Help with IBS..

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me with pain experienced with IBS, I have the classic symptoms of IBS but recently I have been experiencing more stomach spasms, and the pain is chronic. I wondered if anyone has tried any different medication or herbal medication what has worked for them and settled some of the symptoms of IBS.

Many thanks,

hi sadly doctors rarely investigate this condition properly....have you ever had an endoscopy or a gastroscopy?? Just wondered if the cause of your pain had been investigated. I have these type of symptoms caused by inflammation and just been prescribed Plaquenil (more for inflammation in my feet it has to be said) but it has settled down the inflammation in my gut too which is brilliant. I was diagnosed with gastritis during a gastroscopy. Caused by inflammation. Hope this helps. Push for proper diagnosis as ibs is just a throw away used by most docs when they don't know what's wrong with you. Sorry, that's my opinion on it. I was diagnosed with ibs many years ago and it turned out I had an auto immune disease.

      Hi Margaret,

oh gosh that sounds terrible! it's such a pain how doctors can wrongly diagnose people, at least you've got to the bottom of it and you know what condition it is you have. What symptoms do you experience with that auto immune disease? I have had colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy to rule out other conditions such as crohn's disease because I was bleeding after every BM, but I have never had a endoscopy nor seen a gastro specialist. I have tried over the counter IBS medication but nothing seems to help! if my pain gets any worse then I'll have to go back to my GP in the hope that they can help me.

      All the best,

Please help,  what is the difference between gastritis and ibs? Sorry to sound so thick.

it's not thick at all. I don't really know what IBS is, it just means nothing to me. But gastritis caused by inflammation of the stomach lining and is not really caused by food that you eat which undoubtedly can aggravate it but not 'cause' it. So in effect, I could eat the perfect diet and still have stomach issues. And I have done that. I have eaten a very expensive and very perfectly balanced - in terms of salt sugar carbs etc - diet and I have had stomach issues. When my illness is well controlled and inflammation is controlled, I could eat anything on the planet and have no pain and no dietary issues whatsoever and not need to take anything for my tummy. Hope that makes sense. I mean I'm not a doctor or anything. Just someone who has stomach/bowel issues related to an auto immune condition. I know I don't have ibs. Years of on and off suffering tell me I don't.

Couldn't IBS also flare up on and off?, or is it more an everyday occurrence? (if ignored)

BTW: DId you have all the IBS elimination tests (to work out that it's not IBS). e.g.

      Fecal calprotectin and lactoferrin,

       Hyperthyroid (TSH)

       Full Blood Count (FBC)

       c-Reative Protein (CRP)

       Fasting Blood Sugar (FBC)

       creatin (to see kydney function)

I have a form of vasculitis. That's what causes the gut/stomach issues.

How was the diagnosis done?. there must have been some tests.

Yes over a year of testing. All other illnesses ruled out or in. But I had a diagnosis of ibs casually handed down some time before without proper testing which was wrong.

    Hi Sunnysky,

Some useful info about Antispasmodic Medicines:

    https://patient.info/health/antispasmodic-medicines

It says there's no best one as such, but if one doesn't work try the other one. However, usually best to start with the smooth muscle relaxants. e.g: Alverine, Mebeverine, Peppermint oil.

Came across the above Antispasmodic Medicines link while reading the IBS leaflet at: https://patient.info/pdf/4286.pdf#

That may also be useful to you if you haven't seen it already.

Nice Nickname by the way...this message is going from sunsea to Sunnysky lol

      Hi Sunsea,

Thank you for the useful link, I'll keep it mind and read more into it. I want to start on a soft medication rather than something hard, so a muscle relaxant sounds perfect! have you tried any of these medications/herbal relaxers yourself?

...great minds think alike! like your name as well. smile

Buscopan and nurofen help my IBS.  What medications have your tried so far?  Maybe try a food diary or the Low Fodmap diet.  Try distraction techniques like light exercise like walking or a hobby such as listening to music to take your mind off the pain and reduce stress which is a major factor in IBS.  My IBS pain was chronic for three and a hald monrhs before diagnosis because no one could help me.  After diagnosis, my panic completely cleared up and my pain is mainly in remission and onlybcomes back when stressed.

      Hi pippa,

I have tried buscopan and that was the main medication what helped me the most, however at the moment my pain has got worse and my spasms are more frequent so buscopan isn't helping much. I have noticed that my pain and symptoms flare up when I'm stressed, but I'm starting university soon so want to get all this sorted before I have added stress which may make my problems worse.

I tried the roadmap diet for a couple of weeks and did notice that certain things such as crisp, bread and biscuits flared my symptoms up so I try and stay away from them as much as I can, and I limit the amount of wheat I eat as that seemed to be causing a problem for me.

If your pain and spasms are worse, try Nurofen along with Buscopan which really helps me if I have a bad flare up.
