I was so worried my op would be cancelled before I had it, I had no time to be scared as I could not have continued as I was. It is nice once it was over though. Just an hour or so for the op and everything will be on the up.

    Hi angel,

I was terrified of having the operation, I had never been in hospital, did not take medication but, the whole proceedure was fine.

I did not feel injections going in spine area, when it was numbed I was put on my side, arm on an arm rest next thing I knew I was being woken up. I had no pain at all after op, no bruising and minimal swelling which mainly came up at night, which is understandable.

So do not worry, I will not say enjoy it but, it is not bad, you have nothing to fear from the op.

Just like I was.....I had my left hip replacement last Wednesday ( 27th)

Nothing for you be frightened of ...I came home on Saturday and not really much pain , some bruising it's only the restrictions that get me down ... particularly trying to sleep on my back..but if that's all I got to complain about things are good ... I'm just looking forward one day at a time to getting my previous quality of life back ....😁

Hi Angel my op is 4 weeks and 6 days away from right hip replacement and I admit to feeling nervous but also strangely excited because I'm so fed up with the pain and how hard its become to do day to day jobs and looking after my children plus my left hip also needs replacing and its becoming more painful cos I've been relying more on it recently! It really helps reading peoples experiences on here hopefully we are looking forward to getting our lives back!

Hi Angel, yes I am waiting for hip surgery. Waited for almost a year so looking forward to having it done. Extremely nervous though. It’s just a fear of the unknown. I will be glad to be pain free. I have found the waiting the worst. Hopefully it’ll be all over for us both very soon. Best wishes.

Hi Angel, I had my hip joint replacement four weeks ago. They wheeled me into the theatre gave me my spinal injection and sedatives, next thing I woke up pain free. They got me out of bed to sit in a bedside chair I found it a bit daunting the first time but was soon up and about. Don't worry, you'll be OK.

Hi hi John that's reassuring. Would love to know if you go totally to sleep with the spinal injection sounds a better option but nervous about seeing and hearing everything!

glad everything went well for you John and you're on the road to recovery x

      Hi Angel

I had a spinal as asked the same questions to my anesethist before I went to theatre ...and the answer is .....I was given an injection before they gave me the spinal, then had spinal , then they gave me something else and I have no idea what went on in theatre, went to sleep... apparently the spinal is better for long term pain control and feeling better after operation....when I woke up in recovery I didn't feel sick and in fact had a cup of tea! ...

You can have sedation with a spinal so you know nothing, or just a mild one when you can listen to music or none at all, which I had, when you hear everything. I wanted to know what was going on! It meant the surgeon could talk to me as well. It did sound a bit like builders next door.

Sounds awful haha listening to all the sawing etc smile but sedation and spinal sounds better than a general mmm food for thought ! Thank you for you story!

Interestingly enough I did not hear sawing as such, it was more an electric drilling feeling and my chest vibrated. It was an interesting experience. After the hip op I had a nasty huge blister and need an op three weeks later. They wanted a general but I asked for a spinal and it was quite interesting as the plastic surgeon was a young guy and it was a good team and we talked about the problems of Catalan in Spain! One of the nurses was Spanish.

Hi Angel I'm 5 weeks post rhr and like other contributors had a spinal block with sedation. I listened to music but cannot remember a thing about it so don't worry. You recover much quicker than with a general anaesthetic and rarely any side effects such as nausea. Take your time with the recovery and if you need pain relief then take it otherwise walking and physio become more difficult. Good luck

Very reassuring to hear about the anaesthetic being better than a general. I was quite worried about not being completely knocked out. I have listened to you all and I feel so much happier. The fact that you’ve not got nausea to put up with is such a benefit. This forum is so helpful. Thanks everyone!
