How did you injure your ankle and what's your age?

I've been reading posts for a good while now and have found everyone to be so kind, caring, compassionate and helpful.  People are really friendly here!

I thought it might be interesting to just give a short sentence or two, on how we got hurt and if you want to, include your age.

I got hurt at a Prince Tribute Skate (roller skating) on May 10th.  I had a Closed bimalleolar Fracture of left ankle.   I'm 51.   biggrin

Im 45 landed over on my ankle falling off a foot and a half drop about 6wks ago. Ankle and lower leg swoll up like my foot had swallowed a melon. Could not weightbare on it due to pain. Had crutches from a previous injury which Im thankful I still had as the pain was unbearable to put foot to ground..went to hosp and doctor barely looked at it, got an xray and he diagnosed a sprain,he said no breaks. I asked was there possible lig or tendon damage, he replied nope..shoved painkillers at me and told to rest. 2 days later the bruising started like a rainbow sock and swelling still bad and pain was a 10 going up my leg into my knee so went to a different hosp for 2nd opinion. They gave me a boot to wear and an appt. to return in a week for a scan as they said small breaks or torn ligs will not show up in a xray due to the swelling. Cue a week later and no scan, 2 docs had a thorough inspection and told me to return in 3 wks. Still mo diagnosis from them.Physiotherapist gave me foot exercises to do, physio suggested it was a bad sprain with lig damage due to the limited movement of my foot and pain I was having.

Cue 3 wks later. Doc looked at it. Bare in mind Im still in pain and ankle is still swollen. He sends me for an xray which shows nothing. Him and another doc had a long look and discussion at the xrays Still no diagnosis from them. He told me to return in 2 wks for (that) scan if pain had not subsided. Seen the same physio who gave me more exercises. I kept a photo diary from the start over a few wks which I showed him. He said it was definately a bad sprain and torn lig damage judging by the swelling and bruising.

Told to stop wearing the boot. Ive been weightbaring last couple of wks anyway with bearable pain As off last week Ive not wore the boot but the pain is getting worse and started going back up my leg again especially my calf muscle at the back of my knee. Painkillers arent doing anything. Starting to worry incase of DVT so keeping an eye on it but Ive still a week to go until my next appt. Has anyone had similar experiences? Apologies for the long rant. Seriously considering going to a&e over this pain, feel very disheartened and frustrated and had I got the scan when I was supposed to get a proper diagnosis and the proper treatment. Im stuck in diagnosis limbo!!

That is terrible!!  I'm so sorry you're having such issues and if were me, I'd be really worried.  I know you are!  I hope you are able to get some answers that can REALLY help you.  I know it must be horribly frustrating, not to mention depressing.  (At least if it was me I would be).  Please keep us posted!  Thanks for sharing your story and I wish you the best of luck!

Thankyou Beth. I think when I go for my checkup next week and they dont intend to do a scan I will demand one. It will be 6 wks late but better late than never. Yes it is starting to get me down but just have to soldier on. Will keep you posted 😊

It sounds like you need at least a CT scan if not MRI. And I would recommend going to see a podiatrist. That's their specialty. Good luck!! I sure hope you get some answers!

That sounds awful. Not knowing what's going on is the worst. At least when you know and have a diagnosis you can start to get things sorted.

Definitely sounds like like a good idea to go to A&E.

39, male, broke my fibula having sex standing up on 8/26/16 (I know!) 6 screws and a plate and reapired dislocated ankle (torn ligaments). Surgery 9/7/16, cast for one week and then walking boot toe touch for 5. Getting rid of the crutches but keeping the boot at my 6 week check up on 10/17/16. Prognosis is back to normal by Dec 1. This has been a long, hard road for an active person. But, I took the chance to spend time with family and take up some art classes. My advice to anyone in this situation is that staying involved in something you enjoy and going out more and more as you can tolerate it has been key to my recovery. I also hired a personal trainer after week 2 (cleared by the doc for upper body), and it has helped me immensely.

Well, LMAO!!  OMG!  I love your honesty and I have to say, I have read quiet a few stories, but never one quite like yours!  Anyway, your advice is great and I totally agree.  Sounds like you have a good attitude and that will help a lot.  Best of luck to you!  :-)

Oh boy.....that would be a real mood breaker!   I broke mine taking a picture of the moon however I have to say.....your story beats any and all that I have read.   I truly want to say "How?  Seriously?"   But....I'm not going too.  I have to say though that it made me chuckle.    The advice I have been given so far to avoid future breaks is that I am not to be outside taking pictures of the moon anymore.    Not sure if you want the same advice  though.  lol    Good luck at your next appointment!  Hope you are mending well!  Great advice as well.  It's definitely a long road to recovery so it's good to keep your mind busy. I'm only slightly past 2 weeks and starting to get restless.

Friend brothers double bouncing is on trampoline, landed wrong. No idea what happened though, could of been fracture, could of been bad sprain or whatever else😀😀

I haven't been on a trampoline in so many years, that I can't remember the last time I was on one.  LOL!

I'm 41, I broke my fibula about a month ago. I was just standing against a wall my knee gave out and I went over on my ankle and it broke. I'm not athletic or overly active, but was told by doctors that due to all the times Ive ripped the ligaments in my feet and knees growing up caused this.

Idk but I'm not sure how ripping ligaments 10 years earlier can cause a break like that in a bone so easily with absolutely no activity. I can barely spread my toes apart or put any weight on it without causing swelling.

I'm supposed to take the boot off next week according to the doctor, I hope it's healed by then.

Hi everyone, I broke my ankle in three places and dislocated it while I was bouldering. Went to the emergency room to put my ankle back, had to wait 3 weeks for surgery. Now I'm one week in post open. Going a bit nuts already, keep crying a lot which has nothing to do with the pain. I feel like I'm getting depress specially now that my husband has left on deployment.

I have been reading all the post and it's the only thing that keeps me sane right now.

      Hi mom390,

I cried today out of frustration, maybe even a bit of depression. Not being able to get around is giving me cabin fever. Been in a boot & 2 surgeries since June 2nd. I think those normal sad crying spells is part of the recovery they don't tell you about.! Waiting is the toughest part.

I hope you have family & friends to keep you company & cheer you up! You need them more than ever! You can only watch so much tv, read, do puzzles, text, play phone games, etc.

Your missing your honey during a difficult needy time. Sorry you have to go through this recovery process without.

Thank you for your answer. I have a doctor's appointment today 4 weeks after surgery. Have been having chills and body aches for the past two days, not sure if it's cause of the stitches or something else. Not looking forward to getting the stitches out since I know it's going to hurt a bit.

Have been having problems sleeping even when I take percoset. I wish someone could tell you about the pain and mental health you need to get through this. It's a very horrible injury.

Hope everything is good with you.

      Hi mom390,

I started pt 3xs a week. It's a long road to recovery for me. We have to try & just push through it.

Stiches coming out aren't very painful. I hope it goes well for you. Sorry you getting sick on top of dealing with your ankle pain & healing.

Try to stay strong mentally. It's one of the hardest parts of this journey. This forum is a good place for support & to vent!.

Can you stand on your foot nowith that you have started pt? It is a long journey, hopefully not too long for you since you don't have to have a cast on anymore.

I was trying to sleep right now and pops and feeling like my stitches are coming undone woke me up again. Is that normal?

Did you have problems sleeping before? If you did, did you try a sleeping aid. I'm not sure if I should since I'm still taking xaralto for the blood clots.

      Hi Mom390,

I would put a call into dr. Did u looks at stitches? How do they look?

I will be at pt for 6 weeks, then go to Dr & get more pt orders.

Hey mom390, I do have a hard time sleeping. All done with pain meds too. I take a sleep aid to help. Sleeping with both can be. Hard at times. I am learning to weight bear with boot on 1st. I stood with weight evenysllt distributed from or this week. They're building up my quad muscles 1st. My ankle us very swollen after. Very long day using knee scooter & beari,g weight. Feels tight & like my skin wants to pop open.

Yes I got to look at my stitches today. The cut looks like an L so the doctor took the stitches from the top and bottom of the L. He left the middle stitches on because there was some blood coming out loud. Also they whole area looks black. The doctor said one more week and I get the boot. Super excited about that. Although can you take the boot off to sleep?

Why is hard to sleep with a sleep aid? I told my doctor and he gave me some muscle relaxer to sleep. I hope the feeling of your skin pooping open goes away. I had to move my foot 90 degrees today and it was very painful. Can't imagine how painful is for you to put weight on it.

      Hope you feel better.

      Hi mom390,

So did the doc say your stiches looked ok? I had some stiches left in too like you.

Good luck when you get the boot. Every doc order is different with the boot. I have to sleep with my boot on till I see doc in early Nov. I had to have my my boot adjusted to a 90 degree angle too. Hurts at first but foot gets used to it.

I'm not a very good sleeper anymore. My sleep aid helps. But I have cats that wake me up at night

& I'm sleeping on a sleeper sofa on the 1st level of my home.

My swelling goes down after rest, ice, elevation. Putting weight on my foot is a slow process & doesn't hurt too much. I'm ready to hear any pt pain to get moving & walking.
