Help Please! Hip dysplasia 32 year old.

I’m writing on behalf of my wife,  aged 32. BMI 21.5.

12 months ago she was as fit as a fiddle. Started to get pain in the groin. To cut a long story short,  now she can hardly walk 100 metres and only at the pace of a 3-year-old. She has been diagnosed with congenital (partial) hip dysplasia and given physiotherapy, which made it worse.

She saw a specialist 6 months ago who assured her it would not get worse. He was clearly wrong. It was him that recommended physio.

Now referred to a hip surgeon.

Any advice or information greatly appreciated.  My wife is not against surgery if it will make it better with low risk (we have a young child).

Thank you.

Rusty, that's too bad about your wife's pain and disability! First, let me say that you may also want to post on the more active hip replacement forum, since you are likely to get more answers there. Here is the link: https://patient.info/forums/discuss/browse/hip-replacement-1109

Second, it sounds like she is quite debilitated. Exercises will not correct problems with bones, so I'm not surprised that PT made it worse. Hopefully, the hip surgeon can do imaging and physical exam, and recommend what he thinks will be the best kind of treatment for her. Many people over on the hip replacement forum have had hips replaced due to dysplasia. She might be a good candidate since she can barely walk! She can't stay like that for the rest of her life - she is so young! I have also seen quite a few young people, even in their teens and 20's and 30's with THR's posting on this and other hip replacement forums. Best of luck to her!

      Thanks

They’ve done all the imaging / MRI and X Ray. We had it done abroad too (we were abroad 6 months), and 4 different consultants adviced that it wasn’t going to get better and she is heading towards a knife, sooner rather than later.

Only in the UK did they insist that it could be improved by physiotherapy. The physio made her ability to walk which was say 7/10 to 2/10 in one session.

      Thx for your advice.

    Hi Rusty,

While I am 20 years older than your wife at 52, I also had congenital hip dysplasia in my left hip and just had it replaced 5 weeks ago. If arthritis has not set in there is a procedure called peri-acetabular osteotomy (PAO) that is common for younger dysplasia patients (under 50). Of course suitability relies on a number of conditions.

My only suggestion is to seek an orthopedic surgeon who specializes with dysplasia to discuss treatment options specific to the condition. Dysplasia does add a layer of complexity to hip replacement surgery.

My recovery from the surgery so far has been quite successful and I look forward to a much better quality of life as the weeks progress....no more limping, aches or pains. No more watching life pass by on the sidelines. It is well worth it!

Best wishes to you both and good luck!

Hi Rusty! Unfortunately,  I have been having very similar issues. I have had hip and lower back pain for YEARS but it was manageable...until about 2 months ago. After xrays and an MRI it was confirmed that I have "mild" hip dysplasia (which has caused arthritis) and a possible labral tear. I have started physical therapy with absolutely no improvement.  I have an appointment set up with an orthopedic surgeon later this month but until then I am on a pain and anti inflammatory regimen for pain. I should add that I am 36 with 2 young children, so I understand how frustrating this is.

hi, i can see that this post was a few years ago but i can relate to it so much, i would love to know how your wife is doing now. i am now 32.. 3 years ago i had my son which triggered my hip dysplashia, i was fit active and healthy. a year after they put me through physio, then had an x-ray where they found dysplasia, at this point i could still walk and do normal day to day things. 4 months later MRI where they found a cyst. results took so long i seen a private surgeon, they seen the dysplasia and cysts inside and outside the bone as well as a labral tear. i have been refered to have the cysts drained but only from seeing a private surgeon. if i didnt see this private surgeon i would still be on the waiting list for the young persons hip specialist where i am still awaiting an appointment. i am now almost completley immobile, i can limp

a small distance, have 2 children, cant run , cant walk far , cant do any of the things i use to do with my kids , ive been signed off work for 8 weeks was suppose to start my nurse training next year. its ruining my life. Its so nice to see someone going through what i have. all tho it was years ago. i hope you respond! thank you so much x

    Hi Leanne

How's your hip since your last post? In case you're still active on here you're in good company. My hip just decided to stop working one day while on a walk. Hip dysplasia, some arthritis and a Synovial cyst have all be identified. I've been doing physio since April (4 months) and still can't walk more that 250m without descending into a limp and pain bad enough that I quit. I've a much stronger core due to physio but still can't walk far. I have a steroid injection for the cyst this week and then getting together with the hip surgeon. I'm a young 50 and I'm not accepting any of this limping, chronic pain etc. I've got stuff to do. So dig deep and hopefully thrust your tenacity it will improve.
