My dr. "gave" me a pair when my surgery was over. I assume that one pair is good enough. I would ask if you receive a pair after your operation as they want these on you immediately.

Don't think you need a prescription, I had 3 pair and was told that the ones people use when they go on long flights are the same thing.

I gave away wearing them after about 10 days, by the time I was moving around the house on my crutches I must admit for support.
Second pair given to me by the hospital.

This should be interesting I can't put on normal socks now. I guess whomever is here can help me. I can't bend my leg on that side to be able to put socks on.I think I need a hip replacement hahaha!! The pain is so excruciating when I try to get socks on. I will remember the plastic bag over the foot..is it like a bread wrapper which that makes sense. I will get someone to save some bread wrappers for me. I don't eat any breads at all.Why are we wearing these socks for blood clots to keep them away?

You won't be able to bend to put on pressure stocking or socks afterwards as well, maybe i confused you with previous statement, but I found without breaking the 90degree rules i could adjust them around my knees, which is where they annoyed me the most, kept rolling over and causing me real discomfort. Bread wrapper a great idea.
The whole idea of them is to prevent blood clots in your legs as you are not moving around very much the first couple of weeks.

The are part of the post op treatment to prevent DVT's. I did not have them but injected an anticoagulant into the tummy(fat) daily for 5 weeks. Others have been prescribed oral anticoagulants and some a combination. But that is the Uk

hi angel,
interesting ... I didn't get them but like Maggie (and others) had to self-inject blood thinning medication in belly for 6 weeks to prevent blood cloths ...
Apparently it depends on where you are and protocol of hospital and surgeon ...
where are you in the world?
big warm hug

He didn't say anything about shots in my stomach..and I hope he would have told me about it. He just said I have to wear compression socks and I think he said for 14 days...that should make me miserable lol..from what I am hearing they are horrible.
I am in Waco Texas which is in between Dallas and Austin ...either way is 100 miles from both. Those are wide awake eyes and it is 3am here..

I live in the UK and was given 2 pairs by the hospital. I wore them for a week, and was then told I could wear them just at night, because my knee was swelling above them. (As already suggested, plastic bag over foot first, then pull the bag out.) My husband used to put them on for me, there's no way I could have done it. I wore them for a month during the night.
