How likely is it that I got herpes from my most recent partner?

I looked around on the internet and all the answers I found seemed rather vague to me. Only days after being with my latest partner I have what I believe to be my first outbreak. At first I thought it was vaginal tearing from rough intercourse but its only seemed to have gotten worse in the last 4 days. I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow but I want to be as prepared as possible to having the "talk" if the results are positive. From what I've read and know about having the chicken pox the virus can stay dormant in your spine and some people never have symptoms but if you do have symptoms does that mean you got it from your last partner or could it be possible that I received it from a previous partner?

Even though I haven't gotten the results yet I told my partner. He kept texting me and I didn't feel like I could keep up the facade. He was very understanding and apologized although he's unaware he's ever had it since he's never been tested nor had symptoms and also blamed himself for not using a condom. I'm very happy he's understanding about it. He's one of the oldest men I've dated (he's 45) so I'm so very grateful he's mature about it because it could be so much worse! Unfortunately he has to put his doctor's visit on hold because he's out of town with family. Thank goodness my work just ended (I'm a contractor) now I just need to take care of myself.

I was going through the Same exact thing with mine ... Only I just couldn't keep holding the secret in . Especially since we had sex and what not im sure he was getting suspicious of why I kept telling him to use a condom when before this we rarely ever used a condom Since I was birth control. lots of things have changed I'm not even too much interested in sex anymore .. Doesn't feel the same feel Like a lot has just been taken away from me .

so he doesn't think he is infected ?

He accepts you, hold on tight to that . That doesn't happen to often they seem to throw the finger and accuse you ..

      Anyways .

I got the swab test I'm pretty sure what makes it even scarier was the doctor wasn't even going to swab me for herpes until I told her to randomly .,

She thought it was a chemical / 2nd degree burn (which I thought it was also) from using nair and then having sex during that whole situation... It's crazy she is a whole licensed doctor and didn't think so

How you doing now tho ? Any pain or anything in that nature ?

Glad you are taking this in a good positive way . Everyone must know that couldn't wouldn't put you through if he didn't think you could do it

No, he considers the fact he cook have bigger it to me, he just hasn't been able to get tested yet. I don't know how serious he is about our relationship but at least he been supportive in consoling me. Again my PCR blood test came up negative. I'm very skeptical because the pain has been getting worse and it appears there might be a new cluster of blisters. I haven't had blisters yet, just lesions. I'm going back to the pcp tomorrow but I'm afraid he'll just settle with the blood test. I'm going to Planned Parenthood Friday to get swebbed since my pcp doesn't seem to want to do it. I'm just very frustrated. If this isn't herpes then what is it and why just settle for one test?

Sorry that first line should have read, "he considers the fact he could have given it to me". Stupid autocorrect.

I have not heard of a pcr blood test for herpes, so I'm not sure which test he did. Must be IgG or IgM. You need a pcr *swab*.

He said specifically it was a PCR blood test. No swab was taken, he said he was refusing to do an igg because it wasn't necessary. Found this website that states it can be a blood test. It tests DNA and DNA is found in blood too. http://www.can.org.au/Pages/Hepatitis_C/Testing/PCR_Testing.aspx

P.S. Pcr looks for viral dna, and hsv is not blood-borne, so only antibodies can be detected by blood. You should find out which test he did, otherwise you might be doubling up on tests when you go to PP.

Again he said specifically he was doing a PCR blood test and not an igg. No swab was done. I'm finding multiple resources that PCR can be done as a blood test. Makes sense. PCR is just testing DNA which can be done with multiple types of samples. "A sample that contains a nucleotide sequence (from blood, hair, pus, skin scraping, etc.)" Not to say a swab test shouldn't have been done, that's just how it was done. Here's another quote from wedmd, "PCR blood test: The PCR blood test can tell if you have genital herpes even if you don't have symptoms. The PCR test looks for pieces of the virus's DNA. This is the most common test used to diagnose genital herpes and is very accurate."

This article also refers to the false negatives it can provide as you said due to there not being enough antibodies. Like I said, probably wasn't the best way to test for it since i have an outbreak but I did not mishear the doctor.

If he does not do a swab and Western Blot test I wll get them done at PP. This is why I rarely go to see a pcp for these issues but again I couldn't get an appointment with PP until Friday so didn't have much of a choice. Pcps are typically set in their ways and don't listen do your requests so they're often a waste of time. Also he is male so I'm still annoyed that he has not offered me anything for pain. My infection is getting worse.

Correction I've seen two male doctors at this clinic, the intial PCR test was done in urgent care. The second was the pcp whom also refused to do the igg. He scoffed, "One is enough."

Pcr blood tests are only done where hsv becomes disseminated, which is not common (very serious should that occur), because the virus doesn't reside in the blood in healthy people. Many of those general herpes sites have iffy info that's copied and pasted or which don't provide context. Bottom line is that it's not accurate unless you have hsv in the blood, which you wouldn't (only antibodies after a few weeks, which are not the same thing). It is highly accurate, however, if you do it on a herpes lesion. Anyway, for reputable hsv testing info, check out ASHA.

For general pain relief, you can take paracetamol or ibuprofen. For topical pain relief, you can use lidocaine.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes I've read several articles on ASHA which is also where I got my info on pcr. I've been taking ibuprofen already and pain relieving neosporin. The pain relief is not strong so I'll look into the lidocaine. I'm really thinking of going to University of Washington Medical urgent care tomorrow for the Western Blot test if I can get out of jury duty tomorrow.

Western blot also requires antibodies, which you won't have yet if newly acquired. It is usually to determine low (or otherwise suspect) positives for Type 2 by IgG in those with existing Type 1.

ASHA only mentions pcr for swabs, which as I've mentioned, is the most direct and accurate test for the actual infection going on right now.

Anyway, I am going to hush it, as I've said more than enough on the topic, lol! Good luck with the topical lidocaine and whichever tests you end up doing. smile

The doctor At UW Medicine said he's pretty sure I have it from my symptoms and agrees that it was too early to do a blood test. He just suggested to come back in another week and I will most likely test positive. I see my pcp tomorrow and depending on his response to the blood test I might switch my pcp to UW since they seem more caring and more willing to respond to my questions. I'm still keeping my Planned Parenthood so see if they have more offers on testing.
