How long does key hole surgery take?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I'm having key hole surgery tomorrow to remove an ovarian cyst (ovary is also being removed). The surgeon says it will take about 2 hours. I'm wondering, however, how long I will be at the hospital from when I arrive to when I leave. It is supposed to be out-patient. Does anyone have any personal experience with this? Any words of advice? I'm kind of frightened to be honest!

Hi i had my laproscopy on Friday afternoon to remove at 16cm simple cyst, ovary and tube, i was lucky they were able to drain a litre of fluid from the cyst first. I Checked in at 11.30am but didnt go down to theatre till 5.30pm and was in there for 2 hours. When i was coming round apparently i coughed quite a bit and my stats had dropped to 93 so i was lept in overnight on oxygen and had an xray at mignight to check my lungs.

I was allowed to go home the following afternoon. All i would say is remember to take mints to help with the trapped wind and a cushion to protect your tummy from the seatbelt on the way home.. I was nervouse before hand but so relieved its over with.

I hope everything goes well for you

Oh blimey I am stating to think I should never have read these, starting to feel nervous about mine now! Lol 16cm is huge though!! Mine is nowhere near that big but my pain  now is awful. Last lap i had a few years ago, I woke up coughing up blood for an hour! Never got ay explanation, doc just went home and I was told to go home a few hours later. I was scared cos the nurse said I had stopped breathing during the op so they had whipped the tube out of my throat that was why I was coighing up blood. Going to a different hospital this time though - that one is really dreadful!!

      Hi Sandy

I was nervous, never had an op before. Im surprised how well i feel now compared to before, i was in a lot of pain for the last 10 months, actually 2 other cysts that were found burst before they were removed.

Im so looking forward to being myself again if that makes sense. Good luck for your op, i hope it goes well for you

Ten months?! Why were you left so long?! God theres no way I could have put up with this pain for that long, thats awful, you poor thing!

I was sent away fromhospital once cos the pain settled after a few days and went in again last week to a and e but there was no way ai was letting them send me home again before I was seen properly, by a proper, none junior gynae! Bit fed up of being ignored when it comes to pain now so have really stuck up for myself this time.  The woman who did my scan was not gynae but general and she said " sorry I cant see anything that is causing your pain" so I thought great they're just gonna send me home again. But when this lovely gynae consultant came to see me he said the cysts, fibroids, adhesions and endimetriosis could all cause a great deal of pain! Just goes to show that some medica people have no idea what they're talking about. She made me feel like a baby crying for no reason, but at least he knew how I was feeling! God you would  think another woman may be a bit more sympathetic! I am so relieved I finally feel I am under the right care! X

Hello all! It has been nearly 24 hours since my surgery. I got to the hospital at 5:30, waited only 15 minutes or so, then was taken to pre-op. I put on a lovely (lol) gown and then they took down all sorts of information, asked me my name and birthdate many times, inserted an iv in my hand (ow). After a bit the anesthesiologiest came in and asked about my health, basically if I had any heart problems, breathing problems or previous problems with anesthesia.

Next the surgeon came in and talked to me, marked my stomach with an ink pen (tickled), then she went to wash up. The nurse put some anti-anxiety medicine in my iv, which helped my nerves!

Next I was wheeled into the operating room exactly at 7:27 (I checked the clock on the wall). THere were at least 5 people in there along with the surgeon. They scooted me onto the very narrow table, straped me down so I wouldn't fall off,put an oxygen mask on me and said to take about 3 deep breaths. Next thing I knew I was in the recovery room! The surgeon came in and said she took the right ovary and both tubes, just as we discussed.

Of course I was very sleepy and hurting. For some reason I had a bad headache! The nurse gave me pain medicine in my iv and some ice chips to suck on. My mouth was SO dry.

Husband came and got me around 11 am. When they say same day surgery, they really mean it!

AT HOME: I was not having much pain at all until about 3 pm. Took pain med and put an ice pack on my stomach. I thought I was doing very well until about 3 am....woke up in horrible pain and have been awake since! It is 8:30 in the morning where I am. Soooo.....looks like I will stay on top of the pain medicine and take naps all day. Thanking God for no gas pain that many have reported. My husband also has time off from work to care for me. :-)

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to post the things I remember while they are still fresh in my mind. Take care everyone and thank you for your support. I'll check back in later this afternoon.

Thats my fear Amy it happened last time I had a general! It scares me! Thats why I have avoided anything since but have to have it done now. Dermoid cysts must be quite emotonal, aren't they like you've been carrying your undeveloped twin all your life?
