Hippy Birthday to my right hip, 6 weeks today!!

So it's been six weeks and time for some reflection. What's just happened. I feel like a new woman.

Before my surgery I was wearing a patch for pain and taking opiates every night. I was on crutches for three months and used a walker to carry things and get around at work. The pain was terrible.

Today, I'm taking panadol, swimming 20 laps of freestyle, a couple of breaststroke and it feels fab. Last week off, finishing hydrotherapy and heading to work next week. Looking forward to getting back on my bike this week, I've been using a stationary one at the gym.

I have no regrets.

For anyone waiting, hesitating, worried about this surgery it really does make it all better. Yes it hurts a bit but nothing compared to the preoperatve suffering.

Its nearly the end of winter here in Australia, I'm looking forward to getting fit for summer and hanging out with the kids at the beach.

Most importantly my sense of humour is returning. I can see the lighter side of things. Before I was so caught up in pain I was a grumpy cow. I'm enjoying feeling more relaxed and having a laugh with the kids.

I wish for everyone else no matter what stage you're at a better future with less pain and much more mobility....and fun!!!

Happy Days !!

    Hi Georgie

Yes, you and me both now on 6 weeks' anniversary .... and I agree, it feels fab in the great sweep of things.  I'm still just enjoying the feeling of standing up and walking around!

My family say that I've stopped looking pale and in pain and look happier and (wow! yes!) younger!

There's no doubt that it's changed things around for me and taken away a massive obstacle to enjoying life, for which I'm very grateful.  Yes, as you say, there are aches and pains but these are miniscule in comparison.

Well done to you and here's to it all carrying on getting better!

That's great you're doing so well Gergie. I was supposed to have my op today but due to secretarial mix up I'm now not having it til september 25th 😢😢😢😢 I should be where you are now by then if it went ahead today. So I still have so much to look forward to thankfully. The pain is unbearable so I'm counting each long day in the meantime. Best wishes on your further healthy recovery & back to work x

    Georgie,

Congratulations!  I am celebrating 6 weeks today too.  It has been a LONG 6 weeks and I am so glad I am on this side of it.  I too go back to work next week.  I will be walking around a lot, I'm a professor at a University.  Still have some pain and discomfort when walking, definitely a sharper pain as compared to the horrible dull ache from pre-op.  I'm driving, taking care of my kids and doing housechores and cooking.  I have good and bad days.....  still taking some painkillers in the evening...

Thankyou Collette,  I agree it's a long  six weeks, I'm feeling very disconnected with real life, looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and feeling good doing it!! Lots of walking for me too, I work as a nurse consultant so on my feet with clinical work all morning then other research/education activities in the afternoons. My GP won't sign me back full time, said she didn't trust me!!! I'm doing two weeks of six hour days. All the best with your return to work.

Yay, six weeks for me today as well. Yesterday I worked in my sewing room all morning making some new products. In the afternoon I drove into town and did some shopping (using one crutch). Came home, cleaned the chicken run, watered the greenhouse and prepared dinner.

Last night I was wondering why my back was hurting so much!

I have no pain in the operated joint now but have to take painkillers for the other hip waiting for surgery (and my back). The difference in six months is amazing. From March to June I could barely walk. Yesterday I overdid it but usually with a rest in the afternoon I am feeling really good.

    Hapy, happy days

      Kate,

I think it was you that suggested that I draw a pic of the surgery for my kiddos.  This worked really well, thank you for the great suggestion.  My kids were shocked, "they really did that to you mommy???"  I said, "yes, so be nice to mommy and get her some tea!!"  just kidding.....  anyway, they have been more empathetic. Do you have a sewing business?  My 10 year old daughter is obsessed with sewing.

Hi Collette, yes, it was me. I worked with kids for 33 years up until last month when I retired due to ill health (hah). Kids are like adults - they don't understand what they can't see. Most people hear the words 'hip replacement' but don't actually understand what that entails. Remember kids are like goldfish, you'll have to get the drawings out and remend them every few days!!

And yes, I was off work from Sept 14 and all I could do was sew. I started making some gifts and things and it grew. I have always made my own clothes and accessories and am now turning it into a business. I am just developing some simple kits for kids. PM me and give me your email and I'll send something over.

      Hi Kate,

You funny! maybe you could sew a picture of yourself on crutches, and then of you flying over the hills - as I'm sure you are now!

Thanks Mic, been told about the 'funny' before. I am also a witch, an author and an artist so maybe I should call you psychic?

Btw, I decorated my crutches - hah
