HIP REPLACEMENT BRANDS AND TYPES

Posted , 15 users are following.

What brands of hip replacements have you had?  Just got spooked by the negativity surrounding some types - I'm due to have a total hip replacement in a few weeks.  Thanks for any input

    Hi Lindy,

I had anterior RTHR one week ago.i had my surgery at a top NYC area hospital and my Dr used Smith & Nephew Oxinium implant.  It's similar to titanium. They gave me a brochure about the details and I did a little research but ultimately just put my trust they knew what was best. I'm doing pretty good.  A PT comes to my house every day and runs through exercises and I walk slowly around my house on a walker. He wants me to get on a cane next week. I'm still in pain, taking meds every 5 hours, but it's not horrible. I ice every 2 hours and that feels great.

    I have BioMet parts :-

Stem: Taperloc Complete Primary Femoral, Porous and Bonemaster Coated Stem, 12 x 144mm Standard Offset Type 1 TaperHead: Biolox Delta Modular Ceramic Head, 36mm, 3mm Neck, Type 1 Taper

Shell: Exceed ABT 15° Acetabular Shell, Porous and Hydroxyapatite Coated, 58mm dia

Insert: Exceed ABT Ceramic Insert, Biolox Delta Material

Problem is, my surgeon put the insert into the shell at a wonky angle, and as it is a taper fit, it is now stuck like that.

I asked for the 'parts list' as I am concerned that with the problem I have, that I may just need to know sometime, like if it breaks when visiting some country where I cannot speak the local language.

Good grief would it not be the best long term solution to have it sorted out now rather than hoping it will be OK ?

      Best wishes Richard

Problem is, the surgeon tried to sort it out, but failed to move it because it is so firmly stuck.  I am now with the RNOH Stanmore who are the UK's experts in complex surgery which this now is sad.  They have been monitoring it, and it hasn't moved.smile   They have the expertise to sort it out if it breaks or wears out, which will mean cutting the titanium shell and removing it from the pelvis which has by now grown securely into the metal surface. cry

The main problem I have from it is the psychological effect since the original surgeon said "it could break", mad  which was his reasoning for the second operation to try to correct it.  Otherwise, it works well, and I have at least lost the original OA pain that was so terrible before the operation.cheesygrin

Many thanks for explaining it all to me.  I'm booked into the RNOH for my very difficult TAR revison to go ahead as soon as I'm over the hip revision job.

Best wishes for a good outcome.

      Richard,

You'reingood hands there, they really are the experts in the UK.  I have even seen patients with steel cages around their legs to hold them together when I have been there for my monitoring.

Best wishes for your recovery and TAR revision.

Many thanks for your reassuring words. I picked my ankle surgeon very carefully but there is a limit to what is possible when one's bone is being destroyed by osteolysis.

The ankle revision surgery should have taken place many months ago but had to be put on hold when my twenty year hip on the other side suddenly failed. Thankfully following my enforced non weight bearing of five weeks I seem to be making steady progress.

      All the best Richard

I have a post op appointment in a few weeks. Must remember to ask more about what went in.

I understood that the ball and stem are titanium and fixed with bone cement and the socket is ceramic/titanium and fixed with screws with the intention that the bone grows into it. Maybe I'm mistaken but I'll clarify that when I see the surgeon.

I'm new to this and never questioned what type was going in. The severity of the pain was so great that it was a relief to be given an emergency trauma case replacement.

Certainly very happy now. 8 days post op and i've stopped all painkillers.

Hi Lindy, not sure of the brand, but I had ceramic on ceramic uncemented. Meant to be good if you're active.... Only had it almost a year, but all good so far!

Hi everyone, thanks for all the comments and information - greatly appreciated.  I'll be off now - having my op in a couple of weeks but am having a little holiday first.  Look forward to catching up and hearing everyone's progress when I return.
