Hemorrhoids. how long before doctor referred you?

Posted , 9 users are following.

I was wondering how long you all suffered before the doctors referred you. To a specialist or for surgery?

Ive been suffering with an external prolapsed hemorrhoid for two weeks now. Im in agony all day and the pain wakes me up at night.

due to other health conditions i need my sleep and no stress as it makes it worse. So i feel at the minute that i cant cope.

ive been to the doctor three times but they said they wouldnt even consider the next option until its been "months and months"

ive been given anusol cream and suppository.

I was just wondering what other peoples experiences were

thank you

I was given suppositories when I went to see my original doctor. 3 months later with no improvement, I saw a different doctor and was more honest about the symptoms, blood etc and she didn't even take a look, just said she was referring me to the hospital. I suppose the more blood you are losing the more likely you are to get a referral, otherwise its probably self medicate until it gets that bad as it doesn't ever seem to get 'better'

Hi Gemma I was back and forth to doctors for 3 months then I requested to see a female doctor. She was amazing...I too was brutally honest explaining the severity of the pain, sleepless nights, blood loss, relationship strain with my partner ....she referred me that day. I had a phone call for an appointment the following week and was operated on 6 weeks later. Keep persisting as it really is horrible! ! Wishing you lots of luck x

    Hi Gemma,

I had internal haemorrhoids for 20 years - they just got worse over time. Mine never bled but I was in agony. I saw tried to treat them myself using stuff from the chemist. I saw different doctors but I think because they didn't bleed, they didn't take me seriously. The last doctor I saw was very sarcastic and said she couldn;t refer me for something she couldn't see. They finally became infected and she did refer me. I don't think many GP's like dealing with them. However when I saw the consultant he was very sympathetic and I had the HALO operation which just proves there was something there to operate on. Recovering from the op was awful but it's been 8 months now and I'm fine, glad I had it done and best of all pain free. I would suggest you ask for a referral - say it's interfering withyour life, you could even say it's started bleeding to try to get the referral. Once you get to see the people who deal with this, not just a GP, they will sort you out.Good luck.

Hi Gemma, I have suffered for many years with external and internal, I have one external that i have had for the last 3 years.  It bleeds often, but my GP said that it will have to be alot worse to refer me.  I have a high fibre diet and drink plenty of fluid which helps.  Going the loo is sometimes painful, other times not as, but i always if possible of course have a hot shower, and use hot as possible water from the shower to shower the painful area, that also helps me.  I have sort of got used to it now, I have bad periods of time, and good periods.  It has not get any worse since my last GP visit 18 months ago, so i have not pursed it, I have read many horror stories on how people have suffered when having surgery, a friend of mine had surgery on an external one and it affected his phincter muscle, so now he leaks, and has to wear a pad.  That does not say that everyone has problems following surgery.  Try high fibre, plenty of fluids, hot water on the affected area to relieve the pain.  Pursue the GP though if you are really struggling, don't just suffer, hope it gets better soon.

Put it this way if I had to have another operation I would I was scared after reading what ppl was saying but believe me I'm scarred of those kinds of things but had the operation twice now only downfall is I've been left with a small skin tag yes it took over 2 years for them to operate but my blood loss was severe I needed transfusion x

The thought of an operation scares me but the thought of been in this much pain everday scares me more.

At the doctors in the morning for a routine medication review and im just going to have to be brave and ask for a referral

I went back to the doctors and asked for a referral but the doctor said he wanted to examine me first as he was concerned about the amount of pain i was in. He then said it wasnt external hemorrhoids and was fleshy skin tags that were infected.

he gave me a prescription and sent me on my way. But now im so confused why one doctor said its hemorrhoids another said skin tags.

all i know is im in alot of pain amd want them gone

Ive now had two doctors say they are skin tags and two say they are hemorrhoids. They are large an extremely painful. The one doctor said the skin tags were painful due to sn infection but now nearing the end of the antibiotics they are still very painful
