How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

Posted , 153 users are following.

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...

If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

After managing things well for over a year i had a recall colonoscopy after 3 years because they found a polyp last tme. This disturbed things and introduced an infection unfortunately. I took a course of antibiotics which must have killed the bugs, but the pain is taking a while to settle. I reason that it needs time to completely heal, and the discomfort is subsiding so i am optimistic. It's been 5 weeks since the colonoscopy, and i am strictly avoiding nuts, seeds, skins and pips. I'm taking fybogel 1 or 2 times a day and trying to stick to root and leafy veg. Good luck all. X

Do try to ALWAYS avoid seeds; nuts; pips and skins.....and don't forget those hidden ones in dried fruit and hiding by the thousand inside every banana and cucumber!!!  And if not already taking it; try a high dose of Acidophilis 20 billion from Holland and Barrett.....it has been my turn around miracle pill after ten months of misery and agony......still never touch the forbidden foods and pray my run of good health can continue!

Thanks Christine, i will heed your advice. I had not thought about the 'hidden' seeds. I have just picked the fruit out of a hot cross bun for lunch, to the amusement of my husband.

You certainly have been.through it lately...let's hope it settles soon. You're right. .it cam take 3 months to calm down I am told by a friend who nurses post-colonoscopy patients. Non-sufferers have little or no idea how life-changing the Big D really is. Getting to my retirement work (some of us syill have to!) in a haze of pain, hunger, grumbling bloated tum &uncontrollable botty-gas..what fun! Sorry for sharing that if you are a sensitive soul. .but wind is a huge issue & ceases to amuse Big D sufferers..it can be unbelievably painful. I've even resorted to charcoal biscuits...o foulness! X

I never eat fruit cake, hot cross buns; bread and butter pudding...yes it is restrictive BUT anything is worth NO PAIN.

hello Caz......I know what it is like to have a ghastly time with this nasty B condition for sure.  I suppose when I first began; the bout itself lasted about ten days; but the afterpain went on for much longer - maybe another two to three weeks.  I would get two to three bouts a year; then in November 2014 one bout led more or less straight into another for a full ten months!  I was simply never well....then I found Acidophilis at Holland and Barrett (UK) the 20 billion dose. One per day.  I have been well ever since.  They are my miracle pills.  I hope that you could maybe have a similar success.  I am presently shedding some pounds on a meal replacement diet along with little gem lettuce....there are a lot about - mine is called Boossh and you can get the sachets and bars on the internet.  Before I did Lighter Life and did very well on that but it is a lot more expensive; as is the Cambridge diet nowadays.  I do still eat green veg like lettuce or cooked broccolli as do not want my bowels to forget how to work; and I take fybogel.

Thx Christine & thx everyone for support & info. Nasty pains yes..day 2. Of course the irony is that painkillers upset the tum! So far I've avoided meal replacements but if u r poorly it does save the effort of shopping/ cooking. I always thought they were only for the elderly until I had The Big D. O my. Am going to try acidophilus & probiotics. On a personal note..I really want to travel but find this thg soooo restrictive..it has ruined 2 holidays & restricts travel to areas where medical help is on hand. I'm sure other ppl are equally frustrated by this!!

      Hello Christine

I'm in the middle of a attack now been since Friday so you have to wait until the antibiotics have finished before you start the probiotics ? As I don't think my antibiotics are working it's never been this bad that I need a hot water bottle and feel ill

Hi, I'm new here. I'm recovering now from the big D! So far it's been five days. This the third time I've had it in less than a year. The first two times, it was less than a week recovery time. This time it's different. It started with very urgent diarrhea. Then the lower left abdominal pain. Right away I called my MD and started on Cipro and Flagyl. Also started the clear liquid diet. Three days later started running a fever. Went ER where a CT confirmed diverticulitis and was given a note from work for the next week. Diarrhea has continued. This is a nasty condition! My trigger seems to be stress related. Take care and feel better soon!

Hi jennifer and thanks. Although I have hads the Big D x 15 yrs., youjr pattern seems similar to mine & many peoples'. I usually get a fever with the first onset of diarrhea...along with nausea, shaking, trembling and feeling faint. Yuk. If you are still suffering diarrhea after 3 days you possibly need anti-spasm pills (i.e buscopan) & just water x 24hrs,,,anything else whatsoever will feed the infection and make it far worse.  Yes you too...take care & rest up & research!

Thanks Caz, the doctor did proscribe something for spasms. I thought it was for the pain and stopped taking them after my stomach stopped hurting. Maybe it was helping with the diarrhea, I'll start taking them again and see if that helps. And, I've had all the same symptoms, yuk is right! Thanks for the advise.

Hi new to the forum. I ended up in hospital on the 31st March had a CT scan and was diagnosed with Diverticulitis in three parts of my stomach, 5 weeks later I still have the same pains, I received no dietry advice from the Specialist or my GP I was just given a few sachettes of Movicol and a box of paracetomol and told it was wear and tear through age (52). Due back to see the Specialist on the 24th May. Its only through stumbling on this forum that I hav been made aware that I have to watch what I eat, no wonder my condition has not improved.
