Hi to my old hippie friends

Just wanted to say hi to all of my old hippie friends & to catch up on how you are all doing.

I still touch base on the forum now & again but generally my life has returned to normal (9 months post-op) & I'm as busy as ever at work.

I am so thankful that my op has been a complete success with a fantastic recovery & i often forget I've even had a THR (it still seems quite surreal)!

My surgeon did say that I would eventually have to have my other hip replaced but I should be OK for a few years. Lo & behold I've been getting an occasional twinge (more so if I've been out walking for a good few miles with my dog) & I'm beginning to wonder if I'll last a few more years! I'm not really in any pain & don't have to take any pain relief but I know what's coming! One thing's for sure, I won't delay the inevitable for 2 years like last time!

Anyway, all good at my end. Hope you are all well, big hugs to you all xxx

Hi Fernlady, good to hear that you're doing so well. Actually I'm a bit behind you, middle of July. I too get the odd unmistakable twinge in my other hip, but on the latest x-ray it all looked ok, so we'll see! Wishing you all the best!

Hi Judith, I'll be having my 12 month checkup soon & I'm sure my surgeon said I'd have an x-ray as well so the proof will be in the pudding! I remember how i felt this time last year & how scared i was. Reading some of the new posts brings it all back doesn't it but we have come such a long way x

Hi Fernlady, I find it surprising that hospitals vary so much even in the UK. I had an x-ray at 7 weeks, and then at about 7 months, and then I was discharged. I think it's good that you'll get another check at 1 year.

You're right, it's hard now to remember the early days of recovery, and reading the posts does bring it all back. When I look at my x-ray, I find it hard to believe that all that stuff is inside me!

Aloha! So great to see a familiar name here. Happy to see you are recovering well - this will give everyone so much hope, Fernlady!

Son is past the one-year mark on first, LTHR, 9 months on second, RTHR. I'll post my question that he has, separately.

Hi Soos, good to hear your son is OK & best wishes to you both x

Thank you so much Fern, he has been frustrated with the pace of recovery! But we seem to have survived much of it! Best to you!

    hi fernlady,

good to see you here again and how well you are doing !!!!

not to scare you but I did not even know that my other hip needed surgery until the xray taken at 6 weeks post-op follow up visit showed the almost bone-on-bone of left hip ... was just mild OA 6 months prior ...

    Have a great summer, darling

    Hey Fern

Its your old buddy Laura. It was nice to see a familiar friend on here. I am much the same l have not been on the forum for a long time and when l have l have been looking at diffrent forums. It is a year past now l had both hips done and l have to be honest and say l forget l have had them done as l get no issues from them at all. My luck or lack of it is that it moved to my knees. So l had l knee done in august last year and then decided to take a break before l got other done as it was not quite as bad as my 1st one. I can't say the same about my knee as l can about my hips. Although it has took the OA pain away it is still very tendor and l can't neel on it at all leavinh me one knee that l use more than the other. But again another bit of bad luck was l developed severe pain in my ankle. It was the same ankle l had both hip and knee replaced and pur it fown to pain coning from my knee replecement. But it did'nt ease at all it just got worse so xrays revealed l had OA in my ankle to and needed surgery on it as quick as possible as my bones were grinding together making them really thin and it could have broke at anytime. So Fern l had an ankle fusion done on wednesday and am currently housebound again in a cast that goes from my knee to my toes. The op was a doddle compaired to my knee but l seen the physio thevmorning after to show me how to use my crutches. Again l hit a barrier as the leg l am using to take all my weight is the one needed the knee replacedf. I felt really weak this time and l couod not use tge crutches as l was niot strong enough to hop on the other leg and l was falling iver them. So l ended up coming home with a zimner a set of crutches. I have to say out of the 3 ops this has been the hsrdest to get about. I cried for 3 days aa even going from couch to toilet is a big huge deal. I thought how am l ever gonna shower as l was to weak to even stand for more than a few minures. So l never took it well at all. At least when l got home with my hips replaced and my knee l coukd walk about with my sticks no problem plus l never had a huge cast on and l have to be non weight bearing fir 15 weeks........which l already think l have broke the rule as l have already put it on ground a few times ro get my balace. I had to shake myself out the deoression as crying everyday gonna help. I lost my appetite and was getting so frustrated and angry but thabkfully l have some strenth now l can walk with my crutches and have had showers. So l go back to hosital moday to see a specialist to see if they can get to bottom of why my bottom half is like the terminator. Not sure what thet will do....run more tests ect. And the l gi back on wed to hopefully get cast off and moonboot out on. I pray its that and not another cast. So at the moment l am a bit stit crazy and will be stuck at home for a good 12 weeks.

I was back at work to 3 days a week and gained all my confidence back now l am off again 😕.

I am in ok spirits now just waiting on wednesday in hope this big clumo gets raken off.

But thats me Fern usual bad luck but ar least l can still smile as l know there is peoole a lot worse than me!

Dont be scared to get your other hip done hun as both my hips are great and tbh l would have rather had my hip replaced other than this ankle fusion and it was a tiny compaired to this hip replacement.

Nice ti hear from you again

Laura, Laura, Laura - where to start with you. You sure don't do things by halves do you! I wish i lived nearer so i could come & visit, you must be well & truly naffed off by now. If you need any support you know where we are - all here for each other lovely x

How is your mum doing? Hope your hubby is fully recovered now as well - i bet he's been an absolute rock for you. My husband has told me i can't have my other hip done until the world cup next year! Conveniently, the Euros started the day i came out of hospital last year & he had 3 weeks off to 'look after me'!!

      Hey lovely Renee

Its totally fine Renee when l do things l dont do them by halves. I knew when l started getting pain in my ankle it was gonne be OA l just had a feelung. Well least l have had operation nowm i got a call yesterday from a specialist who want to see me on monday and run some tests to see if they can get to the bottom of me getting arthritis in every joint in my nottom half. Can only give him a try although not holding out much hope. It a bit late seeing that l have already had most joints replaced.

Nice to hear from you again Renee and to see that some of my old mates are still here. 9p

Hopefully l.will get this big clumpy cast on wednesday as its driving me indaun renee.

      Hope you are weĺl hun

      Love

Ha ha your husband sound like mine football is his thing l dont bother with it but he likes it so l just leave him to it.

Aww Ferm he has been an absolute rock he is always there to help me when l.was really low around my ankle surgery he went out and bought me not just 1 but 3 desiner bags as the one l.was using he bought me a few years ago and l had used it to death. I am not a materialistic woman and l cried as l have never had so much money spent on bags for me. I could never spend any more than £30 to £50 on a bag but he goes and buys me 3 that are worth a lot of money. He said you deserve some happiness as you are missing out on holidays and so much stuff since you got arthritis. He is my rock and is so good to me. I feel so low sometimes that l think he could have such a better life without me l am justva burden. But he hates when l talk like that.

Anyway enough doom and gloom there are people worse than me..

My mums fine Fern she beat it and is geting better by the day. So thats one less worry.

Remember when l got my 2nd thr it was so much easier and quicker to recover. It was like my leg new what was happening and l could move it right away

I am hoping my other knee is much easier than the 1st as it was my biggest op out the 3. The pain was the worst and l will aways feel.its a fake knee even though there is not any pain its tendor to touch.

I was really naffed of Fern but l have came to terms with the fact arthritis is a huge part of my life now l just need to adjust to suit it and l always think come on Laura there is people worse than me.

Its lovely to hear from you ane Renee again we were a great bunch and it got me through a lot of hard times.

Hope you are doing ok. Would be good if we all stayed close but unfortunatly thats what forum is about bringing us all together which it did..

      Hopefully speak soon

      Love

      Laura xx

      Dear Laura

Did you ever hear back about the rest of the osteoarthritis from the specialist?

      You are a fighter, lady.

      Praying for you,

      Soos
