just got my first hip resurfacing done on friday Nov 1st! Went from VA to Dr. Gross in Columbia SC.
Im feeling pretty great and staying in top of my pain medicine.
I think I made the perfect choice for me!
Left hip is scheduled for December 10!

I had a Birmingham mid-head resurfacing done in 2008 when i was 50.
I was up and about pretty quickly and after about 6 weeks i was out on a mountain bike and fell off. I jumped up fearing the worst....... nothing.
The joint is very durable and i started running again a few months later as well as continuing to fall off my bikes.
I get checked up every 12 months, xrays and blood because 1 in 5 of my type of resurfacing ops, fail.
I only ever feel a bit of clunking in the morning and had nothing to worry about till my last check up, last week.
The consultant asked me how i was, i said fine.
He then showed me the xrays and said the joint may have moved a bit.
I couldnt see any problem but since then i can feel every little thing where the resurfacing is and can't get it out of my head.
The knee on the opposite (right) leg needs a partial replacement so i dont really want a hip revision.
At the moment there is no pain, range of movement is still good and I'm still doing a manual job.
Fingers crossed.

Yes Larry I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I had a ACL/MCL repair 20 years ago and always thought my pain was coming from my knee. I will also need a partial knee replacement but for now the Eufflexa injections seem to help me for about 4-5 months.

How long did your resurfaced hip last?
I think 15 years is a good enough length of time.
My hip wasn't completely shot when i had my op and i was encouraged to continue cycling right up to the day before the op.
Oddly i could get my bad leg over the cross bar but not the good one?

Alexis_a_5,
I have pretty severe OA for my age and hip structure, I'm just worried about losing the ability to participate in 5k obstacle runs.

I was advised at 46 to go straight for replacement.
Now at 51 I have two artificial hips my first was amazing and completely changed my life. Currently I am 3 weeks post op and doing well.
Everyone recovers differently.
Good luck

So glad your recovery is going well. How active are you or were you up to surgery? I would like to still be able to go on small 5k obstacle runs

A total hip replacement should last longer than a resurfacing, but as with all operations like this the outcome all depends on how good your surgeon is.
I had a bad outcome of my THR, and first revision, changed hospital & surgeon, and have had a wonderful second revision and recovery - 8 weeks now and walking for miles and working out regularly in the gym.

I am fortunate to be able to go out of state if needed to get a great surgeon. I live in VA and talking with a very experienced surgeon in SC.
I am definitely looking to get back to at least my same level of activity with less or zero pain. I run 5k obstacles courses and do HIIT training.

Hi Rocketman
Good to hear from you again...
Wondering why this chat room is much more 'up and go' than the other 'I worry walking to bus stop 3 months post op' hippy one!
Keep on trecking

Hi I had a resurface on my left hip about 13 years ago now and it's still going strong. I had a right hip replacement 18months ago and it's not great to be honest. I would have opted for another hip resurface but there not performed on women anymore!

Jodie, that's great news. Where did you have your ops?

Hi I had my resurface at The Royal Orthopaedic in Birmingham. My left hip replacement was in Rugby. I'm guessing my hip replacement wasn't great for me because I've had 3 different operations on my left hip over the years( I'm 40) so its taken a bashing really

40, I bet that came as a nasty shock?
Mine started at 46 while i was out running one day with a bit of a niggle between my knee and groin so i strarted dropping the mileage which obviously didn't help.
5 months after the pain started i was laying some laminated flooring and couldn't move after so i started going to physios and finally the doctor who got xrays and an nhs physio who told me my hip was shot.
I couldn't believe my running days were over and my wife got in touch with the doctor behind my back and told him i was sinking into the depression.
The doctor told me i was still fit, get out on my bike otherwise he'd treat me for depression.
The advice from my doctor and the letter my wife sent him did the trick, the cycling got rid of any kinks in my back and my hip never bothered me.
The consultant at Wrightington hospital were cyclists too and agreed it helped make a quick recovery after the op.
Now my knee is on its last last legs (no pun) i should cycle more but can't find the motivation, sadly

Get back out on your bike!! Lol. I've been in pain since I was 11 so daily pain is the norm for me unfortunately. I'm quite an optimistic person but I do have the occasional down day and think why me. I go to aqua aerobics 3 times a week and I love it but I really have to motivate myself. I don't know your circumstances but for me my family is my biggest motivater, I've got to be up in the morning for the kids and partner or they'd be absolute mayhem!! Lol

I'm still active but i use walking the dog as an excuse to not cycle.
I used to coach at a boxing club and used to run with the kids uptli 2014 when i started using my bike.
Had to jack in when my shifts got changed.
Being in the corne was the next best thing to actually fighting

Hi Jodie
See my reply in this discussion.
I love both my resurfaced and THR hips.
They don't do resurfacing on blokes either here but would have had it again yes.
Meanwhile 16 yrs of happy resurfacing!

So I'm speaking currently with a surgeon in SC that has performed many hip resurfacing procedures and he has no hesitation to give me a resurfacing. I may have to take some bone density tests to check, but i have severe spurring and he indicated that he is sure I don't have density issues.
