How I cured my gastritis

Posted , 375 users are following.

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

Also you mentioned that you can eat melons, pears but my suggestion is that fruits are big NO-NO while suffering gastritis. I can't tolerate them at all, even banana hurts me sometimes! (spring water hurts too if I bad sometimes)

I bought filtered water. It's better than natural spring water, isn't it?

Also I'm started to drink half lemon water with a pinch of rock salt on every stomach every day. I read somewhere that could be good home remedies for gastritis, it's also alkaline. (lemon itself is acid but when it comes to body, it leaves alkaline residue)

And one more question for you,

I eat overnight oats (with a little bit goat yogurt) and I want to add just a teaspoon chia seed on it. It's high fat and raw tho but what's your recommendation about it?

    Thank you a lot.

I am fine with alkaline fruits but if they hurt your stomach, go with what you feel.

I am surprised you can tolerate lemon and salt though, lemon is acidic when it touches your stomach lining and personally I feel a lot of pain if I have even a little bit of it in my plate.

Filtered water is only better for the stomach if you use a special filter that makes the water more alkaline. Regular filters make the water more acidic I think.

Chia seeds should be fine. If you want to try it and let us know, please do.

Yeah, I know your standing is alkaline side. Mine is, too. This is why I prefer brown rice instead of white rice and lentils (alkaline) instead of chicken breast.

Also, got some anxiety waves due to long last nausea, a year of it. Definitely my anxiety triggers nausea and even if I keep my diet strict, my symptoms don't go away.

The docs I've met keep saying that you can eat whatever you wish, your stomach is ok (scoped and diagnosed mild chronic gastritis) but I'm still thinking diet is important role in healing process. But stress is main killer IMO!

I would not recommend strict diet for too long. I had it for 8 months, it causes costipation and other issues with my health due to deficiency of nutrients, even my primary doctor told me that was a VERY VERY BAD idea and asked me to change immediately, during that period, I lost 30lbs. With help from ines, I gradually reintroduce more food, and I gained back about 10lbs last several months. I was so afraid of eating apple, now I can eat 2 big apples a day without problem, and I can eat many good fatty food. I felt anxious/stressful all the time, now it almost all disappears. Meditation and exercise do help, but needed nutients are very important too. The longer on strict diet, the more nutrients deficiency, the less body power for recovery, it is vicious cycle. So everyone with gastritis issue, after necessary strict diet (2 weeks by Dr. Jamie), shoud gradually reintroduce all the food (except very acidic and triggering ones).

Hello ines, I tried Chia Seeds recently, it helps with BM, no issue with stomach, I put one Tbsp in oatmeal when boil it in the morning.

Hi Eric, I agree on your comment, nutrients are so important, and being on a strict diet can be a vicious circle. I now try to eat a bit of everything, except red meat, citrics, fat foods and sugary ones. I still have to eat small portions otherwise it upsets my stomach and I feel filled up very fast, but I have to say things are better than a couple of weeks ago. Did you use to have some pain in your bowel as well ? Do you think this is normal?

I am 5,1 and weight 101lbs, which for me is not a lot.. My normal weight used to be 105lbs, so not a big difference but I do feel a bit too skinny now.

Do you have some specific recommendations on how to gain back some weight?

      Thanks in advance =)

      Hi Eric

On my experience i do not recomment chia seeds not unless your stomach is healthy because when i was eating This plus that im taking ppi it takes so long to digest. So that cause me to get worse with my gastritis. now i eat small amount of food 3/4 of cup. Under 3 cups of food Because for this 60gm dexiland make my digestion very slow. I gain 15 pounds in 4 weeks and that means food is staying longer in your stomach in my case. I drink 3 bottles of water slow during the day.. Ines is good help with this advise.

      Hi Jessica,

I have not touched citric food for over a year, and I occasionally take a bite or two red meat when family cooks, sugar only comes from fruit, but I added a lot of fat, good fat though, avocado with each meal, more olive oil for my cooking, add nuts and smoked salmon for the snack, also I eat one bowl of soup with lunch and dinner (made of chicken broth, spinach or mushroom, egg drops, and starch), I think the fat contributes to my weight gain

It was very weird, my costipation came after I had symptoms free from gastritis and heartburn, and I had gassy and sore lower abdomen (not really pain), all tests came back negative, including colonoscopy, the GI doctor said she could not do nothing, but just priscribed some anti-spasm med, but I have never taken it, I think it would give more damage to my system. I defined myself with IBS, and I think all these are caused by nutrients deficiency, I added more fruit, vegies (esp. steamed carrot), and started taking medical grade probiotics, taking vitamin Bs, zinc and fish oil, now my BM is very normal, only occasionally have sore lower abdomen, and I am confident it will be fully cured as body needed snutrients back to normal.

Henri, very agree with you, when you are still on PPI and not symptoms free, should be very limited on fat and hard digested food.

Hi Eric. Could you let me know which probiotics you take. Do you feel

they help because the ones I take dont seem to make any difference.

Also I do have problems with any types of fat, good and bad. Do you

soak your nuts and which ones do you eat? I have been trying to

totally cut out sugar but find myself still having it as there are so little

things to eat. Do you think this could be holding my healing back?

      Thanks, Emma.

It is VSL#3. I do feel it helps with IBS bloating, but everyone is different, something works for you may not work for me. When I was battling with gastritis, I tried PepZin GI since it works so well with ines and others, but it hurt my stomach so much, but aloe vera juice cured me in short period of time (it tastes bitter, sour, and spicy). When I was battling with hurtburn/breathing acid, I tried drinking other brand of aloe vera juice all day long for several months, consumed more than 20 gallons, my symptoms were still present till I added Vit B complex, but aloe juice worked so well and quick for acake; now working with IBS, I am almost certain it is caused by nutrients deficiency, so now I eat more foods with more supplements, C was already solved.

I don't have problem with fat even I have been waiting for so long to try, my gastritis was caused by taking antibiotics for over a month, so stopping med was helpful too. I just bought from market, roasted Alomnd and Cashew, with sea salt only.

I don't know sugar is ok or not for gastritis, when I had gastritis, I drank Chamomile tea with Manuka honey without problem, but now I am working for IBS, I completely eliminate sugar.

Thanks for that Eric. I too tried pepzin gi but it hurt me. Most supplements

do unfortunately. Have never really got to the bottom of what is wrong

with me but it is my intestines not my stomach and I have very poor

digestion. Have been having treatment and did have candida and a bad

bacteria which have now gone so am feeling a lot better but still

not right so hopefully trying a different probiotic may help.

Hi Eric. Just read through your post again and noticed you mentioned

vitamin b complex. Do you think these helped most of all the supplements

you took to heal your gastritis? Which ones did you take?

Im going to see a nutritionist next week for some help but its not

going to be easy for her to treat me as I,m unable to take most

      supplments.
