Hip replacement surgery waiting time.

Posted , 13 users are following.

I was put on the waiting list for hip surgery at the start of June 2017. I contacted the Nuffield orthopaedic hospital Oxford 6 weeks later and was told it would be likely that my surgery would not happen until the end of the year, that sounds awfully long. Does any one have information on current waiting times in this area?. Constantly being woken up with pain at night and I have to get up at 4:20 am so I get little sleep so a potential 6-7 month wait is depressing. I would be very grateful for any info on waiting times.

Regards

Stephen.

I only waited 1 week from consultants appointment to op, and from my initial gp appointment through to assessment only 2 weeks and fro assessment to consultant was 2 weeks.  I am in Somerset and was given a choice of about 10 hospitals / treatment centres to choose from.  I chose a treatment centre at Shepton Mallet, it generally only has a wait of 6 weeks, but I had "catastrophic joint failure"!! So they fast tracked me.  The hospital is a CARE NHS treatment centre, it has the only excellent rating from the CQC, no history of mrsa, and is brilliant.  Maybe there is one of these near you, not sure if they are just in the Siuth West or countrywide.

    Good luck

    Hope you get sorted soon

Hi Chris the problem is that my hip is a really complex hip and requires two surgeons one that I was told being the expert on my hip problem and the other is my own surgeon who replaced my right hip 2 years ago and he had a really difficult time with it.  Apparently it is trying to get the two surgeons to tie up their time and a theatre time as the operation will take approx over 6 hours. I went to A&E a few weeks ago because the pain was so bad and the doctor could not believe how bad my hip was and the fact they are leaving me waiting in this state.  Hopefully I will hear something soon as I am losing the will to live. I have never heard of the hospitals you are talking about so don't think there are any in my area.  Thanks for your concern.

Sounds pretty normal to me. I was referred to the NOC in December 2016 with an infected hip. I got my first stage (removal of old joint) on March 23 2017. They said I'd need antibiotics for 6 weeks before they could put in a new joint but I finally had the new hip in July.

It's a great hospital with first class surgeons and care but they are oversubscribed so there is a waiting list. Getting a cancellation may be an option though unlikely until you have your pre-op. See if you can speed that up. It's valid for 3 months and once you have had it they could call you in at short notice.

In my experience the result is worth the wait. But I'm sure it isn't great in the meantime.

You could, of course, opt to go privately. Adrian Taylor does NHS work at the NOC and private work at the Manor next door, but it is £12,000!
