Hip displacement

i popped my hip out three days ago.  No one home with me .....tried to move but it was locked and when I moved just a fraction slammed to the floor (was in the bathroom).....hit my head against the tub and realized I had to get thru the pain and try to move to get to a phone.  Went in fraction moves at a time as I had no ability to move entire left side.....besides the awful pain every time I did move.  Took me about an hour to get to phone and call 911.  Two rescue teams came and 4 or 5 medical men came and figured out how to move me.  Got to the emergency room, had X-rays (crying a bit for the pain ). Thank goodness for the emergency room dr. Who very skillfully popped it back.   I'm sure your all wondering what did I do to pop this out?  I am in my 7th mo. And had been doing extremely well but for pain in my thigh. And legs.  Had f.u. Appt. scheduled for May 14th.  Anyway.......I had a cut on my left leg near the ankle.  I went to apply a bandaid reaching over from right to left while standing.  I honestly don't think that that should have popped it because I didn't cross legs or knees.....FYI as I live alone I have decide to order a medical alert necklace as the medical assistants mention to me.  It was a terrifying helpless experience to not be Abe to move, be in excruciating pain and have no phone.

Oh Kathryn, so sorry to hear of this....It sounds terrifying!  With just a simple move.  How do your feel now?  Some people think i'm crazy when i talk about not wanting to do certain things anymore....basic things..... this is why..... i dont want to fear my life of course, but this could happen with simple daily moves....  hugs to you. My first stop will be the surgeon who I hope can give me some idea as to the cause of this,  I'm thinking the X-rays may show something.  I believe that they proceed as if I have made a wrong move.....but we'll see....

Hi Kathryn, Poor you that sounds horrendous, I live alone too and try to keep my mobile handy so if anything does happen I can call someone.  I had thigh pain after my THR in the same leg and the surgeon xrayed it and said I now need a knee replacement and booked me in straight away so will be having it done in July.

    Good luck Valerie

Hi Val.  I think we texted abt the thigh pain a while ago.  Mine got progressively worse with constant limping.  Then the hip popped.  Now the only soreness I have is in the groin area that I believe is there from the displacement.  But I'll let u know what the surgeon has to say.  Got a lot of things to consider:  scoliosis, one leg longer than the other, fall that occurred back in dec. ......guess it will take some detection and time.  Good luck with ur knee!  Glad to have a place to vent!

Hi, Yes, I have found if very useful receiving and giving tips and it is helpful to hear of other people with the same problem.  I have found my thigh is much less painful since I have been doing the knee exercises.  Hope yours is sorted out soon.  Valerie x

Kathryn, been there three times in a period of 26 months.  When I am here alone the phone is in my pocket, if I am in the shower the phone is on the chair beside it.

My doc says the muscles probably are not strong enough to keep it in place. (Since the muscles don't show in the Xrays I don't know how he knows this.)  Anyway, he suggested wearing aa brace and exercises such as walking, and bike riding.  I got a second opinion, this doc suggests PT excersises.  My doc says that is NOT a good idea.  Both docs think replacing the liner and head are an option.  I have been given the name of another doc, who I am going to contact.

Kathryn, depending on what doc 3 says, I will probably go ahead and have this surgery, rather then wait for another dislocation.  I am not by nature a pessimist, but enough already!!

I totally sympathize with you. Remain cognizant of bending over, and wear the brace if your doc suggest it, it will not prevent a dislocation but it will keep you aware of your movements. Best of Luck to you.

Have been to the surgeon and he referred me to pt whom I saw today.  Will start a series of exercises to strengthen the muscles.  It's amazing how therapy specialists can vary.  Luckily I got a good one this time.  He showed me some moves to help to prevent the breaking the 90 degree rule.  Keep me posted if u decide to be operated on.  My doc said I needed to get by one year without problem before I can relax.  No brace u less it happens again.  Meantime I need to strengthen those muscles!

OMG how terrifying. That same thing happened to a neighbor of mine, she was home alone, thank God my husband was outside and heard her crying out for help. Her doors where locked so he had to break out a window and climb in to get her help and call 911. This dislocating really scares me and I am so careful not to bend or move in certain ways. I hope I won't have to live in fear of that forever. Having that Medic alert necklace sounds like an outstanding idea even if you con't live alone, most of us are alone at some point during the day and you never knnow. I hope you feel better soon.

The only thing good bat hip dislocation is how great it feels once it's popped back in place.  Am working on my pt now and building those muscles.  Doc said I have to go a year with no dislocation before relaxing restrictions.  So far so good.  Am hoping that this was just a fluke thing.
