Hip pain before surgery

Hi everyone. I'm almost 4 weeks post op from a right THR and started physical therapy a week ago. In talking to the therapist about my pain before surgery, which I still have, I was surprised to hear that most patients have pain in the groin area instead of the upper buttocks, like me. I've had 2 spinal fusions and it was my spine doctor that mentioned the arthritis in my hip after my 2nd surgery when I still had so much pain that they couldn't answer for.

Are there any others that have the pain in their lower back/upper buttock area? Or did you have the groin pain? I'm kind of wondering if there's a difference in where the pain radiates from and if that affects healing.

Thanks!

    Hi mumanater,

Do you mean you have the same level of pain as pre op, normally that pain goes after the thr. I have a bit of pain in thr groin aera after walking/exercising a lot. Most of my discomfort, which makes me limp, is from the thigh bone that was drilled and the implant put in.

I,m also in my fourth week post operation and suffered bad groin pain pre operation as well as hip pain. I did a lot of pre operation exercise for a couple of months and post operation from the word go and it's helped my recoverey. I hope everything goes well for you

Well your therapist needs an education doesn't he/she.

My right hip all my pain in my buttock, and the left one, all my pain right in the fold of my groin, had a real struggle to believe the second hip was also coming from the hip joint, but an x-ray confirmed the lack of space between ball of hip and pelvis when they compared it to the x-ray from only a short time previous about 20 weeks, when my right hip was replaced, surgeon said didn't last as long as they expected, but knew it would need replacing in about 2 years, in the end 13 months apart for surgery.

Same for getting well, very gentle exercises, just lots of them, heated pool was brilliant, as not weight bearing, back in pool less than a month after surgery both times, after clearance from local GP, his most concern was that the cut had healed enough not to let in germs.

Will PM you a booklet of exerises exactly the same as I had. just from a hospital in west Australia.

My GP who happens to have most of his units towards ortheopedic surgeon told me about 50/50, which way it affects you, and surgeon said the same.

I hope that this will help I downloaded a useful app Pocket Physio is an app designed by Care UK. It is an easy to use guide for physiotherapy exercises that you can do before and after your orthopaedic surgery.

      Hi John,

I downloaded the pocket physio, it would have helped a lot after my thr. As it is an NHS app you would think the hospital or physio would mention it when they send you home. I had a piece of paper with a few exercises on.

I too experience pain in the upper buttock every now and then.  I am 17 weeks post op and in the beginning it was quite prevalent.  Once I started PT it became worse.  One of the PT's suggested I lie down with a tennis ball in that area and roll slightly around.  I did it a few times and the pain did go away.  It does still come back every now and then and I just do the ball thing.  I had the pain before surgery and just thought it was from the arthritis in my hip.  Wish I had known about the tennis ball.

I had that too. More of a "discomfort" than pain though. I swear I could feel the implant. But it's gone now at 10 weeks. Strengthen those supporting muscles. It helps.

    Hi Mumanater,

Most of my pain was in back, but as the arthritis progressed, I did get increasing groin pain with decreasing lateral mobility. At 3 1/2 months post THR R lateral approach, they have me on tons of butt exercises :-) I think my glute med was particularly weak.

7 days is VERY early!! Of course you have pain and discomfort. Take it easy on yourself. Soldier through your exercises and little by little you will get stronger and stronger. I AM surprised you are doing side leg lifts while standing at this point. I did the bed ones till 4 weeks.

      Good luck.

      Catherine,

I cannot believe they have you lying on your operated side already, did you have the anterior. I was given an exercise to move my leg out to the side but that was from lying on my back, then I had to lift my leg with my hands, as it took a week to be able to move it across the bed.

Also....a little help with bed leg extensions...use pj bottoms with crotch under your foot and holding the legs to HELP your leg along till stronger 😊

I now have pain in their lower back/upper buttock area when I stand, it goes away if I sit (so OK to ride a pushbike for miles). Worst thing is sneezing or coughing if I am standing - again OK if sitting down.

I'm off to see my surgeon on Wednesday.... so we'll see what he says. I am 18 months post revision operation, and 21 months post THR by the way.

So, it turns out I have a trapped nerve in the spine, probably a bulging disc.

At least my hip joints are fine.
