Help me with my **possible** perioral dermatitis

Hi Everyone.
I am at my wits end with my skin and wondered if anyone could suggest anything.
About eight months ago I went on a course of antibiotics for a wound that wouldn't heal. It did the trick, but a couple of days after I finished the course I began to get huge flakes of skin coming off each side of my nose and just under it. There was no real redness at first, just extremely flaky skin, which Ive never had before.
This then turned red on one side and was quite sore. This cleared up, but switched to the OTHER side of my nose and this is what I have had ever since.
It has come and gone in various degrees of severity, but generally, it is red and mildly flaky/dry with lots of little bumps which look like acne but never come to a head. Having said that, I have been getting cystic type acne right in the fold of the nose recently.
TREATMENT: I initially googled the problem and concluded it was perorial dermatitis. I didn't want steroids as I know that makes it worse, so I went to the doctor (who didn't know what it was and had to GOOGLE perioral derm!?)who gave me DUAC cream. That helped a bit but it just came back.
I have since been to numerous doctors who have given me everything which I have eventually tried.
I was advised to use an anti fungal cream,so used canesten (without steroid in it). This gave me some kind of allergic reaction and i got eczema all around the area where I used it. To treat this separate condition -ergh) i was prescribed a steroid cream, daktacort, which made the eczema go away but then the PD came back worse and now I'm back to square one.
I'm almost positive its a classic case of PD, and since I tried everything the only option is antibiotics. However, I am EXTREMELY reluctant to take any seeing as it would seem that anti biotics gave me it in the first place! It all started as soon as I finished a course of them, having never had it in my life before.
I have no idea what to do, and would appreciate ANY advice. Apologies for the huge post!
Note: I should also add that I have tried lots of home remedies like coconut oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar which have helped mildly but not gotten rid of it. In the past three months I've also cut out wheat, sugar, dairy and yeast (considering it may be candida overgrowth). I even switched to fluoride free toothpaste. Nothing has gotten rid of it! (except the steroid/anti-fungal, and only temporarily!)

Try rubing some sea salt (not the table salt)leave it on for a while and then wash it off. If any improvement, let me know then will tell what to do next

I have found all your comments very useful because I too have had this problems for 5 months, trying numerous creams. Then reading one of the comments I tried the canesten 1% clotrimazole cream for a few days I could see an improvement in the redness, seemed to dry it up. Then investigated further to find out more about yeast & candida.
Went to the doctors advised them of my conclusions of candida, got a week prescription of 50mg capsules of fluconzole and within 2 days I'm clear.
I'm 45 btw so fingers crossed this is the answer x

I wanted to share my experience with Perioral Dermatitis in hopes it will help because as all the suffer from this condition know it's a long and awful process. So I have had my outbreak for about 3 months now I have tried everything recommended (coconut oil, yogurt mask, apple cider vinegar) and what has finally helped me is first I stopped using floride and sodium lauryl sulfate products all together from tooth paste to shampoos then every morning and night I start with washing my face with Cetaphil antibacterial face bar and then follow with using a face wash called Spectro jel (the life saver!!!) for acne prone skin then finish with the blemish stick from burts bees, It works it's amazing ! I hope this helps.

I realize this post is older, but I would like to share with you my personal experience with periorofacial dermatitis as I had a very similar experience to yours...
About 5 or 6 years ago (I would have been in my late 20s) I started getting little red pimples and what looked like little whiteheads around my nose and mouth. I have had a great complexion most of my life, but had experienced the occasional minor outbreaks here and there. I began treating it like acne, using OTC cleansers and pimple creams. When that didn't work I tried some other topicals that we had used at the vet clinic where I was working, one of which had a steroid in it. Nothing ever made it better and it was very sore and itchy. I was also at my wit's end after a few months (I forget how long exactly) so I went to see a general physician. He really didn't give me the time of day and wasn't very interested in the history I had prepared to give him. He was quick to prescribe me oral antibiotics and went on with his day.
I think I was on antibiotics for about 10 days. Nothing. I was starting to get the same thing around my eyes. Frustrated, I asked a nurse friend if she could recommend a Dr who was good with skin conditions. She did, I made an appointment the next day.
I wrote down a very detailed and organized history of when it started and everything I had tried to treat it with. I also did very heavy research after the antibiotics didn't kick it. So, basically, I was sure I knew that I had perioral dermatitis by the time I got to Dr #2.
He was wonderful. I presented my oral history, followed by the written history. I never gave him my thoughts on the diagnosis. He actually got excited. He proceeded to tell me that I did indeed have periorofacial dermatitis and that it was not common, but rarer yet most people who get it don't have it to the extent of having it around their eyes. (He also explained that he loved doing dermatology stuff - he was a D.O., which specializes in osteopathic medicine of the whole body- and that he may never see another case like mine the rest of his career). He prescribed clindamycin cream (antibiotic), metronidazole cream (anti-fungal), and tacrolimus ointment (immunosuppressor). While the tacrolimus was quite expensive I was DESPERATE to get rid of the problem! I treated with those products one to two times daily as prescribed for a couple weeks and it all went away.
5-6 years later I am experiencing it again. I have the tacrolimus ointment still, and tho it has expired, I am using it in hopes that it will still work. With my busy mom schedule I forget to apply it as I should, but it does help! I am debating on whether or not to return to the Dr to see if I need the other creams. I may see if I can get results from the ointment first.
I hope this story helps you and /or anyone else that has PD!

In the end, my skin started swelling around my lips, inside my mouth and eyes and it was diagnosed as allergic. I then had patch testing and it was confirmed as an allergy to MI (google it!) a chemical preservative. I would strongly suggest that you push for patch testing if you are experiencing flaking around the mouth as well. Good luck....It is a long road back to normal skin I know!

I've been reading the posts and realize that I have experienced the dry flakey skin in the nasal folds ,in ear canal of opposite ear, in hairline at neck and also the crack/ blisters at the corner of the mouth. I did try tea tree oil, acne cream even coal tar shampoo. Recently I tried an athletes foot anti fungal wash on my nose crusties ,followed with a cheap athletes foot cream. Even put the cream on what I had been told is roscacea. After one day of treatment the dry skin is gone by the nose and the red skin is returned to normal. I have had the so called roscacea for 30 years or more. I am pleased that the dry skin is gone as well. I feel that my triggers were antibiotics, after knee replacement or steroids for inflammation. Goes to show you anything is possible.

Hi! So i am 14 years old and i have been dealing with perioral dermititas for about 5 years. It started at first with chapped lips and has lead to a red ring around the mouth and itchy dry skin around my lips and chin. My parents have been so supportive about it because like teen years it has been an emotional rollercoaster like "why me?" and "how can i get this to go away?" I have tried over 30 products trying to get rid of my case. I have recently tried getting rid of fluride and sodium. Not sure if it has made a difference though. My family has a history of celiac disease and i found out about a year ago that i have a sensitivity to gluten. It has been rough trying to get it out of my diet though. I am now trying healthy/ organic things from Follain a natural company that is amazing! I am also trying Osmia products in hope of getting back my soft, non-itchy/dry face. Any recommendations? It has made my life really tough going though things that kids in my grade are not going through and answering there questions about why my face is so dry etc. Thank you!
