How long do other people's diverticulitis attacks last? Just read someone on soft diet x 2months?!

I'd love to know how long other people's flare-ups last on average. Have had D disease x 15 y. Had 3 attacks in past 6 wks. Urgh! I usually take antis & get up after 1 or 2 days, liquids only x 36hrs then soft foods x about a week, then gradually reintro fibre, seeds, pulses. Maybe I should stay on soft food more than a few days after 36h on liquids?? Opinions please! And btw its almost impossible to lose weight when this rotten condition dictates eating all the wrong stuff after an attack.. White flour pasta, mash..all those carbs! And stodge! Not helpful. Any ideas? Thanks. New to forum. Am 63 now & desperate to do anything to avoid surgery. Hi to all fellow-sufferers..this thing is a so 'n so & invades at the drop of a hat. Oh..and...

If anyone has ideas about how to address core strength safely please...do tell. Caz

Hi, I'm 33 and was diagnosed Feb18, 2016 with my first bout of the Big D via Ct scan at the ER. (MULTIPLE DIVERTICULA IN SIGMOID FOUND DURING COLONOSCOPY A YEAR AGO) What brought me there was an intense feeling of dizziness and fatigue w/ bloating, slightly tender tummy but nothing too uncomfortable. (No fever) was initially put on flagyl and cipro but could not hold it down so switched to Augmentin also probiotic Culturelle. Took about 2 1/2 weeks to feel like my old self again with liquid, bland diet. Today I feel like I may be relapsing. After days of stomach bloat, Im experiencing much stomach pain, started on left radiating across lower stomach expecially when up and walking. BM'S soft but feeling incomplete. Nervous to see doc because affraid of the "SURGERY " convo. Being so young with this disease it weighs on me and the thoughts of the effects in the future. So glad to have fell upon this group and as i read the comments I am gaining much knowledge reading the advise of others going through this illness, and feel comfort in knowing I'm not the only one, even though the youngest sad For now liquids and rest while hoping for the best, I have a LONG road with this ahead of me

Hello Caz......I started this in my when I was in forties; and have lived with it since - likely 2003.....but not a full blown bout til 2006.  I began getting three of four bouts a year; normally spaced apart.  Then had a bad run with ten bouts in ten months....before starting Holland and Barrett's wonderful 20 billion Acidophilis tablets; and went 9 months til next bout.  It varies for everyone; you can get one bout after another and never really know or understand why!!  I do not eat seeds; nuts; pips; wholegrains or skins (so no dried fruit either; and no bananas which contain hundreds of seeds) and have been a lot better for the acidophilis and no banana routine.  Even after a one off bout; it can take maybe three weeks before the gut settles. Sorry if I have replied before! Good luck with managing this Pig of an illness. We all need that for sure!

Hi there, I truly hope after all this time you are feeling better. I am 39 years old, male, living close to Turin, Italy. I've had my first flare up on August 17th, I got a perforated diverticula, with an abscess of about 2 square cm. I was hospitalized the day after, and spent 8 days at the hospital before getting kicked out because "they needed the bad" (Italy sucks when it comes to health care). During my hospitalization I had antibiotics and I was not allowed to eat anything (I lost about 3 kilos). Since the day I came back home, today is the first day I could stand and walk a bit around. I am still on a liquid diet and still taking antibiotics and painkillers. I am getting quite desperate, I am very weak, but if I drink more than half a cup of broth, I feel full and I get pain in my bowel. Is it normal that this condition is lasting so long?

frown? I do not think you should have been sent home , you sound like you need surgery ASAP to remove the absese and close or remove the section of colon that has the perforated diverticuli, can you get to another country close and get into and emergency room? If not start showingup at the emergency room in italy , I think soon they will have to take your problem seriously , Good Luck my Friend

I make my own probiotic yogurt every day, and since I eat it (3 months), I haven't had any attack. The reason I make it (and not buy it) is that if you buy it you just pay for the commercials they make

I can only tell you that as soon as I notice the pain[i do not present like others, I feel like I have a weighted chain under belly from ovary to ovary] in fact first time I had one I went to my GYN rolleyes? any way that was over 15 yrs ago , I have just had my fouth colonoscopy , I have so many divoticuli I will probably have surgery in the next year to remove the worst parts, but getting back to your question [ i just wanted to tell you a little about how long I have been suffering ] I used to listen to the doc as soon as I started feeling the tenderness and pain and my bowel movments become difficult and skinny, i will eat a light diet, [eggs, pasta, yogart ,  but l ways include oatmeal, and start my fiber the next day I dont take all 6 metamucil that I normally do but I take 2-3 , and increase day by day , I stay away from faty foods, bacon ect, meat  i eat beans, refied for protien, I try to keep away from any of my trigger foods I think they are different for all of us oh, and I think Alcohol is bad for us deheydrates, from what my 5 doc I have seen most agree it is about keeping every thing moveing, it cant get infected if its getting kick out so to speak , well good luck ,I hope I can control my flares so I can prolong having surgery rolleyes

I have had 4 to 5 attacks in the past.

I don't get them anymore. They would last about 1 week.

I read a lot about diverticulitis and came up with a few solutions that have help me.

    1. No more ibuprofen ( most important)

    2. Only eat small meals

    3. No very hard crusted pizza or bagels.

    4. Take a daily probiotic with smartfiber capules.

    5. Drink more water daily.

This has help me a lot. zero attack the past 6 months.

Hi Julie, you must go back to your Doctor and tell them how you feel,if the lepicol didnt help there will be something else that will,i now find that Fybogel is helping me.There has to be a reason for the diarrhea.

Hi Julie.you must go back to your doctors and tell them how you feel and get some help.Have you tried Immodium  for some relief?

Julie it is possible it is something you're eating.

I get an upset stomach when I eat something that does not agree with me.

Sometimes we try to cheat with our food or we try to eat something only to find out afterwards that we can't eat it.

Try sticking to chicken and fish(not fried).Drummettes(grilled) and potatoes.

Brown rice isn't bad if add a boullion cube.
