How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...

If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

Best of luck to you. Please let us know how you are doing after your surgery.

I am 5 weeks out from my 1st attack and was better after 2 weeks and finishing the antibiotics. I hope not to have a flare up.

The hard thing is , they change the "dite" so much because they are unsure what causes the flairs , it can be food or stress after your 1st , if you start to feel the dull pain start with the antibiotics to try to keep on top of it , or you will end up like mine . Mine gets that bad it forms gas bubbles on the outer layer and thats bad . I have had that many cameras suck up me " and not one has gor me dinner " lol its not to much fun you can also get bowel narrowing i gots that too woohoo me , you know go hard or go home lol but im having it cut out while no flare so i dont get a stoma , if they have to do it because of a flair good chance of a stoma ... i to thought it would pass with diet BUT after the 1st it will come back and vist like the inlaws , oh yeah the fat thing my 1st i had a cut 6 pack sad good diet and all .

Isn't there a certain number of colonoscopy's a person can get? You talk as if you have gotten several.

Hello: I am new to the forum. I have had 3 uncomplicated attacks since May 2016 so I am interested to hear others experiences. I was wondering - sometimes my pain will be mild and this always seems to happen on the weekend. The Dr. has given me a prescription for antibiotics, do others start them immediately upon having any pain or do you wait, or call Dr. first? I am wondering if it was something I ate or even drank and if it will feel better. It's been about 36 hours now. Acidic foods, juices, etc seem to bother me, but not always. Thanks for advice.

I am 5 weeks out from my 1st and only attack. I was given 2 types of antibiotic for 7 days. One of them really made me feel worse than the attack. It also made me lose about 20 lbs which is one of the side effects of it. I think they give it to you for that to take the pressure off your gut. But I am small framed and now am really trying to gain 10 lbs back. I had a cat scan 2 weeks after my attack and it showrd diverticulosis not "itis" which means I was over the attack and no infection. I go for my colonoscopy this week. I started feeling better after I finished the medicine and even better after 2 weeks. I follow the advice of some of the posters on this site as well as my GI. During the 1st 10 days I only ate chicken noodle soup and drank liquids. The meds takes away your appetite. I gradually added foods that are easy to digest such as fish(baked/broiled), chicken and drummettes(not fried) and potatoes and canned carrots. I have not had any red meats at all as of now. I do not eat salads, raw or steamed veggies and no nuts. No cabbage or greens of any kind. No fruit, I tried a cantelope and I think it upset my stomach. I ate that and grilled shrimp that I cooked so I am not sure which one did. I also tried drinking ensures and they constipated me. I tried almond milk with sugar and it didn,t agree wth me either. I will try it without sugar to see if that works.

I was told not to eat salads, raw veggies, nuts, beans, juices or fruits with skin.

I also drink hot ginger root tea for the inflamation.

Some post say use tumeric as well as something called gse. I tried tumeric and ginger on the grilled shrimp and I am not sure if it was that or the shrimp that upset my stomach,

My food intake consist of: Chicken(every now and then I will try a fried piece), baked and sweet potatoes, canned carrots, fish and rice, water, cranberry juice, decaf hot tea and coffee, apple pie, yogurt ice cream and mango fruit smoothies(this is how I get my fruit). This doesn't sound like much but it is safe for now. I tried pasta crabmeat salad and french fried. I will try adding things to my menu as time goes on but nothing on the do not eat list. I hope not to have another flare up.

Read some of these post for help.

Do not try to cheat too much on the food. Learn what you can and can not eat. I think that is how you get sick again. Did you lose weight and did you gain it back?

Although I am much better and eating regular foods I still get the tired feeling. But the other symptoms are gone. The first 3 weeks I didn't sleep well at night. I felt like my body was trying to go into shock and my left arm was numb. I sleep much better now. I also have normal and regular bowel movements without having to use laxatives. Some people take them everyday. I choose not to because I go on my on.I tried using metamucil to substitute for fiber since we can't eat veggies but it constipated me and almost set me back from healing. I tried a obe a day multivitamin and stopped that because of the vitamin d in it. Acidic foods and drinks are definitely not good for you. If you know they bother you don't drink them. The people on this site have not been posting lately for some reason. I look forward to reading and sharing so I hope they come back soon.

There is no treatment for Diverticulosis. It is also uknown why it happens today. It is believed that psychology is a reason like IBS. Once you have diverticula, you have to live with it for the rest of your life. The issue is the inflammation in those small holes, because the feces goes into those small holes in the intestines. The solution is to eat raw garlic all the time and for the rest of your life as it is a natural antibiotic. Otherwise, you will have to take medicine type antibiotics which I dont recommend. How many times can you take a medicine ? Since it is a lifetime issue. The surgery is not a solution, even if they take the part of the intestine with diverticula, it will show up on the other parts of the intestine. Also eat fiber and dont become constipated. Also fix your posture, diverticulosis are very related to how much pressure you are giving to your intestines.

They say it comes with age and mostly for the elderly. And they also try to say it is because you're not eating right. I know that part is not true because I always ate healthy foods. Yes I ate fried foods, pork, fast foods etc at times but I ate good. And I had or have great posture. I know this for a fact.

Are you aware of how many over weight people their are in the world.

That is why this can not be about pressure on the intestines.

Their would be many many or people with this condition than it is.

My co-worker has a similar condition to where she can not eat beef.

She has to follow a diet exactly like people with divers.

She also had some of her intestines removed and it did not help because she got sick again and ended up in the hospital for weeks.

And she lost over half her weight. She gained her weight back and was treated at mayo clinic. Now she is back at work full time but still with a strict diet and like us praying she does not have another flare up.

I often wonder if she has divers but is not saying it. Although the condition she says she has does exists.

Not everyone has multiple diviticula so surgery is a permanent  solution for many.I don't believe ther are is a"diverticulitis diet" since everyone is different, you just have to figure out what works for you. Also the therory of no seeds, nuts, etc has been debunked by research in the last 2 years, I've printed out several articles and also was told bu my doctor. I went back to a normal diet eating everything in moderation and I have been fine. I was never a big water drinker but am now, i think that has a lot to do with keeping everything moving through the system.

Hi linda. I'm in the US also. First time posting. How did your colonoscopy go. I also had mine today. It's been 4 weeks since my attack and I knew there was something still wrong. The diverticuli was still inflamed and the dr put me back on flagyl.I've had there atracks all 5 years apart. He said he actually thinks I had a perforation since it hasn't completely healed but the Ct scan I had in the ER did not show any perfs. I am really upset as I have healthy anxiety anyway. I hope yours went well.Shawn.

By the way I'm female 53 smile

Hi linda822. I totally agree with you. My GI doctor told me the same thing even though peanuts do get me every time. He says either you have it or you don't. They don't know why. I also eat a normal diet and take high fiber supplements. I had been without an attack for over a year. A couple weeks ago I ate peanuts for the first time in a long time and now I have an attack. Some say it's stress. I do have anxiety and have tried very hard to get past that. Don't know what the answer is for that sad. I am so happy to be apart of this forum. I have dealt with the Big D for over 12 years in silence wondering if every twitch and every bout is D or cancer. It is so nice to talk to others that are going thru the same thing. It helps calm my anxiety.
