Home Remedy for Bartholin Cyst that WORKS!

I'm 24 and starting getting bartholin cysts just over a year ago. It has recurred at least 6 or 7 times, and I have had an Incision and Drainage performed twice, one under local anesthetic and once under general. I can't stress enough, GET THE GENERAL! The needle with the anesthetic was BEYOND painful, and I'm not ashamed to admit I screamed bloody murder when they cut the thing open! Hands down, the most painful experience of my life. With the general, I experienced zero pain and no memory of the procedure.

Yesterday, to my horror I felt the familiar hardened bump start to rise. Today at work, where I sit at a desk all day, the pain went from tolerably uncomfortable to unbearable. After being driven to the ER and speaking with a doctor, I decided to forgo the surgery, or at least postpone it, and give home remedies one last try. In my searches through forums and websites, I saw the same remedy mentioned a few times: Phoebe's Cure. I decided I had nothing to lose, drove to the pharmacy, and picked up the necessary ingredients: a bottle of calamine lotion, a bottle of witch hazel, a bottle of tea tree oil, and a roll of gauze. At this point, it was about 5:00 in the afternoon. I drove home, drew myself a hot bath and added Epson salts, and sat for about 20 minutes. When I got out, I soaked the gauze in a mixture of 6 oz of calamine lotion, 2 teaspoons of witch hazel, and 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil. The recipe actually only asks for 1 teaspoon of the latter two ingredients, but at that point I was almost hysterical with pain so I figured, go big or go home. I soaked the gauze in the mixture, then covered the cyst (likely an abscess at this point) with the gauze, held in place with my underwear. I left this for about 40 minutes, swapped for a hot compress for about 10 minutes, then applied another soaked gauze for about 30 minutes. At this point, I couldn't even help crying from the pain. I took a painkiller, and drew myself another hot bath, this time using table salt instead of Epson salts. I stayed in again for about 20 minutes, then restarted the cycle of changing the soaked gauze every 30 minutes or so. I could feel the cyst growing in size and getting even harder, and I noticed the mixture in the gauze was causing some stinging. At around 9:00, about 3 and a half hours after I drew the first bath, (WARNING, this is gross! Please do not read past this point if you are squeamish!) I was lying on the couch and suddenly felt liquid drip down. I put some mild pressure on the gauze, then went to the bathroom to see what was going on. Full disclosure, I'm also on my period right now, making it extremely difficult for me to tell exactly what was going on. I pulled the gauze away and sure enough there was a large spot of pus about as big as a Canadian Twoonie. I wanted to cry in relief, but didn't let myself believe I was out of the woods yet. I swapped for a new gauze again, left it, checked again, and sure enough, more pus. I put pressure on the spot where it seemed to be originating from with the gauze, and when I pulled it away, more pus. I cried with absolute relief.

I have never, ever found a home remedy that was even remotely effective for this ailment or any other. I am BLOWN AWAY at how effective this was! Let me preface this by saying I'm not a medical professional by any means, but I believe this worked by bringing the pus to the surface of the abscess until it finally burst. The originating spot of the pus was the spot that had become the hardest and probably the most painful point on the abscess over the three and a half hours of changing gauzes.

If you experience painful bartholin cysts or abscesses, PLEASE give this a try! Absolutely worth it!

I have been applying the gauze on bump. But am not sure if applying at the right spot. The abscess is on the internal side of vagina which extends to the lip on the outside. My question is, do i put the gauze inside side of the vagina or on the lip on the outside?

Hello, thanks for sharing all the information ladies. Question, for the Phoebe's method that worked, how long did you already have your bartholin cyst for? A few days? Weeks? Months? Also, could there be, or has anyone had their symptoms worsen from using Phoebe's concoction; or any side effects?

    Thanks!

Please help, I had a BC that was NOT infected 3 years ago. after doing a sitz bath i was able to drain it. However it came back 3 months ago and I only just started addressing it now but sitz baths are not working at all. I also started taking serrapeptase for 3 days now, and no improvements. It is not painful but it really bothers me. Should I try Phoebe's cure? Is it possible that the duct has already permenantly closed up? 😦((((

Phoebes cure worked for me in 2 days. i first got it and the pain was minor. I bought the supplies (witch hazel, tea tree oil, calomine lotion). After a sitz bath I mixed the 3 ingredients together and soaked them up on a gauze and placed on the cyst. i put a pad on my panties to hold it in place and left it on overnight. No changes overnight but it got worse and more painful late the next morning where it was painful while walking. I continued doing sitz baths and redoing the gauze throughout the day. Around midday it seemed to have drained a little and was a little less painful but it was still pretty large and had so i continued the sitz bath and redoing the mixture on gauze. I did about 5 sitz baths all day and slept with the gauze overnight again. This time it worked because it burst overnight. it mostly drained on its own onto the gauze and the pad I was wearing. I drained as much more as i could the next morning and cleaned it up. It is not painful any more thankfully and hopefully it heals up after this. If you're going through this don't give up. Just keep trying and it will burst eventually.

My BC finally started draining last night. however I'm not sure how to treat now. Its slowly draining, but do I continue to take sitz baths? How do I make sure it continues to drain all the way? What worked for you?

Victoria. this thread saved me a trip to the ER. A remedy of(3) 20 min soaks, and witch hazel gauze completely drained my grape sized horrendously painful BC in 4 hours. I may have lost sleep tonight but oh my God I can walk again. so grateful to have found this post. I was fine all day (started out small) until I got home and it blew up. THANK YOU.

Well finally years later I have a name to the mysterious bump I get at the end of my cycle. Tonight after multiple days of severe pain, my cyst ruptured. pouring blood for a very long time. Then a doctor tells me its a BC. so im researching and so glad to have a name to something ive had for years. I've never had one rupture until tonight. I will definitely try these remedies. Im 30 and they started early teens but i did not know that it was a BC. ive always been scared to tell my ob until 2 years ago and she said herpes and tested me it was negative and then said an ingrown hair possibly and most recently maybe an allergy to my pads. shes never seen it because well it only happens at the end of a cycle. they sure are painful. tonight was awful. i randomly started crying and got a fever and felt dizzy. doc gave me flagyl and said in a few days I may need to be lanced. sounds awful. anyways glad i found some other ppl who are experienced and know what i have experienced.

Wanted to add my story since it gave me a lot of comfort to read everyone else's while i couldn't sleep at night because of my abscess (thank you to all the beautiful ladies who shared!). I'm 31 and it was my first time experiencing this horror! I never noticed a cyst stage but mine came on feeling like I sat on a bike for too long, and over three days became more bothersome but still not terrible. I ended up going to a Planned Parenthood anyway to have it looked at, and the nurse practitioner told me what it was and seemed fairly alarmed by how hard it was (I love PP... but her reaction and delivery totally freaked me out!). They ultimately couldn't treat it there and instead referred me to a women's health clinic and prescribed antibiotics. I started taking 3-4 bathes with epsom salt a day, found this site and Phoebes cure, and tried it for about 48 hours...I was envious (but of course glad) of how quickly it had worked for others! I couldn't see a head or really tell if it was working, and eventually stopped and switched to aloe for a bit because my skin was starting to feel very irritated. Today it seemed to be burning/stinging constantly, was more painful, and looked larger. It was about the length of my index finger, and a bit wider. And very firm! I called the clinic since it had been 3 full days and I hadn't heard from them. They said the soonest they could get me in was four days from now...! I really wanted it to drain naturally but was feeling somewhat hopeless at this point and in a lot of pain... and proceeded to just sob in the bathtub for half an hour (this was my low...I indulged in the self pity for a bit). I was feeling very helpless and frustrated. I regrouped and took some more painkillers and felt a little better. Finally a few hours later we were about to have dinner and I stood from a curled up position... and to my extreme relief suddenly felt something wet...! It was truly the happiest moment of the last week. Or month. The relief was immense.

So, all told it lasted just over a week for me, and once I started treating it more aggressively still took four days of baths, Phoebes cure, and way too much Advil (it did help a lot though). Hang in their strong ladies. Give your bodies all the love. It really sucked, but I'm grateful for everyone's insights. It definitely was most painful right before it ended, but the patience finally paid off. Good luck my chickadees!

I'm a regular sufferer of these cysts, getting it few times every year since early adulthood. I'm now menopausal, so I've had my share of this issue. I've never had it developing into an abscess, never had them lanced or operated and I'm way too fidgety to take sitz baths. So basically it's been leaving it be, grinching in pain and no sex until it clears, typically 4-6 weeks after. I have avoided touching them, and had to wear a pad as I've been leaking due to the cysts keeping my bits too 'open'.

I recently had a new appear and after one week of uncomfortable presense in my bits, I thought to use the old school remedy of honey. Honey is used with horses to draw out puss from infected wounds, it's anticacterial and sugar draws out fluids..so why not. Google says it's not working, but I've seen the effects on horses... So after a good wash, I dabbed the cyst with honey, 5 sec treatment only, single drop in finger, and went with my day. Following morning I became aware that the cyst had changed, and upon inspection it has dropped into about one fifth of the original size! I don't know if it has burst for sure, or if it has dried or if the infection got lesser, but whatever goes on it's most certainly due to honey, as never in one week has there been any changes before.

I'd say it's totally worth to try honey, it certainly is my way from now on.

Thanks so much for sharing your incredible experience. I've a recurring Bartholis gland that swells. It's not really painful, just a little uncomfortable during sex sometimes. I've had it drained once by my OB/GYN . Today he said the only way to get rid of it for good was to cut it out. I'm hesitant to do that when antibiotics seem to decrease the swelling and its really not a problem . I'm afraid that removing it will cause more trouble than it currently is.

I just started getting these BC about 2 months ago during my 6th month of pregnancy. I don't know if it's because I've gained so much weight and I'm really sweaty down there or what, but they are so painful. It's hard to walk, sit, stand, bend, & pee&wipe. I have had 2 on the left side (on 2 different occasions). They swell up so big and they get so hard! They both took about 7 days to burst on their own. I use a scolding hot water bottle (as hot as i can stand it and sleep with it between my legs at night and i also apply neosporin. I feel like this helps for me, but i will be trying this method if this happens to me again. Thank you.
