This is such a great forum!  I am 9 days after a Right THR using the anterior approach.  It's good to see that I am not the only one experiencing some of these issues, some of which I am just now feeling and hearing about.  I felt that I was in pretty good shape going in to the surgery, which I am convinced has helped somewhat with the recovery so far.  I was able to walk without crutches or a cane the day after I got home.  Walking longer distances has become easier every day.  There is not significant pain around my hip or the incision, but my thigh and groin (sometimes) feel like they've been hit with a baseball bat.  The best way to describe the pain is like that of a deep bruise.  It hurts a lot! I have some swelling, and wear compresion socks all the time.  It has been good to hear the suggestions of ice and elevation.  I had not heard that before.  It sounds like patience is the best medicine, though.

8 days out today for me. Same anterior approach. No pain meds except occassional tylenol.  Same feeling of thigh hit by a ball bat. Just described it to a friend like this- After siting in a chair for 3 months , go outside and clean up the yard for 8 hours, the next am while your leg is so sore from lactic build up, take 3 half swings with a short 2X4 onto your quad. Now, try to walk a bit... heee!!!  About right? I;m getting swelling of the same quad area.  Ice helps but it come right back after a while of resting.

Hi, I had a THR (left hip) 6 weeks ago, I've been walking without sticks or crutches since two weeks post op and seemed to be recovering well. For the past three days I've had pain in both legs, lower back and my feet have swollen again, the pain is almost as bad as the bone on bone pain I had pre op. Is this normal?

Perhaps you overdid it without realising it. It seems early to be totally without crutches after only two weeks and people get enthusiastic once they can get around easily. But to be sure, tell your physiotherapist and see what he/she has to say.

I'm only 8 days out, but I agree with overuse to soon possibly. Dependent swelling or edema might be causing the discomfort. Elevate legs, Ice the areas that seem more painful especially right after exercise etc. My wife had both knees done years ago , and she said she used the ice elevate for months later to relieve it, sporatically, not pattern she said. Hope that helps.

Just had my Left THR 2 days ago at the age of 32. Experiencing slight swelling and tightness in thigh area. Slight fever right at 100.0. At discharge they told me not to worry with anything unless I have swelling and fever over 100.4... Having concerns already hoping I didn't manage to over do it between being at the hospital and home.

SLight swelling is normal after two days, but pay attention to swelling on the calf.  Why not just give the nurse a call to ask about your temp? It's probably fine but better to err on the side of caution. My leg swelled up a lot and with much bruising, and has taken time to subside. It's a long process and needs patience. Make sure to do exercises. Good luck.

Hello.  I was reading the posts to this discussion group with interest as had a THR a week ago today.  Thank to you all for the sensible advice.  Did anyone have a severe back problem prior to their surgery?  If so, how did you cope with lying flat on your back.  I find that the hardest part of the recovery.  I have degenerative disc disease so have little or no disc between lower vertebrae. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

I had awful pain on the bottom of my back. The night i broke my hip although i was in agony the pain wasnt as bad as the pain on the bottom of my back from lying on a hospital trolley for hours. Anyway i had my partial hip replacement done two weeks ago and pain in back still quite bad. It comes and goes i had xrays but showed nothibg so i have come to the conclusion that ut us because you have to lie on your back for the furst 6 weeks and i always lie on my side. The other thing is i cannot lie and luft my operated leg up from the bed kerping my knee straight but i suppose that will come in timd after the muscles and tendons are repaired.

I think that is pretty normal.  I had the anterior incision and have done marvelously. I'm just 2 months out and am completely normal essentially. No restrictions and can even put my sock on nearly 100%. The residual problem will be crossing your leg to get complete motion when lettting your hip drop outwardly and down as in frogleg position. I could not lift my foot off he bed with my knee straightened for 2-3 weeks. Is happens suddenly. You feel like your paralized with that, then all fo a sudden you can lift it. In another week its normal. Hang in there. You will be walking around the block shortly.

I had my hip replacement and had a lot of swelling/bruising of the leg/knee.  I am thankful the swelling/bruising has reduced dramatically now after 2,5 weeks. I think I am lucky from what I can see from a number of the posts.  I kept to the exercises, medication and advice given to me but also employed the Bowen Technique which was great as it uses gently moves that assisted as well.

    Hang in there.

    Kevin.

I am glad you are doing well! I am now 7 months post second surgery and I still have tremendous pain in my groin, and thigh where the end of my stem is. Also my hip clicks and pops and hurts all the time. I still have a limp, and I am on pain meds… I am holding out for getting free at the 1 year mark…
