Hip replacement at age 50 I'm devastated

Posted , 15 users are following.

Hi

I started with leg pain 9 years ago and after a scan was told I had oesterioarthiritis and would need a hip replacement within the next 10 years.

I now need 30mg cocodamol 8 tabs a day and with exercise can walk the dog for 30 minutes. I sometimes struggle to bend and stand from a sitting position but can walk unaided although with a limp.

I have now been told that my cartridge is completely worn and I need a HR.

I'm bricking it to be blunt.

Just looking for reassurance please

    Hello,

I am 48 and just had a thr 10 weeks ago. I was on pain meds for over a year before hand. I too had no cartilage left and had to give up much activity, including hiking, which I love.

The good news is, I could feel the difference in the joint immediately. Recovery has definitely had its ups and downs but it was the right decision. I'm excited to get back out there!

My frame of mind was...I'd rather have it done now while I'm still youngish...so I can enjoy life without all of the pain and sacrifice.

Hang in there...and look at the positives!!

It sounds like you need the hip replacement now rather than later. It will just get worse and you don’t want to wait too long so the results after surgery won’t be ideal.

Thanks Jackie. I keep exercising thinking it will get better lol and I can avoid haha. The surgeon said he could so next month but I asked for 3 months so I could get strong. Maybe I should being it forward . Thank you for your support. I hope you are okay. 😁

      Dear Diane

It is too late to get fit if you hip is as bad as you are saying so best find the very best surgeon based in experience and good outcomes and get it done ASAP. Whilst it might be a slightly faster recovery in the early days and you might be tempted by the anterior approach if it was me I would go for the posterior approach. This is because of the possibility of nerve damage and the surgeon having a reduced working space with it's inherent draw backs.

I have had the posterior approach twice and made an excellent and very quick problem free recovery.

      Good luck, Richard

Thank you Richard for your support.

I am hammering the cross trainer and doing light exercises I've found on the internet.

Well done to you twice over 😁

I will probably sound like a used car salesman...but I too coped with increasing pain over a period of 10 years until my hip replacement 5 weeks ago. I just kept adjusting to the pain with Aleve and wine.

I can't tell you how wonderful it is to experience pain free days. My chronic back pain is gone and incontinence much improved. Had no idea that hip was affecting everything. Wish I had done it sooner. Be sure to get a good surgery program with physical therapy follow up, and stick closely to the program. You will be mobile and pain free or much reduced in just a few weeks. There is a relatively new posterior surgery now that is less invasive so quicker recovery. Check out all the info on the internet. Good luck to you.

Well Diane has you're quality of life digressed? At 50 I had back to back hip replacements 3 months apart. Believe me not by choice but after my left hip I could barely walk my right hip was just as bad. I tell you the osteoarthritis diagnosis threw me for a loop. I just wanted to be pain free. Now recovery is its own journey one which I am still on. I am grateful for this forum and a great family support system. My surgeon and his team were phenomenal! I am here in the U.S. in Hampton VA. Blessings! Teresa
