How I cured my gastritis

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

Heat treatment does help a lot, the best is big grain of salt, heated in bag in microwave, second is rubber water botter, and electric pad is the least.

Hi, erick if there is a flare up the thing that work for me was 1spoon of baking soda and 1/2lemon on a glass of warm water i let stay for 10 min then drink. The fastest way.

Henri, it is very interesting about baking soda and lemon, I read other people using this method successful too, but I am just confused with the theory of this: alkalinity (baking soda) + acidity (lemon) = cure stomachace. Since I just had mild gastritis, one DGL does the trick when have a flare up, I am trying to add zinc to my diet, first I took zinc pill, it irratate my stomach, then I ate some oysters, it did the same thing. Does anyone know if any form of zinc can be easy for your stomach? Thanks.

Hi Eric. I have found I am able to tolerate Mega Food zinc which is

      food based.

      Hi Eric

You know my cousin, uncle, and my sister had gastritis the way they got cure was drink pure lemon juice. Two lemons for 9 days before breakfast at least 2 hours stop for 9 days then another 9 days. It sounds crazy but i just know they did it. I did try this method. For 9 days i star feeling hungry after that. It was good but because you dont how to do the diet

I'm curious about Lemons too, why are they good if they are acidic?

I got stuck. I was eating almonds, apples, drinking soy milk, putting chia seeds on my food . ask snack therefore my stomach was empty for so long I got worst. With gastritis the diet is very important but we have to know what we eat, how much, so the stomach is not erritate. it is very confusing. I have been with this struggle for 5 months. I know I'm not the only one. Now I eat just simple. Hopefully everything goes better. I still drink glutamine, probiotic and liquid sink in the morning before breakfast.

      Hi, Dee Dee

For some reason the lemon neutralize the acid in the stomach. When I did this I felt my stomach warm inside like it was drying. So that is like is healing. Well thats how nature works. I know other people if there is a flare up they just drink one pure lemon and after 10mi they are like nothing happen. Well we have to try to find out. There.is also articles that drinking Lemon with water it helps alkalinize the blood. I also tried this it give me a lot of energy. But because after the triple therapy for HP I use to take probitic with this drink the probitic was not working. So I stop. You know that after the triple therapy in order to get better from gastritis your Flora has to get better and that take time to get back. We just have to keep trying everyday....

Thank you Emma for the valuable info, just ordered it from Amazon.

Henri, many people's theory about lemon juice curing gastritis is they don't have enough stomach acid, so added acid help digestion. Per your experience, it seems like the lemon juice you drink nutralizes the stomach acid, it works like Toms, but does not help your digestion. We don't know the real chemical reaction, but hope that really work to cure you, not just numb the stomach temporarily.

Well, My Theory is .. Its Not the acidic level of the Food that we ingest decides the acidity But the ability of the food to stimulate the Stomach to produce Acids inside. Simple reason is the PH of Acids produced by our Body is soemwhere around 1.5 to 3.5 which is quite acidic. Nothing in the world we can eat which is more acidic.  Most citrus food are considered to be alkaline because they dont stimulate stomach acid instead neutralize them. At the same time they do irritate your stomach temporarily if you have a flare up already.

      Hin Henrinho,

I think pure lemon juice might be harsh for your stomach, but why not trying a few drops in warm water and see how it goes. Maybe I'll increase the intake gradually.

I've also been through the triple therapy for HP, how long do you think we should take probiotics for?

      Hi there,

When would you recommend for stomach irritation that is quite effective in your opinion?

      Thanks smile

I think Generally to avoid all irritants like Excessive Stomach acids, Citrus food, spices, Too much salt etc. Key is to avoid food that would stimulate stomach acids.... Such as dairy , fatty foods, High amt of animal proteins, spices.

All alkaline foods such as vegetable juice, melons, grains, pulses etc are ok

      Hi Jessica.

About the probiotic we should take until we see that our Flora gets better. Doctor told Me for 2 months. but I did not see my stools solid. When I take the probiotic the stools are solid so that means the probiotic is working. Keep in mind the the triple therapy kill the bad and good bacteria. Therefore we have to eat healthy to get back.

      Hi eric

Please I need to tell me how was your diet. Like breakfast, snacks that will help me a lot.

You know I'm confuse on the diet. When we have gastritis it's is to have our stomach always working or give him a rest.

I eat at 8 am Oatmeal with banana just like says Ines says

10:30 baby carrots with granola some granola

12 just like Ines says under the 3 cups rice, vegetables and chicken and I take 40minutes to eat

      3:45

One instand oatmeal and small banana that give me a chance to get home after work.

5:30 6oz of carrot juice With probiotic

      630 dinner

I notice that I gain a little weight but Iike I see no improvment.

Any idea please I will appreciate. I'm taking 60mg dexiland. And I drink 36oz of water everydays.

      Hi Henri,

Seems like you are still on strick diet, then you shouldn't worry too much of your weight gaining, since you are eating low calorie and low fat. Once you are free of symptoms and weaning off dexiland, then you can add more fat.

I continue gaining my weight back, what I eat different than you now is more fat:

      1. More olive oil when cooking my lunch and dinner

      2. Half of Avocado with each meal

      3. Three eggs a day, one mixed with my breakfast oatmeal, one cooked with my lunch or dinner dish, one in my soup

      4. One bowl of soup with lunch and dinner, made of spinach, chicken broth, egg drops, corn starch, soup with meal helps my costipation as well.

      5. More fat for my snacks, morning and afternoon snacks includes Almond (40-50 pieces), smoked salmon (2 OZ), red deliciou apple (1 big)

You are still on PPI, low acid in your stomach, it is hard to digest so much fat. But once you are free of symptoms, you will gain your weight back.
