Hip replacement at age 50 I'm devastated

Hi

I started with leg pain 9 years ago and after a scan was told I had oesterioarthiritis and would need a hip replacement within the next 10 years.

I now need 30mg cocodamol 8 tabs a day and with exercise can walk the dog for 30 minutes. I sometimes struggle to bend and stand from a sitting position but can walk unaided although with a limp.

I have now been told that my cartridge is completely worn and I need a HR.

I'm bricking it to be blunt.

Just looking for reassurance please

    Hi Diane,

No one was more scared than me, only ever been to the doctor for minor things in the past.

First felt pain in the groin in 2010 after a fall the previous year while walking the dog, over the years the pain got worse. I was fed up with everyone telling me to have a THR, even strangers would comment because I walked like a penguin. I was able to manage the pain better than most I think because I exercised most days, Pilates, aerobics and I have an elliptical walker therefore only ever took paracetamol if I was in agony as I do not believe in taking tablets anyway.

I had THR just over two weeks ago, only six weeks after seeing the consultant and was amazed I did not feel anything. Op on Wednesday home Friday I have never had any pain since therefore, no tablets and the surgeon has evened up my legs, I can stand on two feet for the first time in years. The worst thing I had was constipation and sickness from the oxycontin they gave me aftewards. The three months of precautions are hard for me eg not twisting, bending etc., but each day I feel I am getting stronger.

Do not worry, exercise and eat well as it will aid your revovery.

I’m six months post op now and yesterday walked 8 and a half miles around London. Find a good surgeon who does lots of hip replacements, (Check the national joint registry if you are in the U.K. ), and go for it. Do as much exercise as you can manage to get yourself fit before hand as that makes a big difference to your recovery. Aqua fit is really good as is modified Pilates and yoga. Good luck

    Hi Diane,

Was in similar situation to you and have had my new hip for 3 weeks now.

It wasn't something I was looking forward to but really glad it's done and am in less pain that I went it with, which I didn't expect so soon!

I read everything I could before I went in, planned for the worst and hoped for the bestcheesygrin

    Good luck biggrin

You sound like me Jay. I'm so negative and need to train my mind before hand. Think I just need to accept it 🤣

Thank you for you kind words and here's wishing you a speedy recovery

It isn't nice when you are told that you need surgery and a replacement joint, but you will soon become more comfortable with the realisation that it is probably for the best.

I was in such pain when riding my motorcycles, i realised I would soon become unsafe, and sold them before having the THR.

It didn't go to plan, but at least I lost the awful hip pain.

ill reassure you by telling you my avn was misdiagnosed and left untreated for a year!! and then not much help for another year just being told to stay in bed. I was 24! and a very active individual just barely gonna finish school. couldnt and that put my mind in a bad place. now 26 i am still in stage of avn before collapse.  I wish i had more time that was taking away just being bed ridden and non weight baring. So your age its okay to take a break and breath, rest yourself  everything will go well just don't give up on YOURSELF-

You won’t look back,  walking with a limp isn’t good for your body gets this fixed ASAP before you get used to limping and I got back trouble compensating for my stiff hip. I am nine weeks now back at work and forget I even have a new hip most of the time.

Thank you for your reassurance. Thing is I don't have constant pain so I'm finding it hard to understand. Were you like that at all? I have good days and bad days it's confusing.

I hope you continue to thrive 😉
