Hip Dislocation 8 weeks post op

Posted , 18 users are following.

My left hip replacement recovery was going pretty well until at 8 weeks it dislocated and had to be corrected under general

Anaesthetic. It was an extremely traumatic experience which has left me with sciatica and a complete loss of confidence. I am now wearing a brace for 6 weeks and having as much physio as I can without aggravating the sciatica. We have cancelled our planned holiday and I can't imagine when I might be fit to fly again...Weeks or months seem to be risky... More like a year!

Any one had a similar experience?!

Lindy, I am so sorry this happened to you. I too suffered a dislocation. Fortunately, they were able to perform a reduction. The trauma of the whole experience has caused PTSD. I am not the same person I was prior to this hideous accident.

I have had both my hips replaced, one requing a revision. I still have pain ( groin pain in left) ,(thigh pain in right). I've always had back pain but the hips do make it much worse. I was recently told there is a 40% chance hip replacements don't work like expected. I was also told that if it pops out... it was not done correctly. Drs won't admit that though. It's awful to go through major surgery only to suffer even more after.

    Stay strong!

If you don't mind me asking. What was the revision for?  Was the recovery bad the second time around?

The revision was done because I continued to have pain after 1st THR mostly in the groin area when active. I kept returning to the surgeon complaining and he told me " it only muscle pain; you need to do more stretching". I then sought second opinions. All agreed it should be revised. The surgeon that did the revision told me that when he went in to operate it basically fell right out. He revised it and did some repair work on tendon. The recovery wasn't too bad but I do still suffer w tendon pain. Hope this was helpful.

Thank you for responding back!! Yes this does help! So overall did the revision help you?  I have been having problems with my thigh.  I am 1 year post op. Everything was going great with my left hip replacement til around September.  I have had X-rays and a bone scan.  My surgeon is suspecting some loosening.  I see him on the 15th.  Have no idea what my options will be if any. I just know I can't live like this. Everything was just beginning to get normal again .....I have no idea what i did to cause this.    Sometimes I do have to use my cane again.  Happy you are doing better!

Yes I would have to say overall it's better. I'm curious to hear what options your surgeon gives you. As my surgeon once told me " it's really hard to know whats going on until I get in there". I don't see how you can avoid a revision if your in that much pain. I developed thigh pain on right THR after it dislocated. It's not too bad but I wonder if the dislocation has caused some loosening. Please keep me informed. Praying for you!

Ps. I don't think it's anything you've done to cause this. Hip replacements are not an exact science. In fact I was told there is a 40% failure risk.

    Hi Lindyloudee

soooo sorry to hear it dislocated at 8 weeks. I am just coming up to week 7 and thought surely it won't dislocate now. I will continue to take it easy as it takes longer than we think to be out of the danger period.

I know I sometimes do a bit of a twist at times, in the kitchen is the worst getting food made . I get a little twing ,think it's just a warning . Have my check up in 9 days time ,hope all is ok . Every time I get a tiny twing I worry so much ,I am not surprised you have lost your confidence.

Do you know why it happened ,do you think you breached one of their rules they give us ?

Sure the brace will help. Take it easy and look forward to hear how your progressing as the weeks go on .

    With warm wishes and hug

I too have had a hip dislocation but mine was at two weeks post op. It was trumatic to say the least. They did a revision because mine kept coming out of place in the OR. They placed a longer stem one of the largest they have and my surgeon promised there is no way it will come out again but I have to say I am scared to death to do anything! I am two weeks post op on the revision and I am seriously just taking it easy although my doc said yesterday he wants me to walk more and more... I'm too terrified to do much!!!

My thoughts are with you. I am so thankful that I've found this forum, everyone has been so sweet! It does help to know that your not the only one! Best of wishes, keep us updated!

So sorry this happened to you!! I feel you ! Mine dislocated at 3 weeks. the dr was going to do a closed reduction and try to get hip back in place but couldn't and had to have a total hip revision! Had to go 6 weeks non weight bearing. No type of exercises and couldn't go past 80 hip flexion. I'm almost 4 months out now from that revision. Like you it was a traumatic experience. After surgery I asked my husband if dr had to cut me open and he said yes. I was devastated. Those 6 weeks left me so depressed, discouraged and frustrated. I felt I couldn't go on anymore!! Now I'm full weight bearing but I'm still limping, I was suffering with groin discomfort dr said because I had been non weight bearing I developed tendonitis and bursitis. Not to mention having 2 incisions that were tender. And of course him having to involve the butt muscle the second surgery. The tendonitis and bursitis are treatable and I'm improving there but now the butt muscle is starting to hurt and I always feel like I'm sitting on a rock or even my cellphone when I sit! Sometimes I feel like a band is tight around my whole upper thigh. I'm very tight and stiff. I still can't get to 90 hip flexion. I still get discouraged and cry. Not as much as when I was non weight bearing, I was crying every day!! But I need to be more forgiving of myself and see how God has gotten me this far!! I'm driving, I go out, I'm more mobile. I need to be patient and cherish even the smallest of accomplishments! I wish you all the best and for a speedy recovery! Will keep you in my prayers. Hugs 🤗 LD

I empathize with your situation. Nobody knows the complexity of what us "hippies" go through post op.

I'm post op anterior hip replacement 8 wks. So far the only problem I've had was the 3 week set back from a physical therapy muscle strain. One of the reasons I found a Dr. who does the anterior hip

Is that they have quicker recovery, less chance of dislocation (due to more accurate placement) and

less pain. My emotions have ran the gamut during this recovery because I see people more advanced on recovery than myself and I may be depressed for an hour. Sometimes I have feelings of being physically inadequate with limitations on activities I can do.

My heart goes out to you and your story. I wish you the best and well wishes for normal pain free

mobility. I pray for us all in this "hippie" community.

Take care. By the way, I am 46 yrs old with a dancing injury at age 12 that exacerbated over the years that had to be fixed.

I had anterior hip replacement and 3 weeks later i find out it was dislocated. I was not in that excruciating pain they kept telling us about if you dislocated your hip. As a matter of fact I went a week if not longer with it dislocated!! I guess I'm a rare breed! 😞 Hope all is well with you! 🤓 LD
