Help! Thyroid or just anxiety?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced what I am going through right now. For the last two weeks I have been having the strangest feelings in the sides of my neck/throat, tightness around the back of my neck, some neck and shoulder aches and on the left side of my head I have this strange sort of ache that stems from the left back side of my head that seems to go up and above my eye as well as in my left temple. Not exactly like a headache but like tension and pressure. Not like my tension headaches. I can also feel it on the left top side of my head too. It's so annoying but I have been having it everyday and it seems to be worse in the morning and I immediately have an anxiety attack because I think it's another day of feeling this feeling. I can't help but think I am dying or going to die very soon. I went to the doctor's last week and she said I didn't have a brain tumor and that I didn't show any indicators of needing a scan, but I can't help but think I have a tumor! I also had my blood tested but haven't gotten the results back yet. I am kind of hoping it's my thyroid and not something more serious. So has anyone ever experienced these symptoms or does anyone have thyroid problems who have experienced these? Any help is much appreciated, I am desperate. Thank you!!

Yes it sounds like either tention or a slight dislocation.

    But not your thyroid

    Do you believe in chiropractors?

You could have one look at it and see if they could help.

No I haven't. It's so weird, I feel like I can't fully describe it. I should probably have my eyes checked as well for a new script. I only thought thyroid bc it affects that area and that's what the doctor thought when she sent me for the bloodwork, which has now come back normal. It's so weird. Idk if it's anxiety or something more serious. It feels like a lot of pressure.

Hey hun these are the symptoms i have had for just over a year now its horrible my bloods all came back normal to but it's so scary i have swallowing issues to. Do you find it makes u more anxious? X

Is it around the back of the neck or the front.

if it is mostly ar all around the back like I said before it could be a dislocation.

Think back have you done anything that might have caused this.

      are you an active person.

Did you fall or anything that could have caused this?

And don't think it is more serious.

That in it's self is a major sign of anxiety blowing things out of proportion.

but I feel it is more a slight injury or just anxiety.

Hi Katie. So sorry you're having the same symptoms! And yes it does! Someone below mentioned TMJ and actually it sounds like a lot of what I have. Maybe you should look into it too? I am going to see my doc about it next week. Hope your get it sorted, too! X

It is around both, but recently just the back of my head and it goes back and forth between the right and the left sides of my head including temples and front of my head by eyebrows. I think maybe it could be TMJ. But I am feeling less anxious about it and know that it's not a tumor! smile

I'm having these symptoms , as well as lots of others its hard to determine what's anxiety or illness,  I'm always scared if I don't go Dr's its gonna be something worse, then I try rationalize it but its so hard sometimes, so I know. How u feel .☺

Hi, Kristen:  Have you ever been checked for TMJ...I have depression and anxiety and I grind my teeth every night...that throws your jaw off which causes weird feelings in your neck and top of your head, etc...You have to go to a dentist for this, and I hope this helps...I have those weird feelings all the time because I didn't think I needed my splint to keep me from grinding my teeth, but I guess I good...Good luck and God bless

Yes, I didn't think of that.

      That could be another possibility.

A TMJ headache can make you afraid that you have a brain tumor, but you don't...try to put heat or cold on your jaws and try, even though it is very hard, to relax more...believe me, years ago I went to four different doctors and told them that I thought I had a brain tumor..One of them suggested I see my dentist for TMJ...I'm so glad he did...

Thank you so much Carole! I am going to grt it checked out next week. I'm sure I don't have a brain tumor, as well as all the docs tell me that too even though I have never had a scan (they say I don't have any indicators to send me for one) and ican now rationalize that the likelihood of me having one is very slim.

Did you have back/shoulder and sides of neck achey-ness too?

No I'm not but really want to be on something to help! My bloods came back all normal too, but I can't help but notice those uncomfortable feelings/pains. Sometimes I get it in the front of my chest in my collar bone. It feels like it's tired and kind of twingey, is the best way to describe it. And it always feels tense and like pressure on the left side of my head starting from the back left side of my head right on through. It is SO weird!!! I just started to worry that now I have head and neck  cancer!

Kristen, most likely you don't have anything wrong with you, but you are going to have to learn to relax...I don't know your age, but try to see if your doctor will start you out on a very small dose of anti-anxiety medicine...I sure hope it helps...

Haha I totally understand! It's comforting knowing others have the same symptoms. I went to the docs again yesterday and she assured me that it's just anxiety and that the physical symptoms often manifest through the shoulders, neck and head. I am starting to feel better now, though. I just have to always rationalize with myself. I am only 29, neck and head cancers are very rare and don't present symptoms like mine or sometimes at all, my blood work was perfect, and I don't have a brain tumor! I just need CBT! Haha it's just our anxiety and we need to try to remember that! Xx
