Hi I had swollen and tightness in my knee, I had X-ray and blood tests all came back normal. They said my hamstring too tight so been doing exercises for this, it has definitely improved until yesterday when I knocked it getting out of the car. Got ice pack on today hoping it will improve for tomorrow night.

How is your knee and what advice did your doctors give you

This thread has been very helpful and positive. Had my THR last Monday 29th Dec. I am in a lot of pain at moment but getting there with the analgesia. I am trying to do the simple excersises regular and only assumed that the legs should be raised when sitting as per norm. Feeling I wont yet cope alone without hubby, he goes back to work tomorrow so let's see what tomorrow brings. My leg is very bruised, up like a tree trunk round thigh. No pain in scar/incision area, all below that - prob where pin is down the bone? Was sent home with stockings and told categorically must wear for 6wks, dvt meds for 4 was but no raised seat advise. Wasn't bothered as elderly mum who lives with us had one so using her bathroom. However, even though it's raised I find toileting the most uncomfortable of all regarding pain. Never realised how difficult it would be to pee! It was bad enough prior op getting on off loo but it's hilarious at the moment. Don't know what the neighbours must think with my moaning and shouting! I am hoping my story will be a success but any tips from anyone will help. 58yr female (suffer Fibromyalgia & Growth Hormone a Deficiency but apart from that in decent health, bit overweight!! )

Hi.   I had a right hip replacement four weeks ago, no problems with the scar or hip, but right leg badly swollen and very sore especially in the mornings,  I'm assured that it's normal in 'some' patients, and swollen legs and feet have been known to last several months. I think we are the unlucky ones

I had my right THR done August 30, 2016. I have to admit, at this point,

it is the worst of all my surgeries… how many you ask? Well since 2010,

I have had 5 on my left shoulder, 1 on my right shoulder, 1 on my right hip.

I am expected to have my left hip done in the next year or so.

Prior to 2010, I had my gall bladder removed, my first surgery on my right

Shoulder and both ankle operated on… now about this pitting edema I have

in my right foot. I started cumaden right after surgery, bridged for one day.

when I got home, I started using xeralto and by day 4 at home, my right foot looked

    was 4 times bigger.

Thanks for the taking the time to read this

Thank God to the internet all right be lost. I recently had my left hip replaced 2 weeks ago November 29th. I'm 6-2 so I find it hard to find anything to sit on. Thank you for the suggestions about the feet and the knees I'm getting quite a bit of swelling at times in my knee and then down through my leg over the last day or two quite a bit of pain in my hamstring I think it's due from sitting or at least trying to set hopefully that's what it is some people talked about compression socks I'm going to look into that. I can't do the foot slides. Also back to my hamstring different times when I'm standing I can pull up on my left foot and I don't know if that might be causing the extra discomfort in my left hamstring. Also I don't get to get out to walk much I live on the third floor of an apartment building and with the snowfall we got today . My building is a small unit so there's no hallway for walking. Another thing that might be sent me back is the night before my surgery I went up and down my apartment steps 15 times bringing things in and try to set everything up her after the surgery so I'm probably paying for that right now. Best of luck with everybody for their healing and I look forward to reading more responses. TS 4:30 in the morning one thing I cannot do is sleep at night for more than an hour or two.

5 days post LTHR. A lot of swelling all of a sudden yesterday and DVT found in ER. Can't exercise as I wish. Beginning PT tomorrow. Worried about the clot and the swelling. The elastic stockings are very annoying and the immobilizer too. Can't sleep. Need some courage now.

Hi Maria, I am also at day 5. Don't worry about swelling, it's perfectly normal as you can see from above, but you should do the exercises, even while sitting down you can do ankle raises and buttock squeezes and walking up and down your corridor or even around the room is good. Did they give you painkillers? They help with sleeping, along with soft bedding. Keep hydrated. If you are awake in the night, listen to audiobooks, or the radio until you fall asleep. Keep on keeping on! It will change. Day by da.

    Hi

I hope you are all doing ok. My granny 87years old had a full hip replacement on the 1 December 2016. She is walking and the swelling is going down. But I have noted that her knee and lower leg is turning blue. Any advise

    Thanks in advance

It could be natural bruising and swelling but you should call and check with the nurse or doctor to be safe.

The same happened to me, my hip replaced Dec 7. Went to ER and apparently I had a blood clot in my vein behind the knee. Precribed blood thinners. Don't wait, see a doctor. Best regards.

I broke my phemer head off and had my left hip fused when i was 15.20 years later I just saw the doctor last friday about a hip replacement at the bone and joint specialist office. The 2 orthopedic surgeons want a ct scan done so they can build a 3d image on the computer. The reason for that is they need to build a complete custom hip for me. My next appointment after the ct scan is February 1st.

Hi I am 12 days post right hip replacement. The swelling of thigh increases during the day but reduces overnight. I am wearing compression stockings 24/7 and injecting blood thinner as instructed. Gradually increasing distance walked and checking with Fitbit, yesterday did 3000 steps on crutches as well as wandering about during the day so totalled 7000 steps. Not sure if enough or too much! But the discomfort different from pre op. Sleeping on back better than expected. Overall pleased with progress so far.

I am just two weeks today, experiencing same as you, quite a lot of swelling around the knee, tho bruising  are good with your walking!! I am not so good, but do walk up and down the corridor a lot and do standing exercises. Staples out thenother day wound healing well. Taking arnica.

      Merry Christmas to all!

7000 Steps???  I am post hip 8 days and have gradually built up to around 600 steps per day. But thats paces with only the bad leg. 3500 steps with the fit bit then I guess, since it counts steps with the good leg too. Hee!! I;m in no pain at all when siting and without any pain meds at all. Pain goes to a 6-7 level as soon as I get up in my quad (top thigh area) I get swelling in that same area even with repeated icing. Using walker still for safety, not cane. Thigh measures about 1.5 inches bigger in circ .than the opposite.  I was worried about doing to much ,but sounds like i need to kick it up a notch.  I still can't do any straight leg raising at all, nor can I lift my foot off the ground while sitting. I can extend my knee while sitting. Too weird. any of this sound familiar.  Thanks.

Hi I'm now 6 weeks post op . Progress has been erratic especially day after overdoing it!! But now am walking 10,000-12,0000 per day including half of that dog walking. Only carrying one crutch as a warning now but don't need to. Great progress as can now dress myself including socks!!!! Have dismissed my carer and have been driving for 2 weeks. Occasional discomfort in groin but feeling very positive now and think my aim of returning to competing in dog agility by Easter is achievable. I am sure that my progress is due to being slim  and fit Pre op and doing the Physio obsessionally. I hope this helps!

Thankks for the reply. Sounds like you are doing great. Good medicine for me. Well , I'm old and "fat". (215ish) but was into bike riding about 5 miles several times a week, until this year of course. That went to h----. I'm mostly frustrated at my quad "shutting down". Meaning inability to raise my heel off the ground at all/ straight leg raise with knee locked. He told me maybe 2 full weeks for that to return, but it has not progressed at all. Did you have that issue?

Yes took quite a while to be able to lift foot up but gradually improved and now almost 90to hip ,not meant to do more!!! After sitting for a long period, as when watching tv takes a while to persuade leg to weight bare and limp until message gets through! Otherwise walking often limp free! I found the heel slides difficult for at least 4 weeks. I hope this helps.
