Hip replacement needed at 51 - minimal invasive procedure preferred

Posted , 13 users are following.

Hi all,

i have to have a hip replacement and have done some research and have decided that given my age I want to have the minimally invasive surgery either anterior or posterior . However I'm finding it difficult to find which NHS surgeons do this procedure and which are the best surgeons.. Any advice please. Also any views on this approach as well. I have so many questions but if I can start with these.

many thanks

lucy

I was walking 1 hour after surgery with the therapist. I used a walker for about 2 days, then alternated between a cane and the walker (walker helps you walk straight). My surgery was on a Thursday, came home Friday, and my husband went back to work on Monday so I was alone with my dogs. By Sunday I was able to maneuver the 2 steps onto the landing so I could let the dogs out and in (not as much as they would have liked). I'm lucky I've worked hard on obedience with them; they sat until I had the door open and was out of their way, then I released them. They got extra treats for doing so well!

It's very difficult to find out which are the best surgeons. My surgeon seemed to be very good, according to the figures he had done loads of THR's & revisions. He still managed to botch my hip, then tried to revise it and botched that too.

He came recommended by a friend who had a successful THR from him some time before.  Don't just believe the figures, they can be misleading.

I had the standard posterior approach, and now have a 9 inch scar, which I don't mind a bit, but I know that some people wouldn't like it. Remember, the scar does fade with time.

    Best wishes

    Hi

I had my left THR in July 2016 at the age of 48 and a right THR at the end of November 2017.

    Both were posterior procedures.

After my first op I was walking without support after around 10 days. This time it’s been slower but I am 5 weeks post op and have spent the last 3 days walking around London.

Yes I have scars and still have some pain but I’m so glad both are now done...good luck whichever you go for.
