high blood pressure and anxiety

Hi all. I posted a message some months ago regarding my BP, I went to the GP and ended up in hypertension crisis 200/110! My GP made me sit in the surgery for couple of hours and started me on amlodipine, this was fine until I had horrific side effects and ended up unable to walk, after few weeks was diagnosed with severe anxiety and stress so started on citalopram and propananol plus ramapril 5mg, it's been over a year now and I feel really good in myself and happy but have a phobia now of the BP machine, I had my own monitor but my family banned it as it made me worse, really want to visit GP and check it but very scared of Getting a high reading. I have worked so hard to change my life and don't get stressed and do yoga daily, anyone else feel the same? I am 38 yrs old

I hope things have improved for you over the last 10 months. I noticed I had high BP a few years ago but the doctor didn't seem concerned. I am in my 70s. I started monitoring myself and with repeated high readings I was eventually put on amlodipine. This doesn't seem to have any effect. Three nights ago my bp was high enough to be in the red. I took 3 readings but each time it went higher until it read 221 /110. I panicked to say the least.

I now can't stand the sight or the sound of the monitor, and can't even stand the sight of red, the horrible emergency flashing light after a high reading. My doctor still isn't concerned as it went down the next day. I am ignoring my bp for a while just to keep it down! So I now have a new phobia!

I really don't see the point in taking my bp as it gives me bp!

      Hi Nik4nikki,

180/100 is pretty high, but it also depends on situation, if you get stressed, anxious your bp may temporarily spikes like this and then it should calm down when you calm, best is to do couple bp measurements during different times and when you are calm, but if it stays or came up like this for no reason, there is something that need to be checked through couple of cardio tests to see if there is a issue with your heart etc. GP may prescribe bp meds which will help to lower your bp, all the symptoms with your walk and feeling that you will pass out might be related to high bp. I am on bp meds for over 3 years my bp was 190/110 when i was prescribed to bp meds and they do helped me lower my bp to safe levels. I would suggest please do go to see your GP and they will probably suggest a few cardio tests and 24hour bp machine and will decide for correct treatment and meds.

I am having the same issue! Went to GP for heart palpitations...spike to 180/100! I had a full blown attack. Sent to wear holter monitor which showed an occasional extra heartbeat. Went to cardio for follow up--stress test and echo fine! Saw cardiologist and BAM! BP up again. Now I have to self monitor at home and get a 24-hour monitor. My at home readings are all over the place--from 130--150. I'm in a constant state of anxiety over this and I'm afraid the numbers are reflective of my anxiety...I'm really unhinged over this. I am tryinf to relax, but thoughts of another high reading are making me freak out. Help!

    hi.

I have such a phobia of the bp.machine even at home it goes up to 190/83

it has caused me to get resistant hypertension and can cause a horrible crisis for me if i get tested at the doctors office it goes up to 210/90.

i am actually off to see a psychiatrist today so that my anxiety can be controlled.

i am currently taking a high dose of valsartan/amlodipine and atenolol. hope she can control this horrible anxiety.

presently taking .05 clonazepam x daily . was only prn before that.

all the best . will keep all posted.
