HIP REPLACEMENT BRANDS AND TYPES

What brands of hip replacements have you had?  Just got spooked by the negativity surrounding some types - I'm due to have a total hip replacement in a few weeks.  Thanks for any input

Hi. I didnt have the front-type surgery being that I am overweight. So they cut me from back almost to front, over a foot long incision. But that was no problem.

When you get there they should give you some medicine to relax you. Once they started the IV they put in the anestetic and I was out. I woke up about 2 hours later in my hospital room and couldnt believe anything even happened!

The first week you will be stiff and need a walker. Just do everything they say and you shouldnt go wrong. Do the therapy, keep the wound clean.

The ONLY things I could complain about after surgery was having to sleep on my back in bed for the first month, and I had severe constipation for 1 week. They told me to mix prune juice and phillips milk of magnesia. Do it as soon as you realize you havent gone for a couple days and it will save you some pain there.

I was worried about infection before I had this done. But as long as you keep it clean and follow their instructions you should be good to go. It was totally worth it. I was in alot of pain from my left hip to my foot before surgery. I couldnt work anymore, even had to stop biking. Now I feel like I did when I was a kid. No pain at all. My surgery was April 24th and its now June 29th. I was just released to go back to work last week

One more tip to help speed recovery. Start exercising now. I was doing partial squats, and still biked until it was too painful. Hopefully you will get the anterior surgery where they go in from the front without cutting muscles-that heals faster. Just do everything they say and you should be fine!

Thanks Darrel, all good tips.  Have been doing physio for the last 6 weeks, getting done on July 26, so will be continuing exercise till then - it was more to help with the pain, since finding out how beneficial it is I kept it up.  Like you, not looking forward to sleeping on my back.  Glad you are feeling like a kid again - I keep telling people next time they see me I will be cartwheeling along the street.  Thanks for answering.

Hi, I had anterior LHR on 5/30.  My doctor used DePuy Synthes.  I didn't really ask him about the implant.  I trust his judgement, he is the mist highly recommended Orthopedic surgeon in my area.  Our Hospital- Hoag Orthopedic Hospital is renowned for its excellence.  People travel from all over to have surgery here.

P, S.  Don't worry about the incision if you are having the anterior surgery.  Mine is only 3 1/2 inches-yes I measured and healing nicely.  All of my stitches are internal, they glued the top layer of skin so I should have very little scarring.  But I still have to keep it out of the sun for the next year.  I had been swimming regularly before surgery so now I am searching for swim shorts on the internet.  Great idea to keep your muscles strong.

Hi Lindy, mine was French, corail pinnacle by Du Puy, I have titanium stem and ceramic ball & socket, uncemented. Had posterior approach. I didnt know what make I was having or had till i saw the surgeon for my 6 week post op check.  Although I am on the large size my frame is small apparently so I have a smaller stem put in than usual. My body reacted to implant but they couldnt find out what had caused it, so was on IV antibs for 3 days. My scar healed very well. I am 21 months post op and the difference is amazing. We all heal differently, I had some nerve damage but it resolved after 12 months, muscles take up to two years to heal, I agree with Darrel, start your exercises now, the stronger the musckles the better the recovery.

It will be the best thing you do, your pain will be gone and that is a blessing. For me as my hip was very stiff, it moves so freely. My ostepath said she can do so much more wiht me than any of her other hippies!.

    Good luck x

    Dear Lindy

Going on my experience I doubt if you will be able to have any input as regards the hardware your surgeon uses.

I'm interested in how long your original prosthesis lasted and why it has failed.

    Cheers Richard

Hi Richard, I haven't had a replacement before - just heard some horror stories - particularly about the metal on metal type.

I talked to my surgeon about the type of hip. He said he used the polyethylene type as he felt ceramic could have debris, I am not sure how true that is, although there is a polyethylene and ceramic one. I am not sure of the manufacturer. I heard on the news yesterday that they are recalling people with metal on metal for xrays and tests. I am not sure why.

Metal on metal is bad and not just from the wear point of view but I understand there is the danger of a reaction between the two. There used to be an issue with bad squeaking with some ceramic hip prosthesis but whether it was the cup or ball or both I do not remember.

My twenty year old prosthesis was metal and the cup was poly and I think my revision used the same materials. It was the industry standard at the time and given the quite extreme use I had from it I'm well pleased with it's performance.

      All the best

My wife has always maintained that I'm so tight with money that my ass squeeks when I walk. I'd hate to prove her right .........

The brand name that my surgeon used on me is Stryker.  The stem and cup is made of titanium with a 75% porous surface which allows bone to grow into it (press & fit, not cemented) with a ceramic ball.  My recovery was amazingly quick (walking unaided after a week) and has been 100% successful.

My surgeon does the Anterio-lateral Approach.  This leaves a 4-5 inch scar (dissolvable stitches) on the side of my hip.  His name is Dr. Brodie McKoy and he is located in Charleston, SC.

    Hope this helpssmile

      I stand corrected.....

The ball is not ceramic.  This is what I found:

      Longevity

      • Stryker's Mobile Bearing Hip System with X3 precisely engineered polyethylene is designed to help minimize the risk of wear and consequently help prolong the life of the implant.

My surgeon anticipates my new hip to last 25-30 years.

      Hi Lindy,

I am 6 weeks post op and doing well.  I met with the surgeon a couple days ago.  He is very happy with with my progress.  He told me I had the Johnson and Johnson hip.  He has been very happy with these!  Keep moving forward!

      Hi Kimberley

Nice to hear from someone who had the same procedure done by the wonderful Dr. McKoy.

Question - the only thing is that when I walk without the cane I kind of sway.  I hear that is because the muscle isn't strong enough yet.  It was one month ago that I had the procedure done.  No pain whatsoever just that sway.  Do you have any input.  Still a little sore but feeling alot better then before.
