Yes!! I have had hiatus hernia for the last year and when

I get this horrible heartburn I get pain in my chest and back

and sometimes in my arms. I also get palpitations which is

really scary. I sometimes think I am having a heart attack.

My heart also races especially at night and can feel really sick

and ill and sometimes sweat or can feel shivery. I sometimes

get breathless. I have been told the palpitations and the racing of the

heart is caused by the vagus nerve which gets irritated

    during attacks.

I was taking Lansoprazole but stopped taking it as it did not

help me and caused my blood pressure to rise. I now just have

    Gaviscon.

Its strange as I can go weeks with no heartburn or maybe only

slight attacks but then it comes back really bad and I cannot work out what

sets it off. I eat Rice cakes (Plain) which absorbs the acid and does

help and believe it or not but eating a pickled onion can help : )

I do find that having a warm bath or shower helps as think it helps

to relax you as I think you can panic and tense up your muscles which

    makes it feel worse.

    Hope you feel better soon.

These long term discussions are really interesting - most of the threads go for some years, like this one, yet Medical knowledge on the issue ie.Treatment at the hands of the Allopathic system, are no closer to actually understanding the causes.

I have had an HH for many years, being 63 now, and it has certainly caused many problems for me - well documented in this thread!

However, 9 years ago, my whole life changed - I had 100/200 Bp, and went to hospital with a suspected SVT. Got that calmed down, and was let out 5 hours later, after having various blood tests. Cause - the system said a possible Viral infection. For the years since, I have low blood pressure every day, bad at night, less so once I am up and at it.

The 2 Heart specialists I saw later, all agreed it was Probably a viral infection..........no real clue.

Okay - what are my points?

The Allopathic medical system is strained in all countries -  The Doctors are trained to treat the illness, not the causes, so do not expect any further interest or time to be put into you and your faithful problem.

Very few of them are involved in any ongoing research in any area of human health problems.

Many times, I have received astute opinion and advice from technicians doing stress test or Ultrasounds, who see so many of our problems under their observation, and to me, know more holistically than the overworked Drs.

Us humans, and of course, our animals, have been eating processed food for some 80 years - where now, anything in a can, package, box etc, is a non food - carbs and some protein yes, active elements like Enzymes, vitamins, mineral, and amino acids - no!

Ever wondered why our 1st world cancer rates have risen from 1 in a 100, to 1 in 2/3, and the same in our pets.

I never realised that I was allergic to gluten, until recently - stopping it, stops my bloating and acidic rising heat in my stomach.

So many of us have allergies that we are not really aware of.......especially the masked ones, which we can tolerate until they overwhelm our body defenses.

I read a book - Diet Wise by Dr Keith Scott Mumby - many of you would have seen his online material - this was a complete eye opener, and would help many of you also, understanding what the food we eat is doing to us!

Now, I have suffered from low blood pressure, when taking a leak at night - I get back to bed with my heart racing around 180, even just fluttering sometimes, and I take a half Diazapam and an aspirin, deep breath and meditate by counting to relax, and let this pass, which can take 15 mins - never knowing if the old ticker will just give up!

But what I have also noticed, is that on nights when I eat late, I have acid still in my stomach when I wake up for the nightly leak - this is when the speeding heart strikes hard!  I also have reasonable nights, if I finish eating before 7pm, don't have too much to eat, and have a fairly empty stomach when retiring.

Also, sodium bicarb has been my most effective excess acid stopper. I have been on Lanzopronol in the past, for 10 years, but gave it away when I found out how bad these H2 suppressors are for us - you need acid in your stomach to digest your food - and if there is any real nutrient content in what you eat, this will not be pulled into your system - it simply goes out backwards....so your body gets too little nutriment over time.

In conclusion - it's really hard to find well qualified specialists who know more than one discipline - eg. Heart/Circulatory, Liver, Kidney, bowel, lungs etc - to understand what we all suffer from takes a specialist in Heart, Nervous System, Easophagus, and even then if they themselves do not suffer this condition, they will not understand how it Really effects us - bear in mind that many Psychologists are actually people with some kind of mental condition that they wanted to get on top of and understand - thereby being really good at helping people with similar conditions.( I know 3 personally).

I will be investigating Stem cell therapy in the future to see if there is any possibility of correcting the problems I have - that the system has got no idea about!

Mind you, if we call the allopathic system - big pharma, then to be brutally honest, the other one - the "Natural"system, I would call Mucho Charlatan".........many Clickbank products with Affiliates spruiking them everywhere - many company's producing efficacious substances quaranteed to get rid of......?

    Cheers all

I haven't been diagnosed but this year has been horrible. I had a cold in January and coughed my lungs up for a month. That was when I first started feeling like I couldn't take a full breath. It was on and off, then got pretty bad at Easter to the point I thought I was dying (as you do!) and the palpitations became quite bad. I've had ecg, still waiting on results after two weeks - love the NHS sometimes - but I'm pretty sure it's HH. I feel better when I'm doing things, or going for long walk, no problem. But sit down with a glass of water and suddenly I'm wondering if my next breath will be my last. Eep.

So, after realising this condition won't kill me and that I'm unlikely to get help from my GP, I've done a little research into the causes of hiatal hernias and what, other than surgery, can help.

As I understand it, hernias are the result of low collagen and elastin, the connective tissues degrades and can't hold the stomach away from the esophagus. It can be repaired by boosting the silica back up. I'm still looking into therapies that might do that, ie boosting whole food vitamin C (NOT ascorbic acid), maybe something like bone broth. I also might look into a chiropractor that can physically manipulate the stomach back into place.

Just don't ever feel hopeless over it, if the doctors give you no joy then there's still many things to try.

I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia March 23,2018 by my GI Doctor he did a Endoscopy. Last Monday May,14,2018 I have my barium swallow they didn’t see my hiatal hernia for I assume it’s a sliding hernia I guess, Which it come and goes. I’ve been suffering with chest pain, dizziness, headache, hoarseness, feeling like there a lump in my throat, difficulty swallowing, for almost a month now. I have my result now in my barium swallow test that I have antral gastritis, and a nonspecific esophageal motility, and esophageal fold thickening with reflux eaophogitis. I’ll be going to see my GI Doctor this afternoon MAY 16,2018. Hoping that he can give me a antibitibotic or meds. THANK you very much for listening to me. JUST HANG IN THERE WILL GET THROUGH ALL THIS. GOD IS GREAT??🙏🏻

i used to get terrible coughs before I got treatment for the HH. It's the big symptom most doctors miss. I was treated for asthma for 8 years before a heart specialist (due to ongoing heart palpitations) correctly diagnosed the cause of it all!

    Dear crazymama,

That is kinda tje way some doctors make you feel.... like a “ crazy mama” when you discuss the palpitations that go along with a hiatal hernia for a lot of people! I have had the hernia for over 20 years and have had every heart test known to man!  It is extremely annoying and sometimes scary. Basically , I just want these symptoms to stop!  There is nothing wrong with my 75 year old heart.... thank God.... but the palpitations persist. For me, they are definetely a result of gas and bloating. But the doctor doesn't agree. Well, I don’t agree with him because I know my body and I know the experience. So I take a lot of GasX and an extra beta blocker when the palpitations are worse. I also take Nexium when I need it. I was taking a probiotic which seemed to help. I believe I am going to start taking that again.  I try not to stuff myself too full and I also avoid caffiene and carbonated drinks. It seems to run in cycles but I’m not sure why. I have had episodes that last 3-4 weeks, then go away for months. That makes it hard to evaluate what triggers these episodes.

So, thats my story and I hope it helps in some way.

    All the best,

    Jeannie

Yeah I've had the racing heart, palpitations, my worst symptom is the breathlessness. I've learned not to get anxious over it because a) it isn't a heart attack and b) it's not going to kill me. Get your next doctor to refer you for an endoscope and/or barium swallow to confirm hiatal hernia, then you'll know that while you have horrible symptoms it's nothing life threatening.

I've come across some good youtube videos on how to massage a hiatal hernia (ie the stomach) back into position. One by a guy called Highrolla1969 explains what he did and another of his vids explains what's happening in our bodies when HH occurs. They did help me and reassured me that what I was experiencing was normal for HH. And that there was something I can do for myself to help myself.

So I too experience these episodes from time to time. Recently they began to happen almost constantly. I knew it was my digestive system triggering them not my heart. Heart doc put me on a beta blocker and was talking about ablation. Instead I went to a gastro who did an endoscopy. He found plenty of inflamation and early signs of Barrett’s, which is not good. FYI, I also have a HH and celiac, which was diagnosed 7 years ago. I’m 55. I’m certain the 48 years of undiagnosed celiac did a number on my digestive system. Anyhow, gastro put me pantoprazole 40mg. The twitching feeling in my chest which usually presaged my heart palpitations/racing went away almost immediately. But occasionally I would still get a sudden very bloated feeling and an episode, especially if I did anything that involved deep breaths, such as talking while on the treadmill or having to talk loudly in a party/bar situation. But it also happened at times when I just bent over to pick something up, or twisted my body while exercising. For years I thought it must be gluten. I’m pretty careful but not neurotic about it especially when I eat out. Still there didn’t seem to be a clear correlation. Then just 2 weeks ago it occurred to me it was something else I was ingesting: dairy. The symptoms of lactose intolerance were exactly those I experienced before any heart episode, especially the bloating, which can occur from 1/2 hour to hours or even more later, followed by cramping. I am only drinking/using lactaso free milk now and avoiding all cheese. I realize now that it isn’t gluten. Every episode has been preceded by decent amounts of cream, milk or cheese consumption at long enough periods after consumption for me not to make the connection. I also now will chew a lactaid pill before I know I may end up eating cheese, like at a party where I know everything else will have gluten. So far so good. You may have allergies/sensitivities to other foods that may trigger your episodes. I totally believe they are related, especially for people with HH, which I am convinced, in many people, is the result of food sensitivities and the ensuing reflux. Anyhow, I know thus is only a recent discovery for me but try going lactose free/using lactaid for a while and see if it helps. The cost is minimal. It may just help. Good luck.

Melanie.... I think it could be a sliding hernia. next time your heart is racing....or you feel weird under the sternum area.... sit down and push down under your sternum with your palm or fingers. Pull down on your stomach. Are you overweight in your stomach? if so, losing some weight by getting off sugar and white food could help. Let me know how you are if you try this maneuver.

One night I woke up with heart palpitations and I went to my cardiologist and they put me on high blood pressure meds right away and it was only because I was afraid, been on a roller coaster since April trying to figure out what's going on either it's my hiatal hernia or mitral valve prolapse but yes I've experienced what you're experiencing and now all of a sudden I get pinching from my breast up and numbness and pinching by my collar bones a lot , I'm trying to find out if anybody else has experienced this with hiatal hernia but yes my gastroenterologist that did my scope said yes you can get palpitations .
