Hi about to try a little experiment on lichen planus and lichen sclorosis

I have lichen sclorosis and lichen planus of the vulva. I have had this for about 14 years. Dermovate is not the best control medication although it is just about all there is. My symptoms are at present full blown. My dermatologist is thinking oral steroids..I am not thinking that way at all. I have had a look at the 48 hour fast idea which is thought to reset the immune system. You have to do this one twice a year. I am going to give this a shot in September so anyone who wants to join me on this give me a shout cause I could do with the support. Also there is a new study on tumeric and oral lichen planus(mucus membranes) Apparently in clinical trials the oral lichen planus cleared in 6 weeks using a topical turmeric ointment which was specially prepared. However the intment did make the patients very sore during the 6 week process.  If the fasting does not work then I guess it is to the kitchen for me with a lot of tumeric root. You can find all of this on this net just put in 48 hour fast resets the immune system or tumeric heals oral lichen planus. We can but try, hope, and try again..maybe this can work.

Back from the hospital. Right..the new oral is an immune suppressant. No I am not to have it. First reason is my thyroid levels are off..but the second reason is that I am looking not too bad..at all. The is a really significant difference between 2 weeks ago and now..and I have to put that down to the manuka honey..it cleared the sores/ulcers fast. I saw myself on camera and could not see any white bits..I am very red though. Both of my doctors were pleased although I was warned to be careful as manuka is a sugar so there is a danger of thrush...so now its dermovate at night and honey in the morning..the fast yet to come..there is a plan...

That is good news Sky, I am not sure I could cope with wasps wandering around my nether regions - lots of explanations to friends and passers by!

Do you dilute the honey so that it isnt so sticky?

Did the medics comment on fasting?

I imagine we want a healthy non destructive immune system not a destroyed/ suppressed immune system

Thank you for keeping us informed

Hi Suedm..no dilution needed as the honey breaks down and becomes just like normal secretions in about half an hour. When I first put it on it caused a very warm sensation..this wore off on the third day. Got the idea from a case study in which a patient had to have radical vulval surgury and the sugeon ordered honey on the wound..the speed of the healing was notable. That is on the internet somewhere

Did not ask about the fasting..what I was told was that if your thyroid goes out it causes changes on a deep cellular level..then it got a bit highbrow. But they a pretty sure that is why I have had such a problem with the lichen.Because I was absorbed in understanding the thyroid issue and asking on atlernate meds I forgot about the fasting bit which I have every intention of doing as my regular doctor cannot see anyway it could hurt.

    thanks sky.

glad you're ok....do you have reddish patches you were saying?

Hi Marey..the whole area is fairly red..I mean a sort of angry red ..yet this is better than I thought it would be..There is nothing raw...nor did I see white patches and I was watching the screen closely. The patch that dermovate did very little to has also lost its swelling...although still itchy..

no white patches is very good news.

anyone got theory on the manifestation of white patches?

In psoriasis the scales are 'cheap cells' – the skin is regenerating seven times as fast as normal skin. They pile up so thinck that they overheat the layer below, causing itching.

To me the white patch looks like the waterlogged skin of a corpse in murder mystery shows. I joined one of the LS Facebook groups and looked at some of the archived photos members submitted. There was one poor soul who had multiple square feet of white skin and it was wrinkling like wet paper.

I have had the same white patch on one side of my perineum forever. I've had it go pink several times over this year I've been using Dermovate. When it's pink, it doesn't tear. The more white it is, the more likely to tear.

So, my theory is it's dead cells. Kind of like a blister, but on a much smaller scale, like one cell at a time, so it doesn't just peel off.

That's too good a question, Marey, not to start a new discussion, so I'll paste it in one now.

    Hi

I've erupted in LS and Erosive LP in my mouth during the past year. Mouth very sore, vulva OK at the moment after lots of Clob Prop. LP now in the groin skin folds and split backside (can't see whether it is LP or LS causing this). I am using Aloe Vera and Tea Tree mouthwashes. I have put myself on a diet to equalise the amount of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids in my diet because I found some arguments that this could cause unusual auto-immune problems, but my diet wasn't especially bad in Omega 6 anyway. Nothing is curing the conditions which are slowly getting worse. Maybe these actions are stopping it getting much much worse much faster though.

I cannot seem to get my dentist and GP coordinated on this, I feel sure that one thing has started causing all of this. Any ideas on what sort of specialist I should ask to be referred to? Is it something to do with the endocrine system?

I will hunt out what you say about the fasting regime and turmeric (this is a known anti-inflammatory)

I saw a dental specialist for my gum problems if that is any help. Your dentist or GP should be able to refer you on. The dental specialist could say whether it was LS or my Crohns  and he said neither. He did recommend treatment though. I was prescribed a gel to apply to the gums.

I was seen by an oral maxilla facial surgeon because they focus on all areas of the mouth. I am in Australia.

      Hi Kathleen

      I am in the UK.

I'm a bit concerned about any actions to boost the immune system (fasting) because both LS and ELP seem to be possibly caused by an overactive immune system. On the other hand, if they are caused by defects in the immune system then I suppose re-booting the whole immune system through fasting might be a worthwhile thing to do.

Nah I don't think so. Just had imposed fasting with Crohns and colonoscopy. I just eat a well balanced diet from a dietician who knows my health issues. I just juggle everything which includes working on rehabilitation after shoulder surgery, Crohns, diabetes, LS, arthritis, stuffed knees......LOL! Think that is the list of main ones!
