Hiatus Hernia - Breathing Problems.
Posted , 113 users are following.
A few years ago after an Endoscopy I was diagnosed with a small sliding Hiatus Hernia which I have treated with Omeprezole. Recently I have been encountering some breathing difficulties combined with a staggering amount of reflux and despite doubling to 40mg of Omeprezole the reflux and breathing problems continue. I have just had a further Endoscopy which revealed the same Hiatus Hernia and lots of reflux. I am fairly certain that the Hiatus Hernia/Reflux is responsible for my Breathing problems, but doctors seem to disagree although they can not tell me what is causing it.
I have seen a few similar postings to mine, can not sleep, wake up all sweaty, panicy, can not breathe, but no where can I see where a resolution was arrived at?
So, could the breathing problems be down to the Hiatus Hernia and if so how was the problem resolved.
Grateful for any advice.
Regards
Guy Greening.

Guy,
I also have a large hiatal hernia and shortness of breath. Just spent a fortune on a series of tests to rule out pulmonary and heart disorders. Doctors are puzzled. I'm convinced it's the fact that my stomach chooses to live in the thoracic cavity rather than the abdominal. Only thing that makes sense, but doctors keep saying it's very rare and can't be proven. Just wondering after reading what you've experienced, how many others have this phenomenon. Maybe it's not so rare after all

Hi Howard, l believe l have a hiatus hernia. What you describe is remarkably similar to my experience. I have been complaining of being winded after bending over -
then straightening - and also when changing my position from prone to upright followed by a short walk and then return to laying down l also experience unusual heart beats felt quite strongly. I take digoxin so feel that can't have an effect on this.
When l start off walking, my stomach area swells up and my upper abdomen becomes extremely hard and tight when l am fighting to breathe properly. At its worst l feel weak in the legs and hips. I don't think this could be uncommon as many people have these types of hernia. Now l need to tell her what l think - already had an ecg and a holter on. I will be watching the experience of people like you and see how it's being dealt with. I'm finding this very distressing and at age 71 feel my life is over.Kind Regards Carolyn.

Hi Guy,
You're right to pursue answers but I can't say I'm optimistic. I have been asking the professionals why I get breathless for 8 years. They tell me that my chest and heart are fine and that my hiatus hernia is nothing to worry about. My blood and bone marrow have been checked but there is no progress. Now I'm getting the old chestnut that it is simply the aging process. If I just accept aging and do nothing I won't have symptoms. Dying is not exactly recommended but it is a similar proposal. I'll keep fighting and will insist, increasingly, that my hernia should be taken seriously.
Good luck to all.

Have you ever had a breathing test or a cat scan of your lungs. I have both and found I have scaring of the lungs maybe due to the acid reflux.

Hi
i have a 7cm sliding hh with constant breathing problems - air hunger - - cant get a breath- on waiting list for hh repair though worried about that as i already huge bloating issues and gas.
I too have scarring on the lungs caused by acid diagnosed as bronchiectasis .
i have constant stomach pain due to the gas but my main concern is the breathing which is 24/7 to varying degrees
i cant take PPI as they make the bloating worse so was on Ranitidine for years until withdrawn now Famotidine .
Has anyone found anything helps with air hunger ?

Fantastic post. I don't have COPD but do have GERD/HH as yet no breathing probs as such, unless I wake with acid bubbling in my mouth. This sounds so helpful that you have come across, well done for finding it. It will raise hope for those on here who have breathing issues with their HH. So glad Patient have let you post it - I have saved it into a folder.
Thank you once again and really good you are feeling so much better.

I have acid reflux and also a small hiatal hernia. I also have scaring in my lungs which causes me to be short of breath. It was found during a cat can and breathing tests. I urge you to try and do both and hopefully you won't have the scaring but may be able to get help with an inhaler. The doctor to see is a plumonalist . My best wishes you get the help you need.

I am 48, am 128 lbs and 5' 9" (used to be 155lb). I have always been an athlete, play sports and generally healthy. This April starting having breathing issues that hit me like a truck. Prior I had very occasional regurg, like once or twice a year. I ate pretty much whatever I wanted, although I mostly had a very healthy diet. Never had a lot of heartburn and still don't. I have a small hiatal hernia discovered about 5 years ago, which never gave me symptoms. Every doctor says it is still too small to cause problems and GERD (based on a recent Bravo and endoscopy). But I went from 0 to 100 in two weeks this April. Now every day I have symptoms, but some days are better than others, but usually by the end of day is worse. I lost 25 lbs in a matter of weeks and haven't put it back on because I am eating like a bird. Symptoms are bad, breathing difficulties, burping, area under my lower ribs feels like being squeezed like vice and or an expanding balloon, nausea. It is crazy. It is out of nowhere. I am still in the process of trying to figure out if it is the hernia, GERD, or something else.
It is getting worrisome that many doctors seems to think small hiatus hernias don't cause breathing issues. Yet, I am encountering more and more patients with hiatal hernias that are expressing otherwise. And there are a few studies of gut lung connection in regards to acidic vapors. I wish I could help you with retrospect and solution, but I am still in the middle of the problem with no solution. If I do find a solution, I will be back on this board to talk about it. Patient experiences like this make me realize how much the medical community isn't listening. Most are just good at treating known diseases, not discovery.
There is another forum where a person with a small hiatal hernia had surgey and felt better, but there are equal amount of failed surgeries also. So this is hard to figure out. There is a lot of hope if you look for it, but an equal amount of disappointing stories as well that make this an underrated medical problem that isn't getting enough attention from medical research. PPI have limited effect that I can tell unless your symptoms are mild to moderate heartburn.

My Friend
I have the same Problem for years recently it got worse because that is what is happening with a hernia I gets worse over time. The Breathing problems are caused by the bloating that the hernia causes its like you breath against air weird feeling try to put your arms up and stay like this for 10-15 minutes it can help.
