Hip replacement needed at 51 - minimal invasive procedure preferred

Posted , 13 users are following.

Hi all,

i have to have a hip replacement and have done some research and have decided that given my age I want to have the minimally invasive surgery either anterior or posterior . However I'm finding it difficult to find which NHS surgeons do this procedure and which are the best surgeons.. Any advice please. Also any views on this approach as well. I have so many questions but if I can start with these.

many thanks

lucy

Hi Lucy, I had posterior, but it was minimally invasive. All went very smoothly. Whereabouts do you live?

      Hi there,

I live in Bedford and that was one of the options i was thinking of. Did you op involve no cutting of the muscle? Might I ask the name of your surgeon?

Hi Lucy, I live in north London and had my surgery at the Whittington hospital. My surgeon was William Bartlett, he’s very experienced and also very pleasant. I hadn’t  researched hip ops particularly,; he told me that the incision would be about 10 cm, but I didn’t realise that was shorter than some. On his recently updated website he shows people walking without crutches very soon after their op.  My recovery was very straightforward, I think probably I didn’t have any muscles cut. I was out on day 2, and I did use crutches, but I was very mobile, and just a bit achy and tired. I was walking outside from day 2, using 2 crutches, but inside I used 1. It was July 2016, and I did have the 90* restrictions for 6 weeks, but that advice seems to be changing. I did read recently that minimally invasive surgery is suitable if you’re slim and reasonably fit, but not so fit that your muscles are really tight.  I was 57 when I had it done, and I swim, bike to work, and walk a lot. I hardly think about my hip now. My surgeon  doesn’t recommend sky diving, water skiing and running. Too much impact on the joint, but I’m skiing again, and he’s fine with that. I wish you all the best, Judith

      Hi Lucy,

?You can research hospitals and surgeons through the National Joint Registry. I had been referred to mine by the physio that had been trying to help me (as your GP always sends you for physio first!) I'm glad she did though, as I would still be getting nowhere if I waited on my GP, who said there was nothing wrong with my x - ray, only to find on MRI that the joint was terrible!  I think I also looked him up via his GMC number. His operation rate was higher than the national average, and more importantly his death rate was extremely low. And he was a nice guy that I trusted.

Many thanks Judith for all that information. I feel more confident about the procedure. I just need to research the consultants now! Best wishes

Hi Lucy, the surgeon I had in the end was someone who seems to have done most of the hips in my village both private and NHS. Everyone speaks very highly of him. If I had gone privately I would have used him. He was fantastic. He has done lots of hips which is also something to check on.

Hi there, could you let me have the name of this surgeon, he sounds like a real find! Thanks,

His name is Gian Singer and he does both private and NHS. He is also very pleasant as a lot of orthopods seem to have been born without a sense of humour. I suppose they are really just overgrown butchers!!!

Hi Lucy I am due to have both hips replaced via the superpath procedure on 31st Jan my surgeon is Mr Michael Cronin I am seeing him privately at Nuffield Leamington Spa although I think he may use Superpath at either Rugby or Coventry on the NHS also I believe Mr Treacy is now trialling Superpath or a very similar procedure via the NHS at Birmingham Royal Orthopaedic hospital. Have you researched Superpath yet if not might be worth a look sorry but I don't know about any other areas in the UK although I do know there are very few UK surgeons who practice this procedure at the moment it is quite well used in the States and Australia . All the best Martin

Go posterior- new studies reflect major concerns with anterior they did not know about. Also, had my anterior hip replacement removed  this am at 9- they can only remove posteriorly. Never knew that- and a spacer placed for 8 weeks. Then a new hip if infection is cleared at that time-posteriorly placed. Don’t go through  what I did!! Hope that helps

Lucy, when I found out that I needed a hip replacement I just went online in the US on my region, mid-atlantic, Balt-Washington area and looked for surgeons, practices, rehab, what to expect, how much would it typically cost my insurance provider and asked my friends in the medical field for their experience or a referral to a colleague.  It doesn't take long and with me it was my second visit that convinced me I found the right guy.  Good luck and I say the sooner the better to get it done.  Also look for the hospital with the lowest incidence of infections.  Look for the best possible outcome.

I was happy with my consultations with the msn who was going to do my oral ankle replacement five years ago but he did a bad job and did not come clean in the following years. It was only when I had spoken to a much more experienced ankle surgeon and gone through all the notes did it really hit me.

Now I go on stats after all it is results that count in the long term not a passing bedside manner.

      All the best, Richard

I am in Baltimore...had mine done 5 weeks ago today, posterior. Have post op tomorrow and don't really even use a cane anymore, but take it with me outside because I'm a bit chicken!
