How I cured my gastritis

Posted , 375 users are following.

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

    Hi ,

Thank you for sharing your experience, I want to know what do you eat for breakfast?

I have always problem with that because I am lactose intolerant as well.

    Thanks again

    Hi Ines,

Do you have to remain on this diet forever?

    Regards,

    Dee

It seems that way but who knows.

I still follow it but a bit more loosely: sometimes I have mild spices, I don't restrain the fat, ... It has been a few months that I feel perfectly good now so it is well worth it.

    Hi Ines,

I'm glad I found your post because I have read some horrid stories about people feeling incredibly awful with gastritis and not being able to get rid of it... When you read this you just feel powerless, frustrated and lose confidence in your body capacity to heal. So thank you for your post, everything makes sense and I will follow your advices as best as possible.

In my case everything started "suddenly" and it was apparently due to the Helicobacter. I have to say my diet before was always good, no many fats, lots of vegetables and fruits, avoid processed foods etc.. Despite of this, I was unlucky, which made me quite angry. I'm not a very stressed persone either (maybe subconscious stress?) but I get quite anxious on some periods.

As someone asked earlier, once your stomach is healed, do you think you can live again normally? I mean, eat whatever you want, no more pains etc..?

    Thanks again!!

Hi I'm 40yr old male been diagnosed with chronic gastritis due to HP. Been coping with this for 6 month now. Every PPI on the market I was on these anyway due to Hiatus Hernia diagnosed 3 years ago. Got Sucralfate (carafate) of my consultant because I was sick of throwing PPIs down my neck. Been on them nearly 2 week I think they are doing the trick slowly. Also with me eating smoothies for breakfast soup for dinner and ommletes for tea not much else. I take 1 day at a time and praying this awful thing will heal. And I mean awful I feel for every person on hear. I have been refund things on and off on hear for a while. And I think everybody is different and you just have to keep the faith and eat whatever suits yourself. I think I have read every Gastritis arrival there is. I would get myself worried about it all the time. Now my focus is on greying this thing and me right. The consultant told me after the endoscopy nothing to worry about just gastritis see you in 8 week. Now this man is an expert so I have to keep reminding myself this is not life threatening. But as you will all know sometimes you see no end to it and it can get you down. I have found that positive thinking and watching every single thing that passes your lips there is light at the end of the tunnel keep the faith. Eat well. X thank for listening

Thanks Kevin, I really hope you will heal soon! Patience, faith and light are the key words for us. Take care!

Yes you to keep posting on here it has helped me. Because it can be a lonely thing you think it is only happening to yourself.

      Thanks keep the faith x

Kevin you are so right, everyone is different and what works for some doesn't for others.  I was diagnosed with Gastritis over a year ago, and I can happily say that I am doing soooo much better!  I took the carafate for awhile, along with Omaprazole 40mg.  I still take the Omaprazole 40 mg, I don't take the carafate anymore.  I started taking PepZin GI a while back, and it has helped so very much.  I also, believe it or not I read this and I do it every day-squeeze a half lemon, mix with 1/2 cup of warm water, drink on an empty stomach.  Wait an hour before you eat.  I know some of been like no way, lemon is acidic, but I am telling you it has been a HUGE help.  I am able to eat pretty much whatever, I mean no fried or overly fatty foods, but I eat pizza, pasta, even McDonalds cheeseburger and fries every now and then!!  I also take Ginger capsule, in morning and at night, all natural ginger capsule.  So, I know I sound crazy but I am so much better than what I used to be, I can even drink a beer on weekends and survive it !!!  Sounds crazy but worked for me, so there you go!  Good luck to everyone on here, bless you all smile

Thanks suzie good to hear your fine now I'm so jealous ha ha. No honestly I'm only just realising now what a hard road it will be and has been, but it can be done. Thank you x

Hi Suzie! Thanks for sharing your positive news!! Do you have any side effects with Omeprazol? Do you take it in the morning? Also how long your gastritis lasted? I so hope I'll be able at one Point to eat a burger hahaha. I could eat it now, and probably wouldn't THAT horrible, but I know it wouldn't be wise trying it right now.

Everybody is different, since your gastritis had a known cause, maybe you will be able to eat normally once you are healed but in my case I still have to stay on a somewhat strict diet. I wonder if my digestive problems are due to some sort of auto-immune reaction actually.
    • Posted

It is a good wonder, did gastritis happen to you suddenly from one day to another? Or did you have digestive issues before also?

I wonder whether when doing a biopsy with the endoscopy they automatically test your cells in order to know if it is originally due to an auto immune reaction.. If they do other tests, I guess they should do that one too.

I had digestive discomfort for a while before the endoscopy but I had no idea what it was. I talked to my GP who told me basically that it was in my head and that I should see a therapist! This delayed me going to see a gastric-enterologist for another year. I tought at the time that I might have diabetes. I had no idea what was going on but I suspect I had a sensitivity for a while. Then I received tons of tomatoes and apples from my mother in law, and I cooked Indian food for my husband who loves spices and garlic and after that I got really bad.

I have a feeling doctors are still relatively in the dark regarding auto-immune problems and the only thing they do for more serious auto-immune diseases is to give medication to decrease the immune system activity but then there are some risks and side effects.

But you could say my gastritis came slowly over months/years.

As always, heal the symptoms but not the cause, which is wrong. If we were fine at some point, why can't we be fine again. When I was a teenager I had chronicle tonsillitis, and I ended by healing myself with homeopathy on a long term... I try to believe it could be similar with gastritis, I try and keep the faith anyway..

Hi Ines , Its been long since I wrote on this thread!

I tend to believe the Auto-imune theory too specially aftr being tested it positive for Thyroid. More than that I think its a case of Visceral Hypersensitivity ! Our Gut has become oversensitive to everything , giving rise to intolerance , inflammation. I can say this coz after going through course of  v small dozes of Anti depressants I have much better tolerability now. Somehow we need to reverse this sensitivity in order to become normal again. One more thing which can help is to follow stric diet & food combination.

      Hi Kevin,

My case is almost similar to you. Am 40 Yr M, with HP related Chronic Gastritis. Except never had Hiatus Hernia. I have tried almost everything you could read in this thread including Sucralfate. It forms a nice coating on the Gut and prevents acid irritation. You feel good temporarily but the gastritis comes back eventually. Not to discourage but as you said everyone is different some things may not work . But you r on the rigth track a Positive set of thinking is very much essential, stp worrying , listen to your body, Focus on diet, Avoid everything that irritates your stomach. Wish you a complete recovery soon !

Thanks mahesh1976 started a diary now with food it gets to the point were you have to think about everything that goes into your mouth. Has yours cleared up now?

I still have to watch what I eat, but the point is that I can eat more foods than I used to be able to eat.  I hope you get to feeling better soon, the stomach pains and bloating is so not fun sad

Your welcome Jessica, and I have not had any side effects yet with the Omeprazol, I take it in the morning and then wait about 20 minutes or so before I eat.  My gastritis was diagnosed little over a year ago, I had a bad attack and was in so much pain.  It's been a slow process but the things that helped the most were when I started doing the lemon drink and the Pepzin Gi.  Recently started the Ginger capsule, seems to help calm the stomach.  Hope you get to feeling better very soon smile

Mine has cleared upto a larger extent not completely though! At times feel completely normal.. Tempted to eat junk and then it comes back. All Home cooked food goes well. ... How abt he UP? Has it cleared? I blame the heavy doses of antibiotics for my status now. It has disturbed the gut flora and increased sensitivity and intolerance. Did u also go through HP eradication treatment?

Getting there slowly I think. Good days and not so good days. Yes went through triple antibiotics, then had endoscopy had biopsy nothing nasty thank god, and told negative for H.P. How long roughly did it take for you to get right? 👍

After being on Omeprazole 40 mg. b.i.d. for 3-4 months (since about Nov. 2014), I went to do my usual donation of blood and was denied due to low blood iron level.  After checking things out, I found that PPIs can cause low iron and low b12.  Also when I went for my regular thyroid test, I found that was off.  At my physical in August a complete blood work was going to be done and my usual thyroid test.  I mentioned iron and mentioned I assumed that would be standard but I found out it was not.  The iron was still off.  My thyroid was back to normal--but I had also been on natural supplements for 3 months.  I will be going for my 6-mth thyroid next month and I will ask for a repeat iron (and this time also a b12).  I have been on liquid iron for the past couple of months.  I am trying to wean from PPIs altogether.  I have reduced to 20 mg., taking b.i.d. every other day.

yikes that's concerning....I asked my doctor if I should wean down to 20mg and he didn't think it was necessary.  I did have blood work done couple months ago, but not sure if iron was checked and I know thyroid was not.  Hummm I think I will call my doctor and schedule a thyroid and iron count.  I wonder why he doesn't want me wean down?

My thyroid is checked regularly because I am on med for hypothyroidism.  I see a naturopath in addition to the GI (and GP).  The naturopath mentioned that PPIs do interfere with the body getting the nutrients in the foods we eat.  Neither the GI or GP talked of this.  I have done a lot of reading about the medications and interactions with each other and the body.

Well I was detected for HP roughly 1 and half year ago. Did Antibiotics 3 times coz earleir courses werent successful. Not sure if its still eradicated. My Gastritis worsened after that. Now last 4 to 5 months with diet control & some meds its much much better.
