my leg is still swollen and I don't seem to be able to see what to do.  My ankle is causing as much trouble as my knee.  If I walk to the toilet and around the room then sit on the edge of the bed the swelling carries on into my toes.  I am icing, resting doing some excersises.  But daren't do too much and overdo it yet the swelling isn't any easier.  Do you find the knee is very very tight and I feel my lower leg and ankle has prickly heat.   Thanks.    X

Yes to all of it!  My foot was huge, and very painful to put to the floor for about ten days . the bottom half of my leg was swoollen and stiff, and the knee itself very tight. . felt as if a strong elastic band was around it.  My feet also felt as if they were bandaged, so much so that in the hospital I actually kept looking at them!  You are at the worst stage.  .it's horrible. . pain, tiredness, no sleep, no appetite . . but it will get better.  a few more weeks, and you'll begin to feel easier.  it takes time!

Another tip I was given by a fellow tkr-ite is to drink tonic water as the quinine helps to relax the muscles I'll be glad when I can have a vodka with it as well as the ice and slice

Sounds as if you have been overdoing it and not keeping your leg elevated for lonf enough - 40 minutes and you should see a difference - also keep on drinking to avoid fluid retention - of course as you can see - all this is normal but there are things we can do to help ourselves - ice is really good for the tightness and so is rubbing with bio-oil once your wound is totally healed. It is VERY early days and takes a good few weeks - to settle - keep on top of the pain as much as you can x

All normal. U R early on. Pain will continue (take pain meds). Swelling

will be there ( elevate and ice). Excercise as instructed (ice and elevate after). Sleeping will be tuff at night-many naps. Swelling and stiffness are all normal.

I am 9 weeks bilateral post op. Still have slight swelling, stiffness that comes and goes. It depends what and how much I excercise and work. Have all types of nerve regeneration sensations.

    For a week, u r on course.

This is normal but call your doc if  it doesn't get better within days and ask for antiiflamatories, these do help considerably.

I also had to have water tabs for a week...then a renal blood test which I still have to get the results.  Elevate the leg, this must be higher than your hip according to my physio.. put a couple of pillows at the bottom of your bed, and even a pillow lengthwise for you leg to rest one. This helped me in the first weeks at home.   You can groan and grumble on here, we can all commiserate as we have been there, done or doing it at the moment.
