Hibiscrub

This will be a revision hip surgery. Previously I used hibiscrub pre surgery. Is the nhs not giving this now pre op. I've bought some but it says on the instructions let your doctor know if you've used it. My friend who went to a private hospital usedi it so I'm wondering if his is an NHS cutback. Scared to use it before my op now.

I hope someone can help.

    hey

hibiscrub used to be the norm after iodine in nhs i believe and up until the last few years it was always used in equines or farm animals for every day wound cleaning etc but if it's used wrongly it can cause issues.im not suggesting you may use it wrongly but other people may.

it needs to be completely removed from the skin after use which is where iv found it being and issue in the equine industry. its strong ans theres mixed advice to wash it of or leave it on but it can cause reacions.

i csnt see why you cant use it pre op. i was told to just wash really well with soap my grandads first hip he was given hibiscrub but his second he was tiven the same advice as me (his was the day after mine different surgeon)

whej i asked my specialist sugeon about this he basically said washing the whole body is good enough with a good soap twice to three times as they will then lock the entire area but surgical site down and wash in theater.

they also normally put antibacterial antibiotic solution into the site before closing it. i can vouch for thst as is as awake during surgery and the feeling was coming back lol

i would suggest phoning your helpline and ask them but the procedure i took didnt cause any issues. i washed three times with a new cloth over the area and washed the rest of me three times. with just a normal scrunchie thingy.

my grandad couldn't have a shower as he couldn't get in his shower so he only sink washed and again no infections 😃.

can you let us know what you decide? xx

I was given something called the Octenisan Protocol which involved using the special wash every evening for 5 nights and I had to change my bed linen every night and wear freshly washed clothes everyday. Had to use the wash on the morning of the op too. Perhaps ring the hospital to check what the routine is there .

    Best Wishes

I didn't have any recommendations like that on any of my 3 operations ...... they did however swab the leg down with an orange antibacterial / disenfectant solution after I was under anaesthetic.

I had THR 12 weeks ago and I was told to shower as normal on the morning of surgery. I wasn't given hibiscrub.I guess it depends on where you live as to what their procedure is. I am in York, I had no problems post surgery

I had my hip surgery in the USA. I was given a pre-op scrub to use for 3 days. The instructions said that if you are allergic to the pre-op scrub given to you (test by putting a small amount on your wrist), then you can use Dial brand antibiotic liquid soap instead.

    Hi Ali,

I was given an anti bacterial soap at the validation class, told to shower with half the bottle before bed the night before my op. I then had to shower at the hospital with the other half before the op. I never looked at the name just remember it was deep pink.

As with many things it varies from place to place and the surgeons preferences. i understand that they many are of the opinion that a skin washed the morning of operation is clean enough. they always use some antibacterial disinfectant at the start of the op and during after closure. i did not have anything other than a soap and water clean prior to op. no infections

I was just told to have a shower, I had my op on the NHS. I think they may be cutting back, in fact they seem to be cutting back everywhere, we will be lucky to get an actual hip op soon! I had to drink two bottles of some orange stuff before my operation though.

You were lucky ptolemy, being allowed a drink. I was told nothing after 10.00p.m and only a quarter of a glass of water in the morning, I was second on the list at mid-day.

This was some special stuff I had to keep in the fridge, they gave it to me at the pre-op to be taken before the op. I think it was called preOp by Nutricia. Not particular nice but not too unpleasant.

I had my hip replaced in 2016. Had no instructions about washing. I had the orange anti bacterial stuff smeared over like Graham. Check with the hospital maybe.

    All the best, Judith

Thank you all for your quick replies.

I guess it's because the procedures have changed. 8;years ago I was given the scrub now I'm told they're not using it.

Maybe I'm cynical but you hear so much about cuts in the nhs.

Apparently they also used to give the pre op drink at that ptolemey mentioned now they don't.

I had no issues using hibiscrub scrub before but was worried after reading the information leaflet which says to let he doctor know if you'd used it.
