes it worse, so I went to the doctor (who didn't know what it was and had to GOOGLE perioral derm!?)who gave me DUAC cream. That helped a bit but it just came back.

I have since been to numerous doctors who have given me everything which I have eventually tried.

I was advised to use an anti fungal cream,so used canesten (without steroid in it). This gave me some kind of allergic reaction and i got eczema all around the area where I used it. To treat this separate condition -ergh) i was prescribed a steroid cream, daktacort, which made the eczema go away but then the PD came back worse and now I'm back to square one.

I'm almost positive its a classic case of PD, and since I tried everything the only option is antibiotics. However, I am EXTREMELY reluctant to take any seeing as it would seem that anti biotics gave me it in the first place! It all started as soon as I finished a course of them, having never had it in my life before.

I have no idea what to do, and would appreciate ANY advice. Apologies for the huge post!

Note: I should also add that I have tried lots of home remedies like coconut oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar which have helped mildly but not gotten rid of it. In the past three months I've also cut out wheat, sugar, dairy and yeast (considering it may be candida overgrowth). I even switched to fluoride free toothpaste. Nothing has gotten rid of it! (except the steroid/anti-fungal, and only temporarily!)

My perioral dermatitis was cured in 3 weeks. Follow these steps:

    1. STOP PUTTING ANYTHING ON YOUR FACE. No makeup, no face wash, no lip balm, no moisturiser, no essential oils, NOTHING. Especially avoid products such as Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment that has a hidden ingredient, Balsam of Peru (or myroxylon), and can trigger perioral dermatitis.

    2. You seriously have to follow Step 1. Although it may be tempting and it might feel soothing to put something on the rash, but trust me, your pores can heal themselves. They need to breathe.

For about the first two days, it will seem like things are getting worse. Your dermatitis may get really red in your skin's attempt to release all the toxins. It will start flaking up, and this is a sign that it's healing. DO NOT SCRATCH/EXFOLIATE IT. Just leave it, and rinse only with water.

    3. In three-or-so days your body will have detoxified its skin, and you will now see improvements with each day that goes by. My perioral dermatitis was cured in 3 weeks. Avoid touching it with your hands.

    4. After the perioral dermatitis has subsided, try to stay as natural as possible with your skincare regime. Water is the best cleanser.

I can guarantee you, this is the most natural and effective treatment.

My face has been a nightmare for over a year.  All doctors have been useless and I've done it all on my own by googling for hours on end.  So after being told I have rosacea, excema, dermatitis....and that I'd need lots of laser therapy to get rid of scarring after using the expensive creams...my face is almost clear with no scarring from using a castor oil/selson blue (dandruff shampoo) mask daily, and then teatree oil and coconut oil in the morning and at night.  I'm left with this annoying cluster of bumps around my mouth...which I never had before and I was extremely frustrated.  So I have read a lot and realized it's perioral dermatitis, I have now taken toothpaste and gum out of my daily routine....either the flouride or the whitening agent in the toothpaste is causing this problem. I use baking soda to brush my teeth and my mouth is almost healed. Buttttt...when it does breakout I put listerine on the spots with a qtip and it gets rid of it almost immediately.  I also put castor oil on it and that seems to rid of it quickly.  My lips were also extremely dry, flaky and gross before and since stopping toothpaste they are nice again.  Give it a shot!

Hello, I don't know if anyone still uses this forum? But I think I am struggling with the same problem I'm 16 *sigh* and have this around my nose and near my lips but not very severe. Iv tried nothing on it yet and wondered what you found to be the best method?

Hi all, wanted to share my technique as it is fairly simple & cheap & has worked a few times for me now. Hopefully it will help some of you out there!

The first time of course took me months & months before I really knew what I was dealing with & by then I was desperate so I followed the prescribed 60 day course of (IIRC) doxycycline. This worked, but when it recurred the following year I wanted to avoid nuking my system with such a heavy course of antibiotics.

For reference, I was already gluten free before this started about 4 years ago & regularly took ACV & probiotics (I usually buy Jarrow EPS). I had been using no-sulfate shampoo/face wash/toothpaste since well before this started as well.

I have noticed it seems to happen every spring/summer after I have had to use even a short course of steroid inhalers/nasal sprays due to occasional allergy related asthma & inflammatory sinus congestion. Now I try to remember to start taking my allergy meds well in advance of peak allergy seasons. I take generic Allegra from about March until October, sometimes November (basically all year haha). From Costco nearly a year's worth (2 bottles) runs me $60, which I can swallow, so to speak! If symptoms still get really unmanageable I may add sudafed, mucinex and/or generic Astelin (non-steroid Rx nasal spray) as needed. Additionally, my doctor is usually able to set aside sample bottles of the Astelin when I don't have prescription coverage.

So long story short, here's what I do as soon as I notice the first telltale signs of this pesky POD business:

Mix 3 TBSP ACV w/ 1/4 tsp baking soda & heat in small saucepan over medium heat until starting to simmer & reduce slightly. In small dish, mix 1/2 tsp cornstarch w/ splash of ACV until dissolved & add to saucepan. Simmer about 1-2 minutes until mixture is a loose gel consistency. Keep in mind it will thicken a little more upon cooling. Transfer back to small dish before it gums up & dries in a thin layer in your saucepan. Let cool & then cover or transfer to small container. I usually end up with about 1 TBSP in the end product.

I apply this all atound the area every night after removing makeup/washing my face & leave overnight. Within a week of regular use my skin is usually clear & healed without any adverse reactions such as burning or peeling, since the baking soda buffers the acidity of the ACV & allows you to use it in a concentrated rather than diluted form.

If anyone tries this please let me know how it works for you! I would love to know if this helps anyone else. I am finishing using it successfully now for the third year in a row, so I felt it was time to share, especially since there is so little to lose. Give it a shot & good luck!!

      Update -

This batch wasn't quite doing the trick so when I ran out I reformulated to the following:

      1.5 TBSP ACV

      .5 tsp baking soda

      .25 tsp corn starch

Mixture will bubble up a good bit so add the baking soda slowly.

Microwave in 2-3 10 sec increments to thicken. Keep a close eye on it as it can quickly bubble over.

Since I made this change a few days ago, my POD is nearly gone. Good luck!

    Hi,

My sister suffers from perioral dermatitis and to treat it she uses a blend of fresh mint and honey and applies to the affected area and leaves for 20min then washes the mix off with luke warm water. this normaly gets rid of the rash within 7-9days and the rash rarelly appears.

in the past it was alaways on her face and she used to use hydrocortisone but that didnt clear up her skin at all. i hope this helps you.

I get PD with certain guys I've been with. I haven't had it in about 2 years. But it flared back up after I got back together with an ex. I don't know how or why I only get it with certain guys. It started on the left side of my face and made its way to my nose and on my chin. But I am I picker and I have picked and messed with my face so now it's red, dry, and I have huge bumps on my face from it. I usually ice it, put antibiotic ointment on it, play face lotion, aloe Vera gel, BP 2%, I've tried powered sugar/oil oil scrub, anti-fungal cream. NOTHING IS HELPING. I hate it I feel so insecure. I'm 22 and it's really embarrassing to have this on my face. I'm thinking it never really has gone away because I sometimes get these small, pimple like bumps on the top of my lip and I've done research and people are its from PD. I don't have health insurance to see a dermatologist and I never have gone to one to get any help. Any suggestions?

I had a red ring all around my mouth up to my nose and cheeks and chin I use sudocrem and think it is the zinc that helps get rid of redness when it was really bad I used viscopaste bandages hope this helps it does dry it up so then need to moistutise it

It could be the toothpaste they are using.  The same thing happens to me....and I will buy a natural toothpaste and make them use it if they are seeing me that day.  I get it from either the flouride or the sls in toothpaste.  As for how to help this...do not try to squeeze the little bumps...it makes them a hundred times worse.  What I do is take a q tip and put listerine (not scope...just listerine) on the dots...not on the rest of your face as it will burn it. Then rinse after a half hour or so and put hydrocortisone cream on the spots.  It should make them go away before they get bigger, spread or get worse.  I have also tried dawn dishsoap and that has also helped...but again just on the spots as it will burn your face a bit.  I understand your pain...I am 36 and divorced and back in the dating world and feel like a teenager so I have tried everything under the sun.ll,this is the only thing that works for me.

Ps. Dermatologists are useless and just give you expensive creams that don't work.  I learned that the hard way.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, it's frustrating. I'm impatient so I tend to pick at my face and hope it gets better (which makes no sense). My roommates think I'm depressed because I won't leave me room, but I'm too embarrassed to tell them what's going on with my face.

I complained to my friends for awhile and I think they got annoyed...they said 'it's just your face who cares' ....um how about everyone looks at it as it's my face lol.  I picked at mine for awhile..which made it look way worse...then I think because I did that I'd get a crack in the side of my mouth that looked like a cold sore...so that was even more upsetting.  I do this listerine and dawn thing now and it goes away within a day and is easy to cover with make up. I sometimes put listerine on it before I put my make up on it as I feel it will help get rid of it.

I wash my face with castor oil...which sounds like it would make your face break out...but it does not...it's very clarifying.

Oh and I usually try to rub listerine on each side of my mouth and rinse it off before bed...mentally this makes me think it will keep it away....and I have maybe a bump every month or two...instead of weekly.

I don't have any new bumps on my left side. I just keep peeling off dead skin and it's just red now with a small bump. Any suggestions with that? I've been putting on bacitracin ointment on it

I've been using the hydrocortisone cream...I feel like it makes the redness go away...and heals the remaining area quicker than anything else.  It's less than $5. Andddd....I do not use lotion on my face...I use olive oil with a bit of water...again it will not make your face break out or look oily if you just use a little with water.

Is it just with guys that this happens with...or in life in general?  I'd seriously take a look at the toothpaste thing....it was definitely a cause for mine.  But also some foods trigger it....for example any sort of pasta sauce or red salad dressing and my face breaks out immediately at the sides.  So keep note of things you've used or eaten when this happens and just try cutting them out...which is sadsad

oh and maybe try adding a vitamin b complete to your daily routine...sometimes it can be from a vitamin b deficiency.

It literally only happens with certain guys. The first guy it happened with I thought it was his stubble that would cause my break outs and he had semi bad acne. This other guy had stubble but it never has been this bad. I've dated other guys with stubble and I haven't had a break out. It's odd.

People say not to use hydrocortisone because it makes the rash come back. It works for some I suppose
