Hip replacement April 2016

Hi there fellow hippies I don't know if any of you remember me ? I had a THR on my right hip at the end of April . Prior to the operation I was really fit and training a lot but was in lots of pain afterwards and getting no sleep + plus on strong pain killers .obviously I was nervous before the op but looking back know it is was of the best decisions I've made in my life because since the op I'm 100% pain free . I had the op at the end of April and was back at work on the 8 th of June , also I was back at the gym the day after my 6 week check up and the surgeon told me I could start getting fit again.when I exercise now it feels marvellous and really strong and to see me walk you wouldn't know I've had it done .the only problem I've had is that my sleep is not the best even though I'm pain free , apparently it is common after this op ????. So ANYONE who's having this op soon , don't worry you'll be fine trust me ,just take it easy after the op until you have your 1st check up .All the best Scott 🙂

      Hi Crystal

I think we can all appreciate your fears. I know I was scared before my thr, but it was really of the unknown and all the things that can go wrong.

My fears really were unfounded. I am now five weeks post and getting around well and very little discomfort. It is a massive improvement from before the operation.

Look towards the improvement it is going to provide, in terms of pain relief, mobility etc. From my perspective it was definitely the best option for me. It isn't always easy but it was what I needed.

Hi Crystal not sure where you're up to now but I had my right hip replacement on the 7th November, the day before my birthday! I was very anxious, terrified truthfully 😉I am three weeks post op now and can't believe the difference it has made! I had my staples out last week which was totally pain free, I had dreaded that too! I am an an oldie (71)  so I certainly didn't have youth on my side. I am now getting around on two walking sticks and feeling better every day. Like most of the people on here one of the worst things to cope with is sleeping on your back. I am sure everything will (has) be fine ,just be positive and do your excersises and rest when your body tells you it's tired. Trust them they know what they are doing 😄Good luck

It is good to hear how well you've done Scot. Congratulations.

I am 7 months and not as good as I would have liked but suspect that much of this is due to the 2nd hip which is over-ready to be done.

Re sleep - it was much the same story for me, BUT .... over the last 10 days, I have started to sleep through with only one or two breaks. It feels MAHVELLLOUS ( trying to channel Billy Crystal)!

So ... relief may be ahead soon. But as I start this process over again Tuesday for the 2nd hip I suspect sleep will be at a premium yet again.

Best of luck with your continued recovery and thanks for the update.

You're post was exactly what I needed to hear at this point in time.  My surgery is in 2 1/2 weeks and I doubt that I could be more scared.  I read every post that comes to me and most are very upbeat.  But sometimes I just start thinking of the things that can go wrong.  Also there's the pain, sleeplessness, restrictions, etc. I guess that this is fairly normal but it's soo good to read a post like yours when I'm getting ready to have my surgery.  I do hope that you keep up the updates.  xoxo

I'm reading a lot of different stuff about how long people are away from work after THR or HR. Would people be so kind as to chime in and tell me whch one you had done, and what you do for a iving, and how long you were away? Please?

I stayed out of work just short of 3 months. 10 weeks to be exact. I'm a court reporter and my job requires a lot of sitting without being able to take a break to stand at my convenience so I erred on the side of caution to not encourage blood clots. Also I have to carry a lot of heavy equipment around from court house to court house and carrying, lifting and pulling would out a lot of strain on him hips and gait. Even a sedentary job as mine is had its problems so I took my time until I felt well enough and ready. Sitting for long periods of time without discomfort was a concern.

      What do you do, Jeff?

Hi Jeff, I'm just over 14 weeks post-op & went back to work at week 10 on a phased return. I work for an electricity company & my job is half office based & half visiting site (mainly farmers so you can imagine the different types of terrain I'm walking on). Saying that, I can honestly say that my life is 99% back to normal. I had posterior approach, a very small incision, no complications whatsoever, adhered 110% to my post-op exercises & was very positive & determined from day one. Its the best thing I have ever done & would do it again tomorrow if I had to. That's not to say I was a nervous quivering wreck before (look at my old posts) but, along with the fantastic support from friends on this forum, my surgeon & physio I am very very happy with how my recovery has been x

Claim adjuster that travels the country handling large catastrpphic types of losses that requires me to crawl arund it some tigh spaces, or on top of some tall stuff. Obviously not the ideal job for hip issues or operations. I've had 2 (failed) hip scopes and am going to go the resurface route this tie. Prior 2 surgeries I was working the next day, because I had to, but man it sucked. This time I'm going to take some time off, I hate taking time off. Thnks to all, and please keep the replies coming, this forum is wonderful and I hope to be one of the success stories that gives ohers hope soon.

Wow, my spelling sucks this morning. Can these things be edited? My grammer was nothing short of "deplorable".
