Hemorrhoidectomy

I have a big extrenal thrombosed hemorrhoid (size of a grape)I would say grade 3 or 4. Tried everything that is usually recommended and also every treatment my GP prescribed, nothing’s worked. I went to a&e and had it lanced but it did nothing at all. I am seeing a colorectal specialist later this week for a first consultation, I’m an NHS patient but it’s in a private clinic (referred by my GP). This problem is really affecting me not just physically but emotionally, mainly as I haven’t been able to have sex with my partner due to embarrassment and he is wondering why but I cannot tell him, I worry he will leave if I don’t get this problem fixed ASAP. I am really hoping to be offered surgery, ideally hemorrhoidectomy as I can’t see any other treatment working. My question is this: is it likely they will offer me surgery and how long will I wait between my first consultation and the surgery if I am offered it? How long did you wait? Thank you

Alizee....how long have you had yours?  I developed two ETH in late January.  One bled by itself and healed in three weeks. The other is still around after 4 months!  I have seen my PCP once and colo rectal doc twice.  They said no surgery as second hem is very small and resolving.  I STILL have issues sitting for long periods of time.  I am trying not to think about it but it is hard not to.  It is bettter than before but after four months this should be gone!

Hi Jimmy I’ve had mine for weeks and they tried everything, no sign of improvement. I’m going to beg the colorectal specialist for an op as I cannot stay like this any longer. My biggest issue is the fact I cannot be intimate with my partner and if I don’t get this problem fixed ASAP I will lose him.

Go ahead and be straight up with your partner because surgery is very painful and it's almost impossible to sit down for several days.

I do not live it here my partner so I have the option to not see him for a week or two until most of the post operative pain has gone. How long did you wait to have sex again after surgery?

I had four internal and two external removed in October last year. For BM I was given lactulose and fybogel and pain I was given paracetamol and dihydrocodeine. I did not have much pain and only took paracetamol. The first BM was painful as you do not know what to expect but I had a shower after it, then changed it to sitting in a hot bath which helped. You have some leakage so wore pads. I took small walks and built this up.

I was sick after the operation so had to stay in hospital over night.

I read what people were saying before my operation and was dreading the operation but I would still do it again.

I have bran flakes with either raspberries or blackberries for breakfast and drink lots of water this helps BM.

My operation was in the UK.

Hi Mary thank you for your message and helpful tips. I hope you are all better now. Did you have to wait long between your first colorectal appointment and actual surgery? Thank you x

Hi I had to wait 15 weeks. Also for my first appointment after going to the doctor about 8 weeks. The waiting time for appointments in UK is ridiculous.
