How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...
If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

Here is good news. Diverticulitis attack on Jan 16, 2017 finally felt better and pain free 5 weeks later and bowels back to normal at 8-9 weeks. I was diagnosed through CT scan and have multiple diverticula. I had a colonoscopy on Friday, everything is fine and was told to follow my normal diet including all fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds (they no longer tell you to avoid all that). I've read the research articles and it's true. Only new instructions is to drink more water and take metamucil once a day. Most important is to not get constipated.

I'm glad you are doing well. My first two attacks years ago I was well before antibiotics were done. I was so upset when I had the colonoscopy and he saw the inflamed diver that I had a panic attack. It's been 4 weeks and 3 days and still twinges but I'm only 3 days into new rx of flagyl. I hope it resolves like your did. Prayers that yours never comes back.

P.s. I see that you had you had your colonoscopy 8 weeks later. I had my exactly 4 weeks from the day I went to the ER. Maybe that just isn't enough time for all the inflammation to go down. I'm hoping that's all it is

Hi. I was very happy to find this forum. I did not know so many people had "D". I am 44 and was diagnosed with it in 2014 after my colonoscopy. I recently just had a D attack Saturday. I'm taking antibiotics and pain meds. Having my colonoscopy on the 17th to determine if surgery is required. I have been researching online trying to find what to eat but no luck. 4 days since I started antibiotics and still not feeling well.

Hi I was diagnosed at 43 after my first flare. Had second flare 5 years later and hear I am again with one another five years later. I took a course of augmentin and flagyl and still was having twinges. At 4 weeks post attack I had my second colonoscopy and i still have an inflamed diverticuli. I am on another course of flagyl and am still having twinges and off an on hip pain. I will have a second Ct scan if not better by Monday. I drank clear liquids for a couple of day then bland low fiber foods which I'm still having. I'm used to eating high fiber and very healthy so this is a gross diet for me . I hope you get better soon. Ps my first two atracks were waist high left side and went away in about 6 days or so. This attack is in lower left and won't seem to go away.

Linda822 thanks for the info. I'm so uncertain what to eat that it scares me to eat.

My first attack was January 16, had a CTscan on the 17th to confirm Diverticulitis. Per doctors orders liquid diet for 3 days then a low fiber diet for 2 weeks then back to normal. Took antibiotics for 10 days. It took around 5 weeks for me to feel like myself for the most part. I had to take probiotics for a couple of weeks to help get bowels back to normal and now I have to take metamucil daily.Twice I didn't go for 2 days and so took a stool softener which helped.I am now feeling great and eating a normal diet, no restrictions. You have to have patience, it takes a while to heal but until it does you have to be careful otherwise you get setbacks. Everyones rushes to get back to the high fiber but for diverticilitis it is the worst you can do until healed.
