Hip displacement

i popped my hip out three days ago.  No one home with me .....tried to move but it was locked and when I moved just a fraction slammed to the floor (was in the bathroom).....hit my head against the tub and realized I had to get thru the pain and try to move to get to a phone.  Went in fraction moves at a time as I had no ability to move entire left side.....besides the awful pain every time I did move.  Took me about an hour to get to phone and call 911.  Two rescue teams came and 4 or 5 medical men came and figured out how to move me.  Got to the emergency room, had X-rays (crying a bit for the pain ). Thank goodness for the emergency room dr. Who very skillfully popped it back.   I'm sure your all wondering what did I do to pop this out?  I am in my 7th mo. And had been doing extremely well but for pain in my thigh. And legs.  Had f.u. Appt. scheduled for May 14th.  Anyway.......I had a cut on my left leg near the ankle.  I went to apply a bandaid reaching over from right to left while standing.  I honestly don't think that that should have popped it because I didn't cross legs or knees.....FYI as I live alone I have decide to order a medical alert necklace as the medical assistants mention to me.  It was a terrifying helpless experience to not be Abe to move, be in excruciating pain and have no phone.

Thanks Kevin!  I am feeling almost 100 per cent.  Need to find out abt the thigh pain.  Right after the hip was put back into place I felt the best than I had for a few weeks.  Think I need to go see the doc and see if the thigh pain is related to the displacement.

Dear Kathryn, I am sorry you have gone through such an ordeal, but luckily are now more prepared in case of an emergency. I have had a RHP done almost 3 mos ago. My dearest friend here in Costa Rica has had two displacements. She had her hip replacement only 7 years, the first one occurred about 3 years out and she was trying to clean her pool and had bent down in an odd manner. She was never given precautions so was not aware of the risks and positions which can cause this. Last year, it happened again, at this time, she was sitting on a low chair painting and it popped out. Both times very painful and she also lives alone, so had to crawl similar to your story. The second time was very hard as the first hospital could not put it back in and so she was sent to another hospital. She has seen a new orthopedic doctor who has reviewed her xrays and says the angle of the prothesis was not put in properly and he suggested a revision/ or putting in new prothesis. Her hip does not feel very stable either. So she is deciding when to do it if she does. So we have spoken alot about displacements and I have seen her go through this first hand. But as you say, after so long you do not think about all the positions you put yourself in. Anyway, your story catches all our attention and reminds us to be extremely careful no matter how long it has been since the surgery. God bless and take care, Susan

Oh how terrifying and ghastly;  but what a relief to have proper help for the re-setting. I can't imagine had it been weekend when theres only skeleton staff, jr drs etc.   I'm sure people n here will find your experience useful.  They say never bend over and twist.  I just saw the chiro for doing my unoperated side in just doing that motion.  I think I will carry my phone on a necklace while at home, or in a kangaroo pouch!  Brava you for being so heroic....

Hope you are feeling much better now Kathryn.  I think this is a lesson to all of us, that we must be forever aware about how we bend and move.  We all tend to do things without thinking, so your post is a good reminder to us not to twist our bodies and make sure we keep straight.  Best wishes to you.

Up until this happened I was pretty confident that my hip was in good shape and I did just abt everything.  Very anxious now.

    Hiya Kathryn

That sounds awful, I was cringing at the thoughts of it, it's good to hear you have come out of it so well, you are made of strong stuff! It also worried me some what, Im hoping to go back and work in construction, I think I'm going to have to get myself up the ladder a bit quicker than I thought and get a job pushing a pen rather than doing the donkey work!

Look after yourself, all the best Steve

Maybe u can persuade them to keep u on the ground.  If the hip pops u will not be able to stand ( or get off the ladder).  The rescue guys were excellent in trying to figure how to move me with as little pain as possible. But I can't imagine how they will get u down and if u fall like I did u might not live thru it!

Hi Kathryn hope you are recovering well from your ordeal and thanks for the warning, I am only 2 months post op and back at work for 1 week but already I am being careless or over confident with certain movements.I am certainly going to think before I move now. Take care xxx
