How I cured my gastritis

When I got diagnosed with mild gastritis (but no H. Pylori) and esophagitis, I looked all over the internet to find what to do. I did not find many accounts of people who have cured themselves successfully and how they did it. So I thought I would write my story once I am cured. Here it is. If you have cured yourself from gastritis too, please share your experience below as well.

Many people ask how long it takes to be cured. At first I started on dexilant for a month but I did not see any improvement. After a month I kept taking dexilant and I started the low acid diet in parallel. I got much better in 2-3 days. After two months on dexilant and one month on the diet, I felt completely good. Then I stopped the dexilant cold turkey and got a lot of pain and acidity back in my stomach. Now I regret I did not take the dexilant a little longer as my stomach was obviously not healed and not strong enough to go through the rebound effect of stopping dexilant. I regret also that I did not stop dexilant slowly taking it every other day for a week, then every three days for a week, .... I felt anxious about taking a medication that has so many side effects taken long term and I wanted to stop immediately, which was not reasonable.

Anyway there I was back at the beginning with stomach pain and acidity day and night. I felt pain related to the esophagitis as well which really scared me. I hesitated to take dexilant again but I decided to try to cure myself the natural way. Below I describe what I did. I got cured in approximately two months, getting slowly better week by week. After two months of natural cures I had no stomach pain anymore and no excess acid, I was able to sleep again, felt like a new healthy (and lighter -- I lost a few pounds) person. However after those two months, I felt that I needed to follow the diet another month for my stomach to get strong and be able to handle a less strict diet.

THE CURE

Books

Most of what I did is summarized in two books which I found very useful:

The first book is "Dropping acid: the reflux diet cookbook & cure" by Jamie Koufman. This is the book I based my diet on. The only disagreements I have with the author regard dairy products that I stopped taking as they make the stomach produce more acid (very clear for me), and the use of ginger, manukka honey and aloe vera which I find too irritating and/or acidic (and I don't feel that they help). Also she does not talk about salt which is known to be irritating for the stomach lining in excess, I felt an improvement when I lowered my intake in salt. I will explain the diet more in details below.

The other book is "Ulcer free! Nature's safe & effective remedy for ulcers" by G. Halpern. I know you may have gastritis and no ulcers but the two conditions are related and what cures one usually cures the other too. I used some of the natural supplements recommended in this book. In particular slippery elm (this one is actually not mentioned in the book) and DGL licorice for stomach pain (coat the interior of the stomach lining), Zinc-Carnosine (reduce inflammation and protects stomach lining - I felt a great improvement after starting to take it especially with acid production at night), and cabbage juice (finished my recovery with this one, after two days I had no stomach pain anymore at night). I describe the supplements more below.

What did not work for me

Mastic gum hurts my stomach. It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori which I knew I did not have (I had been tested).

Prelief removes the acid in food and stomach very efficiently but causes constipation.

Tums works well for 45 minutes but then there is a rebound effect with the stomach producing more acid.

Manukka honey hurts my stomach (Too acidic, Ph level 4, but maybe also because of the tea tree essential oil in it). It is supposedly helpful against H. Pylori.

Aloe Vera is too acidic (around Ph level 4), and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Ginger is irritating and I don't feel it is doing anything positive.

Probiotics helps with digestion but not really for the stomach.

Zantac works very well at removing the acidity but makes me feel dizzy and incredibly tired.

PPI worked very well at removing the acidity and pain in my stomach while I was taking it while doing the diet, but I had a bad rebound effect when I stopped (one must stop slowly by taking it every other day for a while). Also having too low acid in the stomach because of PPI might cause problems in the long term (problems with Calcium and B12 absorption, bacterial infection more likely).

    Hello colleagues

Its been sometime since I was here. I have been doing the diet thing since last year. it almost 8 months. At first things seemed to be ok and I was losing weight as its supposed to be. But when I went to see my gp he siad the weight loss was too much and performed colonoscopy and I was diagnosed with colitis. He said its common in European countries but not Africa (Malawi) I was given drugs but have had bad reaction since started taking the drugs. Am taking prednisoline and salazopyrin but am having reactions. weaknes severe gas activity etc. My gp says its not the drugs and that I should continue taking them but I feel its one of the drugs am taking. I dont know what to do. Am still taking pakreoflat, domperidon and pontoprazole, gaviscon for the gastritis. I have been sick since 28th December till now am not back to myself. If anyone knows about this plz help me with more info.

      Hello alice! ,

I feel sorry for your state and really wish to recover soon! Well the drugs prescribed to you comes under carticosteroids and can make you vulnerable. Generally these are given in severe cases. Is your colitis really severe? Does it have ulcer formation as well. What symptoms did you have? Are they chronic in nature? For sure Doctors are the best judge to prescribe but at times they become over aggressive. If his treatment is more dependent on your weight loss then you should take a second opinion.

Very strict diet for long duration makes things worst!

Did you try probiotics course? Some researchs have shown positive results for colitis patients.

Alice, my experience tells that my health weakness caused by nutrients deficiency, since I had strict diet for 7-8 months, WAY too long, and lost 30lbs, when I met my GP, she said, " Your hearburn just a small issue, but you (strick diet) are going to kill yourself." And she was so mad at me and ordered me to eat everything, and 5 meals a day. With ines' help, I gained back about 10lbs last several months. The strict diet is designed for 2 weeks, couple months maybe ok, when over done, it causes nutrition deficiency, then our body just too weak to fight for any disease, since we limit ourselves to just eat certain food, so our body is more likely to get food alergy to the foods we used to eat, then we are afraid of to eat, then we getting weaker, and our immune system getting worse. So a LOUD WARNING to the new comers - DO NOT change to strict diet, just modify your normal diet - elimite triger foods, no acidic foods, don't eat too fatty food, take in plenty of nutrients to help your body to fight. Don't be too rigid, for example, if onion does not triger any symptoms to you, continue eating it even if doctor and internet says it is not good.

Alice, your doctor should know your situation better than everyone here, so I would listen to his advice, at the same time, add nutritions to your body, eat more varities of foods, it is hard at the beginning, but try to find the ones are easier for your system; Vic C, B complex, Zinc, fish Oil, probiotics, and broth will help your immune system too.

One alert on Probiotics! PLS DON'T USE THEM ALONG WITH YOUR CURRENT PRESCRIBED MEDICINES! As these immunosuppressants make you vulnerable to even good strains of bacterias in probiotics. Try them Only once you are Off those medicines!

The only symptom was weight loss and maybe diarrhea, but I was told that its one of the side effects of taking magnesium. So I thought diarrhea was due to the magnesium I was taking. I was also thinking that the weight loss was due to strict diet. I did not try probiotics I dont know them. Are they medicines as well or what? According to the doctor it was chronic.

Tks Eric for your advice, will try to eat as much as I can but the only fear is that it can trigger more acids especially now that am experiencing a lot of gas in my chest cavity.in what type of foods do I find zinc, vit c. b complex.

Then I would suggest pls do take second opinion from specialist doctor coz the symptoms you mention doesn't call for steroids in my opinion! You would do more damage to yourself

Probiotics are supplements to improve gut microflora! VSL#3 is One of good reccomended one.

Alice, when I met my GP at the time I lost 30lbs, she asked me why I ate so little, my answer was, "I am afraid of more stomach acid and more heartburn." Simliar like your fear, right? If you want to be healthy, I think you will find a way, smaller meals more frequency, or whatever way you feel better. A lot of food contains benefical nutritions, please google it. If you can't get enough from foods, you may add supplements, mega food has good reputation of not bothering stomach.

Dont know whre you get this from.  Probiotics can cause you no harm at all. And lots of people take them together with their medications or natural supplements or both. But the rule if you want to not waste money on them is to not bohter to take them when you are taking antibiotics as they get cancelled out by them. Not because they do you harm but because you are wasting your money on them when they cannot help you at that time.

You are also forgetting that there are dozens of different probiotics and they all achieve different results. How can you be VULNERABLE TO GOOD STRAINS OF BACTERIA? The more of them you have the better.

Well the information is available in the leaflet of the supplement itself. It's under General Caution Head of the same. Ppl with compromised immunity are vulnerable! So I tend to believe it. With the Antibiotics it's not a good idea for more than the reason mentioned by you. It can deactivate some of the strains of the bacteria as well.

    Hi,

Can you guys please tell me if Chammolie tea is good for GERD ? is there any other tea or soup good for stomach ? response is appreciated.

I find Cammomile tea is the best for my gastritis. It actually helps get some gas out of my stomach. I'm not sure if it's the same for GURD. Don't drink pepermint as it's a bit too harsh on the stomach.

Well, I just had a cup of camomile tea for first time to heal my gastritis and it did not hurt. Who knows, perhaps it will help. The Internet commentaries on camomile tea suggest that it heals stomach. All I can tell you is that it did not make anything worse today. I do not like the taste, but will drink two cups a day with nothing but tea in the water to heal my gastritis. Good luck and let me know.

Don't know about licorice tea, but have read about "DGL licorice." So I got some tablets and so far have taken them twice. I'm not quite sure if they helped, but I do not think they made me worse. They taste good too. No information yet on the licorice tea, but will look into it. The DGL is Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Root Extract. It also contains anise and stevia.Made in Canada. Chew one tablet 20 minutes before meal. Too soon to tell whether this licorice is any good, but it did not give me a severe attack.
