How am I doing.........????

Posted , 9 users are following.

hi there, I've just had 2 new knees on dec 3rd and came out of hospital 6 days later. Both my knees are still swollen and still quite numb over the old knee cap area and on the sides, the swelling is hindering my flexing/ bending exercises and I just don't know how I should be doing, because a double knee replacement is a lot rarer than the normal single procedure. I am going between slight euphoria and periods of being quite down cos' I just don't have anyone or anything to compare myself against. How long does the swelling, numbness last is the main concern for me at this point. If anyone is able to provide some support or advice I would be very grateful. I am a 52 year old male. Thank you in advance.

Hi! To post photos you press on the "mountain" looking square above right  when you are in reply box, then you can get photos off of your IPad ! To use emotions just press on the smiley face square, or I have a smiley face button on my iPad which I can use as well.

      best wishes,

Just had my first hydro therapy  and loved it!

Lots of bending and stretching the knee with no pain in the water.

    Even managed a little swim.

Can't wait to go back in two days.

    Shattered now though lol

Hi, was it a class or did your physio work with you?

      Was the water heated?

Our hydrotherapy pool is closed for refurbishment until Feb.

I do find our spa lovely though.

      Well done

There were just three of us,  all with leg  problems . A nice young lad and a woman of my own age.

The pool was deep enough to swim in and heated like a bath. So lovely to move around without pain.

The physio therapist got in the water with us and went through a range of movements tailored to suit us individually. Some were great fun. Almost an hour of continuous movement!  I didn't want to get out!

I get 10 free sessions and then can continue afterwards for a small fee if i  like /need to!

It's all part of the free health service here in oz smile

Staples came out today!!!! 56 in total. It wasn't to bad, a little bit stingy. My knees are a little bit more sensitive as a result- also because I think I put some cream on them to help the skin re rehydrate, but also bcause a lot of the bruising is now coming to the surface. This doesn't help when you're trying to sleep, as every time the quilt cover brushes the exposed skin it feels very sensitive!!!!  My first physio visit isn't until next Tuesday, so until then I'm carrying on with my own stretching and flexing exercises. I think I've come a long way since I got out of hospital last week. Let's hope the coming week continues to show improvements!!!👍👍👍👍👍

I can't stand anything on my leg either and have to sleep with it above the covers

Hi Suzi, I was where you are two weeks ago,but suddenly took a giant leap forward, the physio said thats how this often works. I went to see her yesterday and just sat and cried, she didnt do any physio with me just sat and patted me all over and said " dont worry this is all part of this huge op, I promise you in two weeks you will be even  further forward so be patirnt" No wonder they dont tell you about the malestorm of pain and emotions before!! We would never get it done! Every day is a new day another chance to breath again, this time will pass. PS can WE have some sun Suzi? its dark and cold here,no wonder I get depressed smile

Awww Fran! If i could send you some warm sun i would  but sending lots of encouragement and hugs!

      smile

I had my second  hydrotherapy session today and feeling a bit happier. Not so stiff this time and i think it's a bit straighter!

I keep rubbing Lioton gel on the knee and that seems to help too -cools it down a bit

Hoping for a better night tonight. I was reading from 2-4.30 am because i couldn't get comfy.

Do you get those awful muscle spasms at night? Like jumpy legs but worse?

      Hi,

I just went Christmas shopping with my daughter. I drove far longer than I did last week and almost dragged myself into the house. I did it to the max, hope I don't pay for it later.

It has been a scorcher here today. I had a spa this morning and did exercises, sort of sideways cycling under the water for a while, but it's nice to let the jets massage my leg.

I am finding it so hard to get comfy in bed too. I don't get jumpy legs but I do get this tightening that seems to get tighter.

I keep rubbing the Lioton on too, it takes the pain away for a little while too. I am glad I was watching The Bold and the Beautiful on the bike without the remote so I couldn't fast forward the ads, that's how I saw it.

I have a lot of trouble first thing in the morning, my knee is so stiff I can hardly walk up the stairs.

My old great darn has arthritis in his back legs, we walk up side by side, he lets me hold on to him.

Thanks Fran.  I read for an hour or so and then finally managed another hour before the sun came streaming through the curtains! Another day dawns in oz. !

Seeing my surgeon later today for a 6wk follow up any advice ladies? Questions i should ask?

if you enjoyed the hydro you cuold ask your local pool if they do any kind of session , our local pool warms its small pool twice a week just for people who have any kind of movement probs like we all have and its run by people who can show you what to do or you can just do what the physo has shown you

I woke up at 6am after going to sleep at 12. My knee is very stiff, but not painful.

yes, I am happy with the way it's going now. Yesterday when my daughter needed to go to another shopping centre further up the freeway, I was a bit scared as I hadn't driven that far or in heavy traffic since the op. But it was fine, and I managed to keep up with her. I pushed the trolley though, that helps. I went out at 2 and got back at 6. Then I took her out again to the local shops, she had forgotten cat food!

Today my knee is stiff and a little tired, but it's fine, I'm happy.

My next physio is 9th Jan, I'm going to ask about hydrotherapy.

Hi well it's 2am in the morning in uk, I am wide awake and can't even get comfortable on sofa but I am sure spending money on line. I had better put this ipad down and try to sleep. Lol

Haha Susan, I was like that! eBay now loves me. My daughter and I are going to the Kylie concert, so now, thanks to my knee and eBay, I have a houseful of flashing wands, crowns etc, all made in China.

Why did I think I needed a purple wig? Blame it on the painkillers!

      Getting better every day!

Just back from my 6wk check up.

All ok. Just need to massage the scar a bit.

5-110 degree range of movement so just need to work on straightening mainly

I mentioned how emotional we get sometimes. He had no idea and wrote notes to mention it in future so patients don't worry.

Nice guy. -  give  me a photo of my new knee lol

Yes, I told my surgeon, it was news to him too.

Before people found this site and found that we all are on emotional roller coaster, TKRs must have just put up with it alone, oh, that's so sad, I think I'm going to cry lol

      Caz x

I was going to answer your last post, then realised that you are 3 hours in front of me, haha

Maybe the forums will pave the way to better management!

      smile

The time zones are a pain. Often i wanted to get some sympathy from my daughters in the UK and realise they'd be sleeping!

So nice to have you ladies (and any gentlemen) to share/compare with x
