Hip replacement April 2016

Hi there fellow hippies I don't know if any of you remember me ? I had a THR on my right hip at the end of April . Prior to the operation I was really fit and training a lot but was in lots of pain afterwards and getting no sleep + plus on strong pain killers .obviously I was nervous before the op but looking back know it is was of the best decisions I've made in my life because since the op I'm 100% pain free . I had the op at the end of April and was back at work on the 8 th of June , also I was back at the gym the day after my 6 week check up and the surgeon told me I could start getting fit again.when I exercise now it feels marvellous and really strong and to see me walk you wouldn't know I've had it done .the only problem I've had is that my sleep is not the best even though I'm pain free , apparently it is common after this op ????. So ANYONE who's having this op soon , don't worry you'll be fine trust me ,just take it easy after the op until you have your 1st check up .All the best Scott 🙂

    Well done Scott,

I remember your posts as my op was around 3 weeks after yours.  Like you I was still training lots before my operation, but in a lot of pain and not able to walk far.  All of my OA pain has gone and I can now walk pretty far, however I still have a lot of discomfort from the surgery which is still limiting me. If I overdo it the swelling comes back.  Its getting better all the time though, so I know I'll be pain free before long!

Oh and I'm 40. Having been diagnosed around 35/36 yrs old I was told to hold off as long as I could. I lasted 4 years and I wish I had done it sooner like you. The pain ruined the quality of my life and the prospect of surgery was always hanging over me like a dark cloud.  Its a new me now smile

With regards to sleep, I was having similar problems, however for the last couple of months I'm back to sleeping pretty much all night. Hopefully your sleep will settle down soon.

    All the best,

    Dave.

Glad to hear your doing well. I'm 7 weeks post op RTHR. Got off the crutch this last week feeling better daily. Been back at work since week 3. Had two knees done 2 years ago, full year in PT. The hip went bad really quick, did not hesitate to do surgery. After living with bad knees for years, and knowing how much better it is after surgery, there is no reason to wait. Stay strong, PT and exercise is something you really need to do as a lifestyle change. Good luck and speedy recovery to all.

    Hey Scott

Yip l remember having a conversation with you as you were quite nervous about getting it done as we all have been. And l totally agree. Well scott l am just a year older than you and since december last year l have had both hips replaced and 4 week ago had my knee replaced. Where l toyally agree is my hips are the best desition l have ever made infact most of the time it feels like l have not had them done and am totally normal but somewhere along the line someone decided l should have OA in both knees as well.so they have to get replaced to. Honestly Scott and compaired to the hip l personally thought it was so much harder and more painful I but l cried for 3 days solid with the pain and that was then giving me every painkiller apart from nsaids as l can't take them. The pain still was unbearable but thankfully 4 weeks in and l have turned the corner. Give me hip operations everyday if you want but l still have another knee to do. Like my hip.l tht l was gonna jump straight back in and get it done asap as l.am back driving but still very very sire and mt knee is still so tight to bend so l am being a coward and taking a year off. I can suffer my unoperated knee as its not giving me much pain at the moment. I am going to go back to work where l have been offerred a disabled space incase l slip on ice up.hete in scotland in winter and my occupational health worker also advised me to apply for a blue badge which l laughed at as l am goping to walk normally soon l.don''t use walking aids but then she explained it kinda makes sence. I have just had 3 major operations 2 hip 1 knee and l am getting another knee done. The weather in scotland is awful in winter and if there is ice and snow there is a risk of me slipping and boom.l am back in hospital. Plus l.thought my mums going through chemo and radiotherapy for 20 days solid inma few weeks this might be useful for her if she is tired or whatever. So yes l have applied for a disabled badge even though l am not gonna look didabled or as bad as some pepole that maybe need it more. I dont want to look like a fraud but l have been through the mills this year. I might not get it but l an gonna try.

Oh and scott my sleep.is exactly the same l have not slept a full night in my bed since december last year l spend half a night in it and half a night on couch its the only wat l.get more sleep. Plus its got worse since the knee. l can't sell the knee replacements its was so painful and l still to get my right one to do plus it leaves a more ugly looking scar as they have to staple it so its like a train track on your knee.

But the hips are amazing so glad your back to your old self.

    All the best

Great to hear you are doing so well! I am a week and a half post op and feel I haven't made much progress re pain. Not sure if it's normal still at this stage or if something is wrong. Your post is encouraging for future recovery.

Try not to get discouraged - this thr journey has many ups and downs. And the first 2 weeks is one of the toughest stretchs, if not the worst. You will find yourself doing something automatically soon and then realize it .... ohhh! Then this will happen more quickly in other ways - very encouraging. Then it is hard to get impatient and there is a stretch where you still feel overly dependent (it has been four weeks after all)! And that was was the hardest for me, esp lack of sleep had won me down bday - take your night meds regularly. But everyone has there own path influenced by so many variables including your overall health, commitment to the physio and exercises and diet. This last was hard for me as I had zero appetite and it took me too long to try protein shakes. Be sure to keep up your calcium, vitamin C and D intake. Iron is often depleted, so check with GP about this (I retain too much iron so I have the opposite problem).

      Big hugs and take care.
